Historia
After a long, cold, and snowy winter it looks as though spring may be arriving early in North Harbor. Sarah Grayson is busy at her store, Second Chance, and she's looking forward to an afternoon break from the hustle and bustle, tagging along to an open house with her friend, Detective Michelle Andrews. But it turns out the house has a haunted history, and when a ghost hunter is found dead on the premises, Sarah knows the best way to arrive at a solution is by looking into the not-so-dearly departed.

Revisado: 02-26-25
Rather than criticizing the narrator, the quality of audio productions lies with the editor and director. As always, the plot and characters are entertaining and humorous.

Historia
Although Sarah Grayson is often tending to the contained chaos of her delightful secondhand store in North Harbor, Maine, plus dealing with the quirky personality of her rescue cat, Elvis, she still takes an occasional night off. But her evening out comes to an abrupt end when Sarah discovers Stella Hall, a member of the library board, standing over a body in the street.

While I also hate when a publisher changes the narrator mid-way through a series, the author maintains the quality better than most do.

Historia
Sarah and Elvis can always be found at a charming secondhand shop in the village of North Harbor, Maine. Despite the small-town setting, the daring duo often find themselves wrapped up in murder, but luckily they have help - a quirky group of senior citizens runs an amateur detective agency called Charlotte's Angels out of the store. The Angels are hired to look into who is sabotaging cat shows in the state, and they decide the best way to do that is to send Elvis the cat undercover as a contestant. But then one of the cat show volunteers is murdered just before the latest competition.

Clean to Those with an Open Mind
Revisado: 02-26-25
I love, love, love this series and feel the need to defend against the critics who complained that a CLEAN story can't contain a non-traditional relationship. Of course, those are likely the same folks who believe all forms of human affection is DIRTY. FYI, there is little to no explicit gore or sexual situations but - horror of horrors - there are diverse characters.

Good and Bad
Revisado: 02-20-25
While I loved Chet the dog, I find Bernie the former cop more annoying and less intelligent. Since Chet was a trained K9 dog, he attempts to "tell" Bernie when he finds a clue, yet Bernie seems oblivious to some obvious evidence. Also, Bernie seems incapable of running a financially successful business, just fumbling from one cash crisis to another.
FYI, I tried the next few books in this series but became frustrated that Bernie never appears to learn from his mistakes. As a dedicated father, Bernie absolutely loves his son Charlie yet fails to make any effort to provide financial stability. It's just not entertaining when a parent does not pay child support - kids require lots of money.

Historia
The year is 1920: Flying in the face of convention, legendary American adventuress Beryl Helliwell never fails to surprise and shock. The last thing her adoring public would expect is that she craves some peace and quiet. The humdrum hamlet of Walmsley Parva in the English countryside seems just the ticket. And, honestly, until America comes to its senses and repeals Prohibition, Beryl has no intention of returning stateside and subjecting herself to bathtub gin.

Devil in Details
Revisado: 02-19-25
While this could have been an amazing story, the author did not make the details match reality.
American Beryl was introduced as a multiple divorcee in 1920 when divorce was extremely rare. Only divorced women of great wealth or entertainers were accepted in polite society. It was also stated that Beryl intentionally avoided motherhood at a time that birth control was non-existent. Somehow, Beryl managed to travel the world alone without being labeled a harlot and receive positive publicity in international newspapers.
In addition, English Edwina inherited her father's estate at a time when unmarried women had no property rights - everything would have gone to the nearest male relative. Edwina somehow managed to survive for at least a few years with no income, before finally deciding to take in boarders. Her family background was hardly mentioned or explained - there had to be a distant cousin somewhere.
The age of these 2 friends was never defined, but any lady born in the 1800s would have obeyed strict rules of decorum in fear of being ostracized, especially in a small village. Why was it suddenly acceptable that Beryl and Edwina could visit a man's home un-chaperoned or accuse someone of murder without evidence.

Historia
When Lucy Berberian quits her Philadelphia law firm and heads home to Ocean Crest, she knows what she's getting - the scent of funnel cake, the sight of the wooden roller coaster, and the tastes of her family's Mediterranean restaurant. Lucy could do without Heather Banks, though. The Gucci-toting ex-cheerleader is still as nasty as she was back in high school...and she's just taken over as the local health inspector. Just minutes after eating at the Kebab Kitchen - where she's tallied up a whole list of bogus violations - she falls down dead in the street.

AC Expressway NOT in CMC
Revisado: 02-11-25
Since I lived in Cape May County for more than 30 years, I am always intrigued by a series set in an area I know well. The fictional town of Ocean Crest was described as 7 or 8 miles north of Cape May City, the southern tip of NJ.
So, I wanted to scream when the author placed the Atlantic City Expressway in the wrong county. FYI, the ONLY highway in Cape May County is the Garden State Parkway which starts in Cape May City and goes north to the NY state line. The AC Expressway runs east/west from Philly to Atlantic City.
While this series has some potential, the main character seems awfully young for her actual age. Since Lucy managed to graduate from law school and practice in Philly for years, she has to be at least 30 and too mature and/or smart to squabble with a high school rival. Yes, the other girl was obnoxious, but most adults do NOT revert to childish behavior that easily.
Also, Lucy would have learned more subtle techniques for asking questions in law school. In her attempt to solve Heather's murder, Lucy is brass, insulting and downright rude at times.
Note to author: don't create an intelligent, educated female character than have her act like she is the bimbo on a reality show.

Best Maine Characters
Revisado: 01-30-25
This humorous mystery series is extremely entertaining, with a wide variety of characters from teens to senior citizens.
There is no gore, graphic sex or profanity which totally suits the genre; romantic relationships are not the focus.

Keep on Listening
Revisado: 01-30-25
This Golden Girls meets Murder She Wrote series just seems to get better. I have all 10 or 11 of the books and desperately hope there will be more.
FYI, there is no graphic violence or sexual situations but let's not call it clean - human intimacy is not dirty just unnecessary for entertainment to some adults.

Historia
Sarah Grayson owns Second Chance, a shop that sells lovingly refurbished items, in the charming town of North Harbor, Maine. But she couldn't run the store without the help of her right-hand man, Mac - or her dashing rescue cat, Elvis. Mac's life before North Harbor has always been a little bit mysterious, but it becomes a lot more intriguing when a woman from his past shows up in town, and then turns up dead. Suspicion falls on Mac, but Sarah - and Elvis - know he can't be the killer, and they hope they can prove his innocence quick as a whisker.

Team Mac
Revisado: 01-30-25
Mac is almost a perfect male character: loyal, supportive and easy going. It seems too good to be true that a non-white character would be so easily accepted in a small Maine town, even in the 2020s. I understand why the author chose to gloss over the reality of an inter-racial romantic relationship, but it rings false.

Historia
Faye Longchamp has lost nearly everything, except for her quick mind and a grim determination to keep her ancestral home, Joyeuse, a moldering plantation. When the property taxes rise beyond her means, Faye sets out to save Joyeuse by digging for artifacts on her property and the surrounding national wildlife refuge and selling them on the black market. A tiny bit of that dead glory would pay a year’s taxes, and a big, valuable chunk of the past would save her home forever. But instead of potsherds and arrowheads, she uncovers a woman’s shattered skull, a Jackie Kennedy-style earring nestled against its cheek bone.

Appeals to Those with Higher IQ and Values
Revisado: 01-24-25
I was not surprised that many reviewers found this detailed story of racism in southern America boring and not worth their effort. Sadly, many European Americans do not want to be reminded that their ancestors invaded a foreign country and committed genocide against all those who looked different: Natives, Africans, Asians etc.
The author created fascinating characters with unique backgrounds, showing how events from previous centuries are still relevant today. Florida in 2025 is still a place where racial hatred is alive and well, being strongly supported by too many residents who claim to follow the carpenter who preached love, compassion and kindness thousands of years ago.
