Historia
For 31 years, a monster terrorized the residents of Wichita, Kansas. A bloodthirsty serial killer, self-named "BTK" - for "bind them, torture them, kill them" - he slaughtered men, women, and children alike, eluding the police for decades while bragging of his grisly exploits to the media. The nation was shocked when the fiend who was finally apprehended turned out to be Dennis Rader - a friendly neighbor...a devoted husband...a helpful Boy Scout dad...the respected president of his church. Written by four award-winning crime reporters who covered the story for more than 20 years, Bind, Torture, Kill is the most intimate and complete account of the BTK nightmare

Investigation intensive; shows the heroes behind the hunt.

I appreciate any narrative that can lay facts down and focus on the families and the detectives instead of fixating too much on the killer, their psychology, and the intensely grotesque nature of their crimes.
This story does exactly that. I was a little skeptical at first knowing how antagonistic reporters can be with, well, just about everybody and not just law enforcement, and this being written by not only one but 4 of them. They proved me wrong. This never once felt sensationalized and they didn’t display anything for pure shock value. The authors were respectful, thorough, and gave credit where it was due. Maybe true journalism isn’t extinct.
Also, LOL at the press conference at the end with all the politicians congratulating themselves on catching BTK when they did f*ck all. Ain’t that just how it goes? Bunch of good for nothings, I appreciated them calling that out. The poor audience at the time, lmao.
Narrator did a good job. I know some people said he was monotonous but I didn’t get that sense. Kudos to him for being engaging and easy to understand, as well as showing emotion through some of the line deliveries. I hope he took breaks while recording this; some of the material is tough to get through. Great work!

He was a model citizen. A hospital volunteer. And one of the most sadistic serial killers of all time. But few people could see the cruel monster beneath the colorful clown makeup that John Gacy wore to entertain children in his Chicago suburb. Few could imagine what lay buried beneath his house of horrors—until a teenage boy disappeared before Christmas in 1978, leading prosecutor Terry Sullivan on the greatest manhunt of his career.

I’ve been on the hunt for books written by investigators and individuals involved in the hunting down and prosecution of serial killers. This book doesn’t disappoint.
If you’re looking for nothing but shock and awe, grisly details and a deep dive into Gacy’s psychology, you might skip this one. I myself appreciated the focus upon the investigation, the families affected, the lives of the victims, and the court proceedings.
This book is far better than any documentary! It was wonderful to put “names” (even though some have been changed) to the individuals who stopped at nothing to put Gacy behind bars.
Be warned, for the living victims sharing their stories and for some of the confessions, it gets very upsetting and intense as the assaults are discussed in vivid detail- though not gratuitously.
Thank you, Terry Sullivan, for putting forth such a vast, emotional labor in the creation of this book so that we might better understand the limitations and challenges of law enforcement, the Justice system, and human flaws and shortcomings that made it possible for Gacy to operate for as long as he did.

Excellent detail that does the victims justice.
Revisado: 09-26-23
A lot of serial killer material out there focuses on the killer himself and treats him like some kind of demented celebrity.
This book does the opposite, bringing to life the true story of the understaffed, overworked, and oftentimes haggard Green River task force as they struggle to identify the perpetrator, as well as their constant battle with an apathetic environment more concerned with politics and public image than any real justice for the many victims.
It also provides a small but illuminating view of the victims themselves and their situations. While the authors employ terminology that now in 2023 some might consider politically incorrect, they do succeed in humanizing each missing and/or murdered woman.
Most serial documentaries rely on sensationalism, shock and awe. This book made each girl, her circumstances, and the family she left behind feel very real.
Somber, intriguing and in-depth, this is a great book for those who want to step into the detectives’ shoes, rather than the killer himself. Well done.

First time reading/listening to this author and it won’t be the last. Loved the story. The age gap/enemies to lovers was really fun and I was Team Janie most if not all the time. I’m glad Fox finally took a chance and let her in.
The narrators were fantastic. They work together well and I loved the duet format.
I’m looking forward to diving into the next book!

Amazing Narrator, Fantastic and Thrilling History
Revisado: 01-31-23
I can’t say anything bad about this book. The way the author kept my attention was phenomenal. A lot of non-fiction books that I listen to slog on—not this one! I was hooked start to finish.
The narrator is so dang good. True story: I was listening to this audiobook at the dentist’s office (I have a phobia of needles/injections) and my dentist allowed me to play this audiobook to distract me from what he was doing and there were times the narrator cracked us up with some of the deliveries of the book’s many witty one-liner commentaries. And after just an hour of listening to this book (and I was in the middle of it!), my dentist went “well sh*t, that was so interesting I’m gonna go home, buy it and download it tonight.” Best time I’ve ever had at the dentist. EVER.
I sometimes forgot I was listening to a non-fiction history book about Irish gangsters. It was a blast. I also really appreciated how it touched on Irish history and how connected it was to the Irish American experience. If you want to learn about the Irish mob and the colorful characters that made it what it was, run, don’t walk!

Historia
When the Continental Congress decided to declare independence from the British Empire in 1776, 10 percent of the population of their fledgling country were from Ireland. By 1790, close to 500,000 Irish citizens had immigrated to America. They were very active in the American Revolution, both on the battlefields and off, yet their stories are not well known. The important contributions of the Irish on military, political, and economic levels have been long overlooked and ignored by generations of historians.

Needs editing, among other things.
Revisado: 10-03-22
I really tried with this book. Having never read the author before, I thought I’d give it a shot. But there two serious issues I had with the content:
1. While a promising subject, this book lacks a solid outline and flow from one chapter to another. The author repeats the same premise constantly and each chapter reiterates everything again and again, with some different nuggets of facts sprinkled in. I think a decent editor could’ve streamlined this but it reads like a rough draft rather than a polished piece.
2. Treating Irish indentured servitude as comparable to that of enslaved peoples. The book lacks sensitivity as well, using terms like “troublesome” when describing indigenous peoples. Also uses less than desirable terms for non-white peoples during prose. While I could accept this terminology in quotes from historical figures at that time, hearing the author use it regularly is off putting.
The saving grace is the narrator, who does his best in his performance to remain captivating throughout.
Overall I’d skip this one, and if you simply must have it, buy a digital copy so you can skim over repetitive prose so you can find the information you need for your research.

Um, EXCUSE ME? Hot Book Boyfriend Alert.
Revisado: 06-16-22
I'm HUGE on world-building and this book does a fantastic job of sucking you in and submerging you! It was easy to follow along with and I didn't feel either completely lost or treated like I was dumb - the author gives you just the right amount.
Hannah is a young and relatable heroine - she's thrust into a situation of greatness (to quote Shakespeare ;)) and is the perfect balance of "I want to go home" with an underlying curiosity that she understandably can't get rid of. I typically avoid the "falling into another universe" trope because I can't stand super whiny magic-portal heroines, but Hannah is a breath of fresh air! The author dodged those pitfalls with flying colors.
Got myself a new book boyfriend from this story that I didn't even realize I was getting. Um, HELLO! Dreamboat alert.
Looking forward to the next installment!

An easy listen, likable characters and a story that kept my interest throughout. The narrator does an excellent job of accents, voices (even male voices) and I felt fully immersed in this captivating Indian mythology. The author does a good job of balancing the romance with the overall story.
