Since Olivia has always been my favorite character in this series, I was looking forward to the book highlighting her life. However, Olivia seemed to lose her sassiness and assertiveness when she finally gets a love life. Disappointed!

While Eddy the war widow was an especially sympathetic character, the plot revolving paid killers and foreign agents was not that interesting. I did enjoy the women's church club where girls and women learn self-defense and how to handle weapons.

I am bored with Lydia, the frazzled mother of 7 children whose husband is deployed most of the time. Who has that many children when she knew she would be a single parent most of the time? And what type of man chooses to spend 15 years rarely seeing his own kids?

Strong and Relatable Female Characters

The author is a gifted writer, particularly good at creating exceptional female characters. Shadows Landing is an interesting small town founded by pirates 300 years ago, although pirates are not authentically portrayed.

All the town folks seem to think that pirates were like Johny Depp, romantic and adventurous, rather than violent criminals. It's strange to me that a town with so many military and law enforcement residents appear to idolize thieves and killers.

While I have enjoyed this series about a small town settled by pirates, I am confused by how pirates are portrayed. The plot of the 2nd book involves finding a treasure stolen by pirates 300 years ago who murdered innocent people including 3 children. Of course, not all pirates were cold blooded killers, but they were all thieves and violent - not exactly praiseworthy ancestors.

Birth Control Desperately Needed

While the overwhelming majority of the story was engrossing and entertaining, Shadows Landing is in desperate need of a family planning clinic to provide birth control products and lessons.

When a soldier has EIGHT children he could not afford to support and was forced to take on dangerous missions for the additional income, I wanted to slap him silly. He was rarely home to spend time with his young children; evidently he was just home long enough to get his wife pregnant again.

This series promotes community service, friendship, kindness, self-sufficiency and loyalty. I am disappointed that it does NOT promote responsible adult sexual activity and family planning, in spite of all the options available with modern medicine.

PS, Glad the author included 2 lesbian characters from her Kentucky series, proving that Southerns can be open-minded.

Drowning Poppy's Mother

While I admire Jasmine Webb and Poppy the main character of this series, I really wanted to drown Poppy's mother. This heartless vampire was so over the top that she was almost unbelievable. What kind of parent would disown a daughter who refuses to go to law school? Most mothers would be thrilled to raise a healthy, responsible daughter with good values.

Poppy was relatable, willing to put in the effort necessary to become a published author in addition to helping to solve crimes with Ophilia, another fascinating female character. I like how Nick, the journalist who Poppy started dating, was a minor part of the plot - nice if things worked out but not critical to her happiness and long-term goals.

Mixed Jersey Feelings

Having spent most of my adult life in South Jersey, I am always intrigued by books set in the Garden State. I have mixed feelings about lawyer Sandy, who seemed entirely competent in professional situations while rather immature in personal relationships.

When Sandy meets actor Patrick, she is not impressed by his good looks or wealth, yet she is constantly insecure about her physical appearance. I don't even remember how she is described by the author, just how she keeps saying how she is NOT gorgeous or slim as a fashion model or actress.

Sandy and her BBF Angie keep finding themselves in humorous situations, with lots of references to being "Jersey Girls". Many of their insider jokes can only be appreciated by NJ residents of at least a decade.

While the authors are skilled with creating humorous dialogue and unique characters, the constant redneck jokes got old. Sorry but not every person born and raised in a small mountain town is uneducated and immature. Sorry, but not every woman who works as a model or actress is superficial or possesses a lower IQ.

If only the authors had spent as much time on character development as they did when describing sexual encounters. Listeners learned much less about the thoughts and feelings of the main couple than we do about their body parts. The small-town setting and residents were much more interesting than a minute-by-minute description of each love scene.

In this third book, Shannon is physically assaulted and verbally threatened multiple times by a brutal former high school acquaintance. For no reason, Shannon does not report these assaults to the police until the dead body of the brute's former girlfriend is discovered in a house that Shannon is renovating. Why would Shannon wait?
