Historia
Tetris is perhaps the most instantly recognizable, most popular video game ever made. But the fascinating story of its origins is lesser known. How did an obscure Soviet programmer working on frail, antiquated computers create a product that has earned nearly $1 billion in sales? How did an inspired makeshift game turn into a worldwide sensation that has been displayed at the Museum of Modern Art, inspired a Hollywood movie, and been played in outer space?

A fascinating story but with bad narration
Revisado: 01-15-25
A great history of the convoluted story of one of the greatest games of all time. The story and style of the book was great, but the author's choice to read it himself was unwise. The narrator's pronounced lisp and tendancy to read too fast was distracting and caused me to have to think about and decipher what I had just heard to be sure I had gotten it right. The book would have been an easy 5-star recommedation from me if it had been better narrated.

Historia
In the 1970s, while their contemporaries were protesting the computer as a tool of dehumanization and oppression, a motley collection of college dropouts, hippies, and electronics fanatics were engaged in something much more subversive. Obsessed with the idea of getting computer power into their own hands, they launched from their garages a hobbyist movement that grew into an industry, and ultimately a social and technological revolution.

Bogged down in one era
Revisado: 11-19-24
The information overall was interesting enough, but the author spent far too much time the very early Altair-era, micro-dissecting that time ftom a dozen different directions. It took far too long to get to the heart of the age of the Apple II series, Sinclair, Commodore, Atari 400/800 and such where home and personal computers truly took off and became relevant to non-hobbyist users. Atari and Sinclair were barely mentioned. Commodore was similarly lightly touched upon, mainly with the Pet and C64 being given brief credit for their place in sales history ( the Vic20 wasn't even mentioned). More time and detail was given to Apple and rightly so, but it took TEN CHAPTERS TO PROPERLY GET THERE. All in all, this is more a book for computer historians looking gor details on the very start of micro-computers than anyone else.

Nitro is a story about much more than WCW and the Monday Night Wars. It is a story of an era, a time in which the media and cultural landscape precipitated - and later supported - pro wrestling's mainstream popularity. It is a story of how a company made in the image of an intuitively brilliant risk-taker betrayed its original promise. It is a story of how a handful of men, each struggling with their own limitations, facilitated a public obsession that changed television forever.

A good history with perhaps a bit too much financial minutae
Revisado: 08-06-24
Overall, I enjoyed the story of WCW (having been there through the NWO and after years). My one issue is that the author killed the pacing at times by getting far too deep into the details of the financial data and mechinations. Other than that, it is a great look at the all to brief Monday Night Wars and why that era was the best thing that ever happened to professional wrestling.

Historia
Skip the iPhone, the iPod, and the Macintosh. If you want to understand how Apple Inc. became an industry behemoth, look no further than the 1977 Apple II. The Apple II was a versatile piece of hardware, but its most compelling story isn't found in the feat of its engineering, the personalities of Apple's founders, or the way it set the stage for the company's multibillion-dollar future. Instead, historian Laine Nooney shows, what made the Apple II iconic was its software.

Boring, tedious, sanctimonious and badly narrated
Revisado: 07-24-24
It takes a lot of effort to turn a book on the era of the Apple II computer into a boring slog, but this author spared no effort in doing so. When she isn't bashing you over the head with icons of the industry (Jobs, Wozniak, Gates, et al) getting where they got thanks to 'male, white, middle-class, Harvard-educated privledge' and taking shots at the entire industry and hobby of computing's 'whiteness', the author is inflating her word count by taking four sentences to say something that could be relayed in two. Her constantly meandering, overly verbose prose caused me, more often than not, to lose interest and my attention to begin drifting.
And the narrator was a horrible choice. If you are going to have a book that reads more like a scolding, pompous lecture than an entertaining work on the Apple II era and why it was so important to the history of personal computing, DO NOT have it read by someone who sounds like a breathy, slow, dime store cheesy romance novel narrator. The narrator's drawn out phrasing and pauses added at least three hours to the length of what this audiobook should have been.
Give this book a pass and hope for something better.

An interesting history of select gaming moments with questionable narration
Revisado: 05-21-24
Overall, I found this audiobook interesting enough, though it broke little new ground from other books on the subject that I have previously read or listened to. The author tries a bit too hard to work in pop cultural references through the book, but that was a minor gripe. My major issue was the narrator, who seemed to be trying to affect a Rod Serling "Twilight Zone" voice and cadence. I personally found this highly annoying and distracting. And the very end of the book suddenly switched to a poor quality "phoned in" reading by the author with numerous pops and silences that felt almost like it was censored. Basically: a good enough value if you can get it with an Audible sale.

This book offers eye-opening details and insights delivered in a creative style that mirrors the industry it reveals. An innovative work from one of the industry’s original innovators.

A meandering stream of conciousness tale
Revisado: 03-05-24
I was looking forward to this book about one of the most infamous titles in video gaming history (I lived through that time and HAD the E.T. game) and the company it came from. While the book is not horrible, it is frustratingly random throughout as the author wanders from this topic to that bit of personal history to " oh hey, this topic makes me think of this OTHER topic, let me interrupt the flow of the narrative to go there!" You get some of the later history of Atari and the crash of video gaming in the early 80s, but overall, this book just made me wish it had given me more. Not bad, simply mediocre, such as the E.T. game could have been were it given more than 5 weeks of creation time.

Historia
In this long-awaited memoir, songwriter and keyboardist Jonathan Cain takes us on an odyssey from center stage with Journey when all America was listening to songs like "Don't Stop Believin'", "Faithfully", and "Open Arms", to his hope and faith today. He tells of the thrilling moments when the music came together and offers an inside look at why Steve Perry left and the extraordinary story of their gifted new vocalist, Arnel Pineda. Cain's journey wasn't always easy - and his true arrival in life had more to do with faith than fame.

An absolute chore to listen to....
Revisado: 08-31-23
This book is not a history of a band and one member's life through it. This book is all about one man's relationship with his god. Yes, he was in Journey and yes, he helped create some of their most iconic songs. But that is not the focus of this book. From start to finish, he applies his faith by the trowel-full onto the head of a massive sledgehammer and then spends the entirety of the text smashing you in the face with it. Does he go through his years with Journey? Sure, but not with the detail and depth you would hope. And his narration of his own prose had several instances where he "broke down" as he read that all came across as contrived and scripted/coached. I listened to the whole book because I paid for it, but it was a struggle to get through it. And unfortunately, the best part was hearing "Audible hopes you enjoyed this program". No.... not really.
