John Lee, an excellent narrator, adds emphatic value to a pretty good Nesbo novel. Lee has his rightful place on the mountain top of excellent narrators. His crisp delivery keeps the listener involved even when the narrative wanders a touch. That is not to say that this story is not among Jo Nessbo’s better tales. It is. I was engaged throughout.

Gerard Doyle narrating Adrian McKinty returning to Northern Ireland … the result is an excellent audio book. Sean Duffy’s last case (allegedly) is at the center of the story of a missing teenage traveler. At the edges is, of course, the traveler culture, triple agents, MI-5, the IRA and retirement for Sean and Crabby. Doyle makes the humor and the thrilling tension as natural as the twisting plot. When the listener catches up and thinks the end is near, McKinty delightfully takes another turn and another. Best procedural series that I have read or listened to. McKinty and Doyle are a heavenly match.

Demon Copperhead is a very rewarding coming of age story from start to finish and a surprisingly authentic tale of an often ignored part of America. replete with much sadness and much humor. It is a story that ends at the perfect moment. A master storyteller weaves the reader in her thrall and a world comes alive through a five star performance by the reader.

This is a story that is listenable in spite of the reader. It is not brilliant as all the slough house stories are. There aren’t many laughs. The ending is fairly predictable. The beginning is slightly confusing. It is creditworthy but not nearly as good as Herron’s earlier effort with the same character, Zoe.

Mick Herron is as cynical and thus as enjoyable as ever. The narrator is the incomparable Gerard Doyle. The story is 50% espionage and 50% mystery. For slow horses fans, there is the lagniappe of the back story of both JK Coe and the bewigged Dame Ingrid.

Michael Connelly has crafted a near perfect story rendered into an excellent audiobook. The readers are as good as readers get. If this is the passing of the Bosch torch to Renee Ballard, fans will accept the triumph of the narrative.

The only surprise was that I stayed with this thoroughly predictable mystery. The reader is good but there is way too much “explaining” of how clever Cross is. It is a good book for someone who likes the obvious explained again and again. Not as painful as a visit to the dentist but close.

A good enough reader cannot save a wretched story. What there is of plot is just silly: Robert Kennedy forces a Republican congressman to infiltrate the Sinatra rat pack. The whole story is as ridiculous as the prior sentence. Ancient gossip substitutes for dialogue. Every character exhibits the same “wit.” But the story is witless. Tapper is a good newsman, slumming in Hollywood nonsense while in a futile search for plot, defined characters and anything that may make a reader or listener care.

It is stingy to only award five stars. Although you can hear most of the “twist” fairly early on, the reading is excellent and the story captures one’s attention throughout. I must add that I listen to a few books each month; and this one was simply one of the best. It is particularly good because each narrator is excellent and perfectly cast. The interstices of character and plot lock you in. Please don’t misunderstand my comment about the twist, the book is an excellent, thoughtful and thought provoking entertainment. Prior to purchase, I read no reviews; and thus there were no spoilers. I recommend that any reader/listener simply should get into the story after setting aside a night and those precious early morning hours.

This book is wonderfully written and performed. Like Le Carre, Harris writes superb fiction disguised as a mystery-thriller. Fatherland is an alternative history with strong echoes of today’s jackbooted politics.
