Historia
The world as we know it ends when an attack on the U.S. unleashes bombs that deliver fire and biological destruction. Along with sonic detonations and devastating earthquakes, the bombs have also brought the green mist. If breathed in, it is deadly to all men—but alters the body chemistry of many women, imbuing them with superhuman abilities. A group of high-school teachers heading home from a conference experiences firsthand the strength of these new powers.

A Bit Overtly Feminist and Pagan
Revisado: 08-12-24
the story was decent--interesting and written fairly well. characters were interesting too. But throughout the entire story, I felt like I was listening to a pagan feminist propaganda manifesto. It got often carried away describing beliefs and rituals. I don't mind reading and learning about them, but it felt like the entire reason for the book. so take that for what it's worth. if you are interested in learning about paganism, I thought it did a good job of enlightening the reader to understand it better and clarify many misconceptions. Not going to bother with the next one. Feels a bit too predictable.

Miracle Springs is a place of healing. Strangers flock there hoping that the natural hot springs, five-star cuisine, and renowned spa can cure their ills. And, if none of that works, they often find their way to Miracle Books, where, over a fresh-baked scone from the Gingerbread House bakery, they exchange their stories with owner Nora Pennington in return for a carefully chosen book. That's Nora's special talent: prescribing the perfect novel to ease a person's deepest pain and lighten their heaviest burden.

Would Make a Good Hallmark Movie
Revisado: 06-20-24
Not a bad book. Interesting with some decent mystery and characters. It does, however, have the feel of a Hallmark movie. Cheesy names, cheesy description, etc. So if you don't mind that sort of thing, the story itself is good.

Historia
The great scholar, W. E. B. Du Bois, once wrote about the problem of race in America, and what he called “Double Consciousness,” a sensitivity that every African American possesses in order to survive. Since childhood, Ailey Pearl Garfield has understood Du Bois’s words all too well. Bearing the names of two formidable Black Americans—the revered choreographer Alvin Ailey and her great grandmother Pearl, the descendant of enslaved Georgians and tenant farmers—Ailey carries Du Bois’s problem on her shoulders.

Needs a trigger warning!
Revisado: 05-13-24
Excellent story in and of itself. Insightful deep dive into Black history, one that should not be ignored. Excellent philosophical discussions as well about many theoretical approaches to the study of this history. However, there is quite a bit of graphic sexual description, and quite a lot of depiction of brutal rape and violence. It's an important part of the story (sometimes-- could cut what isn't historical a bit), but some may want to avoid the book for that reason.

Like trying to explain a dream.
Revisado: 01-27-23
If you like stories of fantastical and whimsical imaginations, this book is for you. The narration is a bit slow (much better at about 1.20 speed) but is very well done, and the variety of voices helps keep things straight. The story is a story about stories, which is fun, but very much like someone trying to explain a dream they had. That is the kind of odd this book is. Very Morgenstern. Liked it but didn't love it.

Historia
On the muddy banks of the Calumet River, a body has been found posed next to a series of mysterious glyphs and bearing wounds from a ritualistic slaying. Chicago detective Addie Bisset knows only one man who can decipher the message left by the killer: her friend Dr. Evan Wilding. A brilliant forensic semiotician, Evan decodes the etchings as Viking Age runes. They suggest either human sacrifice or righteous punishment. But to what god? And for what sins? Only one thing is clear from the disturbing runic riddles: there are more victims to come.

Good but not Great
Revisado: 06-14-22
A detective story that would make a great episode of a cop show. Great narration (with a bit of an accent problem here and there) and decent characters, but nothing particularly insightful. I did learn a lot about Viking culture though. The author certainly did her homework. Overall a good story.

Jane Austin meets Magic
Revisado: 06-11-22
I enjoyed the story and it kept me interested most of the time. However, much of the plot was driven by pomp and social proprieties, which felt at odds with a world of magic. If you like Austin, this book would be your cup of tea for sure!

Historia
Jubilee tells the true story of Vyry, the child of a white plantation owner and his black mistress. Vyry bears witness to the South's antebellum opulence and to its brutality, its wartime ruin, and the promises of Reconstruction. Weaving her own family's oral history with 30 years of research, Margaret Walker's novel brings the everyday experiences of slaves to light. Jubilee churns with the hunger, the hymns, the struggles, and the very breath of American history.

An Important Book That Everyone Needs to Read
Revisado: 05-08-22
The fair yet harsh reality of this book, the beauty and depths of the characters. and the insight it provides are crucial for every American of every race, color, and creed to understand. The narrator expertly brings the characters to life as well. The story may be fictional, but the truths are anything but. Not only a must-read, but an entertaining and beautifully written book as well. I reserve five star ratings for just such books.

Every Young Person Should Read This
Revisado: 04-09-22
Genesis' struggles are so genuine and insightful. I wish this book had been around when I was a teenager. But even as an old lady I loved sharing this journey with her. I rarely give 5 stars, so you know this is a rare gem. And the author's voice gave it authenticity.

Revisado: 02-19-22
Light, serious, fun, and insightful. That's how I would describe this book. Ken reading this is a PERFECT fit. His voice is so familiar that it feels like it's being read by a friend. And I learned some things too, which apparently would make Alex happy.

Story Kept Me Listening
Revisado: 02-16-22
The story was unique and well written although the pace of the beginning was strange--very fast covering years then a big slow down. But some beautiful prose that I truly enjoyed. The narrator (the author) however should stick to writing. Imagine the tone you would choose to tell a family their loved one has died--rather soft and apologetic. Well he read the entire book with that tone, whether he was describing a baby's face or a gruesome beating. It was pretty distracting to say the least.
