unfamiliar unpronounce-able names, places, devices, entities confusing at first, but the story is engrossing albeit a story as old as humans; detailed, complicated, and it does continue...may be drawbacks for some, but engaging to me; the voices were spot-on and very well done

narration is outstanding; it is the Patric Dickinson translation, seeming most authentic in the reading; pacing, rhythm, pronunciation, vigor make the story all the more engaging; perhaps the best audible book I have listened to…

finest literature
Revisado: 07-07-24
many people do not like this book, perhaps put off by its number of pages; that becomes irrelevant once engaged with the story; the voice/narrator is excellent; there are a couple of glitches but not due to narrator; if this version really is only 30 hours then it is abridged; the Library of America printed hardbound version is 1386 pages; highly recommend

Historia
Why do "Great Books" continue to speak to us hundreds and even thousands of years after they were written? Can they deepen our self-knowledge and wisdom? Are our lives changed in any meaningful way by the experience of reading them?Tackle these questions and more in these 36 engaging lectures. Beginning with his definition of a Great Book as one that possesses a great theme of enduring importance, noble language that "elevates the soul and ennobles the mind," and a universality that enables it to "speak across the ages," Professor Fears examines a body of work that offers extraordinary wisdom to those willing to receive it.

great books
Revisado: 02-10-23
this man is apparently very well known and adored; the voice is very nasal, high pitched, and with a southern accent; the list of books is in table of contents which Mr Fears reads as his first chapter; he sounds like a white southern baptist pulpit-pounding born-again preacher; reading the actual books is the only way to find “truth” for oneself

Historia
The Iliad is one of the most enduring creations of Western Civilization and was originally written to be recited or chanted to the accompaniment of various instruments. Properly performed, this work today is just as meaningful, just as powerful, and just as entertaining as it was in the ninth century BC, and it casts its spell upon modern listeners with the same raw intensity as it did upon the people of ancient times.

Historia
Harry Hole is not in a good place. Rakel - the only woman he's ever loved - has ended it with him, permanently. He's been given a chance for a new start with the Oslo Police, but it's in the cold case office. What he really wants is to be investigating cases he suspects have ties to Svein Finne, the serial rapist and murderer who Harry helped put behind bars. And now, Finne is free after a decade-plus in prison. When Harry wakes up the morning after a drunken night with blood that's clearly not his own on his hands, it's only the very beginning of what will be a waking nightmare.
