A 1000 pages of thrills!! @#!$#%&*%$#@ GREAT!
Revisado: 09-05-20
Stephenson has written thrillers before and he's written Pynchon-like novels with twisty sentences and tangents but this novel combines both and it's on fire for 1000 pages. Great plot, characters that work on every level, fun factoids sprinkled into dynamic gun battles, and some lovely writing about the outdoors. The narrator caught it all and kept track of dozens of globetrotting characters and juggling Chinese, Russian, British, Hungarian, and Boston accents while keeping the action flying. Top marks in every way

Here, in an Orwellian 1984, Zoyd Wheeler and his daughter, Prairie, search for Prairie's long-lost mother, a '60s radical who ran off with a narc.

If you're looking for audio Pynchon then it's a safe bet that you understand the challenges of reading aloud Pynchonean text; the multiple character, flashbacks and flashforwards in mid-sentence, the songs. This reader does it all with panache

It works well
Revisado: 05-19-20
This is a good, old school, rendition of the play; by old school I mean in the Gielguld style of declamation: clear and emphatic. Not sure what production issues the other person complained of, I found it worked well and suited my needs. A good choice if you don't want the Arkangel version.

Historia
This novel spans the period between the Chicago World's Fair of 1893 and the years just after World War I. With a worldwide disaster looming just a few years ahead, it is a time of unrestrained corporate greed, false religiosity, moronic fecklessness, and evil intent in high places. No reference to the present day is intended or should be inferred.

Great reader, grossly incompetent production
Revisado: 05-01-20
In this rich and complicated book with dozens of central characters trotting over the globe and even through cosmic dimensions, the reader does a fabulous job, expressive where needed, carefully delineating each specific character. The problem is with the production. The chapters are poorly labeled which is no surprise on Audible, but it’s almost criminal that the chapter divisions are completely random: chapters end in mid-chapter (in relation to the book) or mid-paragraph, or even mid-sentence. It’s impossible to cross reference between the print novel and the audiobook and with a book such as this, cross referencing is essential.

It's San Francisco, 1928, and Sam Spade is a wisecracking, womanising Private Investigator. Missing husbands and unfaithful wives are his usual stock-in-trade, but when the beautifully distressed Miss Wonderley calls he gets involved in a dangerous caper most people would run a mile from. Miss Wonderley asks Sam's partner, Miles Archer, to shadow Floyd Thursby, whom she maintains has kidnapped her sister. But then Archer is shot dead, and Miss Wonderley's story turns out to be a lie.

It should be about the topic not the lecturer
Revisado: 08-29-19
While the outline for the course is interesting the lecturer is completely insensitive to the medium he's working in. Sure he's knowledgeable but the lectures are filled with strange yells "listen my friends" and lame, distracting jokes. The attempt to define "baroque" is a perfect example. Because the subject interests me I continue to listen but the performer is really hard to take when he goes off the rails

Strange choices by the narrator
Revisado: 02-13-19
The novel is an important document in American culture and worth reading even though the depiction of slaves and African-Americans is unfortunate at best. When read in context, the book can give insight into the mindset of those nostalgic for a past that never was, and those who try to pretend that slavery wasn't a hateful and shameful part of our past.
The narrator is competent enough in the descriptive passages but makes many poor choices when doing voices for the dialogue. Both Ashley Wilkes and Rhett Butler are rendered with voices that are almost obnoxious to hear and they're both main characters in a very long book. A lot of the voices are poorly done.

Obviously Mr. Arkin's acting talent comes from the personal spiritual/soulful/inquisitive journey he's been making for most of his life. This performance is very intimate and challenges one to consider one's own journey
