Historia
It’s the autumn of 1890, and a spate of bombings has hit London. The newspapers are full of fevered speculation about anarchists, antimonarchists and Fenians. But one man suspects an even more sinister hand behind the violence. Sherlock Holmes believes Professor Moriarty is orchestrating a nationwide campaign of terror, but to what end? At the same time, a bizarrely garbed figure has been spotted on the rooftops and in the grimy back alleys of the capital.

Historia
All murder mysteries follow a simple set of rules. Grant McAllister, an author of crime fiction and professor of mathematics, once sat down and worked them all out. But that was 30 years ago. Now he's living a life of seclusion on a quiet Mediterranean island - until Julia Hart, a sharp, ambitious editor, knocks on his door. His early work is being republished and together the two of them must revisit those old stories: an author hiding from his past and an editor keen to understand it.

The first story is a real slog, I almost returned the book several times during the first 45 minutes. Only the fact I was driving stopped me. If you can make it to the one hour mark, things start to pick up. The end result feels somehow unsatisfying as a murder mystery.

Incredibly bad Scottish accents, but I persevered.
Revisado: 03-07-23
I am really not sure how they decided to use this narrator. Considering how much of the book is set in Scotland and has Scottish characters, it would seem an obvious choice to choose a narrator who can do a Scottish accent. Unfortunately, Luke Daniels really cannot. While Irish, I have lived in Scotland for the last 30 years and have no idea what his attempts were meant to sound like.
Honestly, considering the main character makes so much use of a text to speech app, you could possibly have produced a more listenable book with a good selection of computer generated voices.
I did persist with the book however, as the actual story is entertaining, well paced, and makes generally good use of Scottish words. (Though I did have to go and check what an ascot was, that seems to be an American word for what we call a cravat in Britain.) I did enjoyed the novel itself a great deal.
I often get added enjoyment from a well narrated book, but situations like this make me sad I can no longer read paper books for health reasons.
I am dismayed to see the same narrator has been chosen for the second book in the series.

I got all excited by the description of the Mac n Cheese given by KWAME ONWUACHI near the end of the podcast so downloaded the pdf. The published recipe used different ingredients and a different method. Can we have the recipe for the one he describes using the eggs & carnation milk with the one hour covered oven cook? Did the person putting together the PDF not listen to the book?

Heavy handed Christian message
Revisado: 07-13-14
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I think the strong Christian nature of this book should have been mentioned in the description.
What could G.P. Taylor have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
The story telling style got very monotonous.
What about Garrett Cornelius’s performance did you like?
Good range of voices. I think it was only his reading that made me finish this book.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Annoyance. Boredom.
Any additional comments?
I began to wonder if the Rev Taylor had written the book using words like Jesus and Devil, then searched and replaced for his character names at the end.

Good book, but bad female voices
Revisado: 05-29-12
How did the narrator detract from the book?
This is a good story but the narration is not good, all the young female characters sound like startled leprechauns.
Any additional comments?
If you enjoyed the other honourverse books I would recommend it though, despite the narrator.

Not a good book to abridge
Revisado: 01-04-11
The original is a long book so this abridged version does not work very well. I liked the setting and would like to read the full version but it just felt like you were leaping from point to point in this version to get the key plot covered.
