Another fantastic listen
Revisado: 06-03-24
I have read every book in this series, and Fortune, Ida Belle, and Gertie never fail to disappoint. It is so easy for these types of stories to be predictable and formulaic, yet I find Jana DeLeon’s writing anything but. This story especially had enough twists and turns to keep it interesting until the very last second, and enough humor to keep me laughing out loud as usual. Well worth the read/listen!

Good Fun
Revisado: 11-14-18
I bought this book because my daughter and I both thoroughly enjoyed his Hero's Guide series and I wanted to preview this one for its potential inclusion in her library as well. I was not disappointed. The story is good, clean fun, and while it may seem a bit far fetched has enough historical fact to it for it to be a fun starting off point for further study (see the afterward for verication of this). I would recommend it for much the same reason I would Healy's other series. It put a smile on my face, and I can in good conscience give it to my daughter to read as well. The narrator is good, though not as good as the one who read the Hero's Guide books (he added to the stories' hilarity). Overall, really well done.

Historia
January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she’s never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb.... As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends - and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is.

Phenominal!
Revisado: 09-13-18
This book is so worth the read (listen). I loved every second, and found myself loving the characters more and more as they progressed through the story. It is storytelling at its best-that which draws you in and keeps you enthralled with each and every word. This is not a book of fast moving action, but rather the sweet telling of what life was like in a small village during the occupation of World War 2. It chronicles heartache, joy, memories and love. And I adored it. The multi-person narration adds to it and is so well done. I found it helpful with such a wide cast of characters to recognize the voices before recognizing the words they spoke. Truly well done.

Historia
Larry Virgil skipped out on his latest court date after he was arrested for hijacking an eighteen-wheeler full of premium bourbon. Fortunately for bounty hunter Stephanie Plum, Larry is just stupid enough to attempt almost the exact same crime again. Only this time he flees the scene, leaving behind a freezer truck loaded with Bogart ice cream and a dead body—frozen solid and covered in chocolate and chopped pecans.

Still fun, but...
Revisado: 01-01-18
time for the series to end. I love Stephanie Plum stories, and some have made me laugh so hard I cried. I laughed through this book too, albeit less than through the others, but the plots are so predictable at this point that they all are starting to run together. Don't let this series cease to be a favorite for so many because the author doesn't know how to quit while she is ahead! Bring it to a satisfying conclusion and let it end naturally.

Since he was a boy growing up in Mississippi, Father Tim has lived what he calls "the life of the mind". Except for cooking and gardening and washing his dog, he never learned to savor the work of his hands. And then he finds a derelict nativity scene: twenty figures, including a flock of sheep, that have suffered the indignities of time and neglect.

A favorite forever
Revisado: 10-31-17
I'm a huge fan of this series, and this Christmas installment is no different. I read it every year around the holidays for a timeless tale of selflessness and the joy of Jesus' birth. Well worth reading/listening to, though the narrator does not do it justice. He is fine, but the reading could have been better.

Historia
Tuesdays at Castle Glower are Princess Celie's favorite days. That's because on Tuesdays the castle adds a new room, a turret, or sometimes even an entire wing. No one ever knows what the castle will do next, and no one - other than Celie, that is - takes the time to map out the new additions. But when King and Queen Glower are ambushed and their fate is unknown, it's up to Celie, with her secret knowledge of the castle's never-ending twists and turns, to protect their home and save their kingdom.

Excellent
Revisado: 08-23-17
As a mom, I appreciated that this story wasn't one of those "my parents are idiots and cause all my problems" kind of tales. That seems to be relatively uncommon these days, so a positive parental involvement is a plus when I'm looking for books for my daughter. The plot line was fun and kept moving, and I found reasons to love each of the main characters in turn. The castle functions as a bit of a god character, which is an interesting twist and a fun talking point. Overall well written, though the performance wasn't one of my favorites. Worth the buy, though, especially if you are looking for clean writing for your kids or yourself.

Just Okay...
Revisado: 08-17-17
I was excited about this book because I am actually a fan of the trend of retelling fairy tales. This one seemed like it would be exciting, and to a certain extent it was. But the story dragged in spots, and I found myself leaving it for weeks before I came back to finish it, determined not to waste the money. As a mom I also was listening with the hope of being able to share it with my daughter. I'm not a fan enough to do so, mainly for the reason that I don't like some of the subtle themes, such as "everyone is determined as good or bad by how they are raised," and "villains are only people villanized by their circumstances." I could talk these through with her, but there are just better stories out there that would accomplish the same purpose. The narrator was okay, not great. Overall, I probably won't listen to it again. I'd rather go with one of the others in this trend, like the Hero's Guide series.

Prince Liam. Prince Frederic. Prince Duncan. Prince Gustav. You've never heard of them, have you? These are the princes who saved Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Snow White, and Rapunzel, respectively, and yet, thanks to those lousy bards who wrote the tales, you likely know them only as Prince Charming. But all of this is about to change.

Love!
Revisado: 08-11-17
I adore this book as much for the reader as for the story itself. He is absolutely amazing. Think Jim Dale quality, if you are a fan of the Harry Potter audios. The story is a fun take on the retelling of fairytales that is so common right now. Laugh out loud funny in places, again because of the reader every bit as much as the actual writing. I just about spewed my drink all over the first time I heard him reading the troll voice. Overall this book is worth reading in any form, but the audio book just makes it that much better. Prepare to have some light hearted fun with a story that engages adults as well as those in its intended audience.
