Historia
The worst hard-rock mining disaster in American history began a half hour before midnight on June 8, 1917, when fire broke out in the North Butte Mining Company's Granite Mountain shaft. Sparked more than 2,000 feet below ground, the fire spewed flames, smoke, and poisonous gas through a labyrinth of underground tunnels. Within an hour more than 400 men would be locked in a battle to survive. Within three days 164 of them would be dead.

The Miners Are The Heroes
Revisado: 10-18-21
Greed and deception of the mine owners resulted in the loss of so many miners lives. Safety of the miners must be a priority in order to decrease these kinds of incidents. To this day there are still flaws in the system.

Historia
Sometimes from the ashes of tragedy comes an extraordinary, even magical story that inspires, offers hope, and helps heal even the deepest wounds. Heart of a Soldier is such a story, thrillingly told by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Blind Eye. It is the story of career soldier Rick Rescorla, who got 2,700 people out of the World Trade Center on September 11, and then went back to search for more.

Wonderful but sad - Excellently written
Revisado: 09-10-21
The way the author has given us so much detail about Rick’s life prior to 9-11 proved to be the story of an amazing person. I was overwhelmed with sadness as I finished the last chapter. It has been 20 years since this all this took place but I remember what happened very clearly. None of us have ever been the same.

On December 3, 1999, the call crackled in to the men of the Worchester, Massachusetts Fire Department: a three-alarm warehouse blaze in a six-story windowless colossus of brick and mortar. What happened next - and how their lives and community were changed forever - offers an unprecedented look at these heroic men whose job it is to rush into burning buildings when everyone else just wants out.

My story is the story of murder, mass murder, on a scale that was until then unknown. It was premeditated and committed in cold blood. The murderers were Germans and the murdered, the Jews of Holland. The Jews were, in a process of disenfranchisement and isolation, robbed of everything, transported and in a systematic-scientific, technically efficient manner, murdered.

Thorough and concise
Revisado: 06-24-20
This story is one child’s memory of his experiences going through the Holocaust during World War II. From the beginning it is interesting with good character development as the story line moves forward. Getting to know the child telling the story I felt sadness and pity for him. (**Alert** Mr. Veffer includes brief comments of sexual assaults.) I recommend Mr. Veffer’s memories to you if you are interested in hearing (reading) how even children have the ability to survive horrific events in their lives.

Historia
A chic Parisienne, Françoise never expected to find herself living on a South African game reserve. But then, she fell in love with conservationist Lawrence Anthony, and everything changed. After Lawrence’s death, Françoise faced the daunting responsibility of running Thula Thula without him. Poachers attacked their rhinos, their security team wouldn’t take orders from a woman, and the authorities were threatening to cull their beloved elephant family. On top of that, the herd’s feisty new matriarch, Frankie, didn’t like her.

Excellent, heartbreaking, and inspirational
Revisado: 03-25-20
I was very intrigued to read this book after I had read “The Elephant Whisperer” which was written by this author’s husband. After Lawrence Anthony, Francoise Anthony’s husband died, Francoise became the owner of Thula Thula. Francoise and Lawrence built Thula Thula from very humble beginnings. Over the years, Francoise was determined to keep Thula Thula open in spite of the many obstacles set before her. I love the way Francoise continued to press forward with the dream she and Lawrence had shared. A stunning story of animal survival even though being brutally hunted and treated by humans. A wonderful book to read!

Historia
In March 1941 Jimmy Stewart, America's boy next door and recent Academy Award winner, left fame and fortune behind and joined the United States Army Air Corps to fulfill his family mission and serve his country. He rose from private to colonel and participated in 20 often-brutal World War II combat missions over Germany and France. In mere months the war took away his boyish looks as he faced near-death experiences and the loss of men under his command. The war finally won, he returned home with millions of other veterans to face an uncertain future.

Disappointing
Revisado: 03-01-20
I enjoyed the story of Jimmy Stewart for the most part. His military service was outstanding and something I had never heard too much of.
I did not expect to hear about the great Jimmy Stewart’s sex life in detail and the many recognizable Hollywood female stars. That stuff could have been left out and the book would have been much more satisfying for me.
Would I recommend this book? NO. There are probably much better books than this one out there. I am returning this book to audible.

Historia
Four days before Christmas in 1943, a badly damaged American bomber struggled to fly over wartime Germany. At its controls was a 21-year-old pilot. Half his crew lay wounded or dead. It was their first mission. Suddenly a sleek, dark shape pulled up on the bomber’s tail - a German Messerschmitt fighter. Worse, the German pilot was an ace, a man able to destroy the American bomber with the squeeze of a trigger.

Exceptional historical story
Revisado: 02-20-20
I had heard of this book while listening to the “Jim Bohannon Show on the Westwood One Network”. Then when I saw this book on audible.com I knew I had to read (listen to) it.
The author included great detail about the men involved in the incident from their youth, their interest in flying, and how they became pilots for their respective military service - one man from the United States and one man from Germany during World War ll. Technically they were enemies but the circumstance they were involved in showed the humanity, compassion, and integrity of the German pilot who risked so much in order to assist the Americans whose airplane was severely damaged get to safety.
Both men wondered what happened to the other pilot for years! Eventually they were able to find each other and meet. They had a wonderful reunion that took place during peacetime. They were both curious as to why the other acted the way they did during that short encounter while doing battle in the sky.
I love the way their meeting took place all those years later after the war ended. It was exciting to listen to and I didn’t want the book to end. I recommend this to anyone!

This story is remarkable, fascinating, has lots of detail, and I was cheering for Kristen as I listened to the book. I did not appreciate all the foul mouth language - there’s just too much for a story like this. Authors should not read their own book...

Historia
In the summer of 1937, Amelia Earhart is the most famous woman in the world - a record-breaking pilot, a best-selling author, and a modern woman shattering the glass ceiling in the early days of aviation. And then she vanishes. In Tampa, Florida, 15-year-old Lizzie Friedlander spends her afternoons glued to her father’s radio, tapping into the enormity of a world she longs to travel. Lizzie can hardly believe her ears when she picks up a radio signal from a faraway source that sets her heart racing: “Amelia Earhart calling SOS! 17/p>

Historia
Before her death at 110, the pianist Alice Herz-Sommer was an eyewitness to the entire last century and the first decade of this one. She had seen it all, surviving the Theresienstadt concentration camp, attending the trial of Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem, and along the way coming into contact with some of the most fascinating historical figures of our time. As a child in Prague, she spent weekends and holidays in the company of Franz Kafka (whom she knew as “Uncle Franz 17), and Gustav Mahler, Sigmund Freud, and Rainer Maria Rilke were friendly with her mother.
