Historia
Few know the warship’s actual name. But everyone has heard the rumors. The PUV James Keeling can do something no other vessel in existence can do—slip into another dimension, travel undetected, then re-emerge onto our plane and surprise enemy targets. But the thing that makes the Crypt unique also makes it a nightmare for those onboard; interdimensional travel causes hallucinations, violent behavior, and psychotic breakdowns. Keeling could be the Union’s greatest weapon, a game-changing asset that can defeat the bloodthirsty zealots of the Purist Nation, the Union’s mortal enemy.

First Scott Sigler - because of Ray Porter
Revisado: 08-19-24
This was my first book by Scott Sigler. I purchased it because Ray Porter is the narrator. He is one of the finest narrators I've found, and will try out nearly any book - even a new "series" because of him, alone. If the book happens to be worthwhile, so much the better. While I didn't find the story super-strong, it was entertaining enough that I was disappointed when I realized it is the first in a series of ONE and I'll have to wait for the next installment which should be coming out in early 2025.
The biggest problem I had with following the story was the names. There was a large cast of characters, some of whom were operating under aliases. Sigler referred to each of them by their various names seemingly at random. Sometimes it was their first "real" name and sometimes the last. Other times it was their first "pseudonym", and still other times, the last. It made it more difficult than necessary to keep the threads straight. For the characters that only had first and last names, he did something similar, sometimes using a first name, then last, then first again - seemingly at random. By the end of the book I think I finally got most of the first and last names and pseudonyms paired up in my mind, but it took some mental calisthenics to do it.
There was plenty of violence (it is a war book after all) and there were some gory scenes, but most did serve to advance the story. There were some "letting the details unfold" plot allusions that never quite seemed to tie together clearly, but overall a pretty good narrative. As far as the almost expected level of sexual scenes in the book, well - I don't consider myself a prude, but I appreciated that most of the sexual encounters were alluded to in order to define relationships rather than spelled out in graphic detail for the sake of titillation,
I look forward to book two, and will buy it - if Ray Porter is again hired to narrate.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Fantastic!
Revisado: 08-12-24
Love. Love. Love. Everything about this listen was perfect. I chose it based on how much I enjoyed "The Martian" and it didn't disappoint. I struggled to stop listening so I could go to work. The story was engaging, and sometimes nail-biting. The narrator couldn't have been better. I found myself amazed at his command of the many characters and their accents. It was very easy to follow who was saying what. I shouldn't have been surprised. He also narrated the Bobiverse series which I also loved. In short, if you like modern sci-fi, get this book.

Historia
On a summer day in 1914, a nineteen-year-old Serbian nationalist gunned down Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo. While the world slumbered, monumental forces were shaken. In less than a month, a combination of ambition, deceit, fear, jealousy, missed opportunities, and miscalculation sent Austro-Hungarian troops marching into Serbia, German troops streaming toward Paris, and a vast Russian army into war, with England as its ally. As crowds cheered their armies on, no one could guess what lay ahead in the First World War.

Just a dry as I remember History Class being
Revisado: 08-11-24
I chose to try this book on the strength of good reviews, especially one from someone who said it wasn't dry or boring - and called it a "history book for non-historians". They raved about the narrator and gave the story high marks. I tried. I honestly tried to get some good out of it. I slogged through 8 hours of one of the most soporific narrators I've ever heard reading what often seemed like a long list of names, dates, battle plans, and equipment counts. I found my mind wandering repeatedly causing me to rewind so often, I probably listened to that same 8 hours of content for at least 12 hours. The narrator's voice was not grating or completely devoid of intonation, so perhaps it was just the material he had to work with. I simply could not stick with it. I'm certain Audible won't allow me to return it - I've gotten banned from returning titles before because I'd listened "too long" before giving up. This is one time I regret being so tenacious. It never got better.

Historia
Israel David Goodkind is a minor bureaucrat in the Nixon White House, killing empty office time by writing the story of four generations of his large, sprawling Russian Jewish immigrant family. As he recounts his brief stint in show business, his torrid affair with a showgirl, and his encounters with a hassled and distracted President Nixon, Goodkind also witnesses historical events firsthand - the Watergate scandal, the Yom Kippur War - and eventually finds his way back to his Jewish faith.

I’ve only recently discovered Herman Wouk and have become a fan. This one did not disappoint. The narrator was very well picked in terms of his dialect fitting very perfectly with the character portray. Some books suffer from a bland narrator, this one did not.

Suffered from flat narration
Revisado: 06-30-24
After having listen to the winds of war, and war and remembrance, the narration on this one was disappointing. Except when the narrator was doing voices, many of which sounded the same, the exposition in between was flat and rather lifeless. With another narrator, I would’ve given this a solid five stars across-the-board.

Historia
Herman Wouk's sweeping epic of World War II, which begins with The Winds of War and continues here in War and Remembrance, stands as the crowning achievement of one of America's most celebrated storytellers. Like no other books about the war, Wouk's spellbinding narrative captures the tide of global events - and all the drama, romance, heroism, and tragedy of World War II - as it immerses us in the lives of a single American family drawn into the very center of the war's maelstrom.

I loved everything about the story. Arnold was completely transparent even sharing the not so great things he’s done. My only disappointment was I think I would’ve enjoyed it more had it been all in his voice. He narrated the first and the last chapters and after a time I got used to the other narrator, it’s just that all the time I was imagining it being said with Arnold accent, I’m certain I will listen again.

Gene Wilder is one of the great comic actors who defined the 1970s and 1980s in movies. From his work with Woody Allen, to the rich group of movies he made with Mel Brooks, to his partnership on screen with Richard Pryor, Wilder's performances are still discussed and celebrated today.

Almost returned it
Revisado: 12-29-23
I tried to return this title after five minutes, but discovered that Audible does not allow returns when you pay cash instead of credits. I’m rather glad I stuck with it, the story turned out to be quite engaging. It was the narration that put me off. Gene Wilder, soft reading seemed almost somnorific, and I wasn’t certain I could get through it, but it was quite good. The early chapters outlining his rather unhappy childhood did make me cringe occasionally, but I got past that and was able to see the value in sharing the history that molded him.
