Historia
Addressing the fundamental questions about how to live, Meditations for Mortals offers a powerful new way to take action on what counts: a guiding philosophy of life Oliver Burkeman calls “imperfectionism.” It helps us tackle challenges as they crop up in our daily lives: our finite time, the lure of distraction, the impossibility of doing anything perfectly.

Actually helpful
Revisado: 11-19-24
Mindset, as loaded as that term may be to some, is the focus of this book. If you're a fan of his already, this distills a lot of what he says about time and productivity from the perspective of mental choice, changing your perspective toward quality of time spent as the most important thing, again. I liked the language he used in this one, even the resignation to 'what is will be' part of the perspective. But you don't have to take my word for it.

Armed with only the clothes on their backs and zero survival skills, they fight to overcome hunger, thirst, deadly wildlife—and most terrifyingly—decades of accrued resentment. Henry and Nomi are thrilled to find out they’re going to be parents. There is so much to think about, so many decisions they’ll need to make, about feeding schedules and childcare and schools. But there’s one decision they never would have imagined facing, and even considering the choice is a minefield of emotions and experiences and expectations. After all, the only thing that hangs in the balance is the course of their child’s life.

Reminder to readers: this is fictional
Revisado: 09-25-24
To posit changing a baby's race before it's born, or even the choice to, is problematic. I think I get the point of exploring it and provoking some thoughts if this could be real...maybe that's what the writer intended and that's all they intended. The other reviews of this attack it or praise it as if it was a documentary. Try to remember when listening/reading this that it is fictional, not irresponsible or world changing. Seriously. Who can erase race in a short story so effectively that everyone walks away feeling more equal to all other humans? While I wish a writer could, none are perfect enough to, even the best of them. The actors did a good job and represented what was written quite well. I honestly went up and down emotionally in equal measure, but that could be because I am a black American and almost had a biracial kid/family. Some of what the female protagonist preached hit home, Other things she said, as well as some of what the husband said made my skin crawl. And I did think a lot about how race is a construct that divides after finishing this, so maybe I can walk away from it with a more neutralized view of the author's intent than some. I think whoever this topic calls to should give it a listen and decide for themselves what to take away, but avoiding the topic altogether, even in fictional work like this, does no one any good. Invite a perspective, an opinion, without demanding that it give you new news on an old theme. Just take the walk and listen without being forensic on a piece of fiction. That exercise in itself is a worthy one.

Sure, there’s an ex-husband hanging around - Owen likes to pop round a bit too often - but everything is civilised and amicable. She has life all tied up. The pull of this story was really strong and it's main narration was great. I enjoyed the plot twisting thru to the end. It definitely kept my attention throughout.

Historia
There are breaking points in all our lives when we realize that the way things have been done before just don’t work for us anymore, be it the way we approach our relationships, our belief systems, our work, our education, even our rest. For activist, philanthropist, and CEO Rachel E. Cargle, reimagining—the act of creating in our minds that which does not exist but that we believe can and should—has been a lifelong process. Reimagining served as the most powerful catalyst for Cargle’s personal transformation from a small-town Christian wife to an incisive queer feminist voice of a generation.

Black woman clarity. I have no notes.
Revisado: 09-02-23
This memoir-manifesto almost read like my personal journal. I identified so closely to Rachel's story, I found myself saying 'amen' repeatedly as she read her own words in this audiobook.
Are you a black woman craving a way to clearly navigate your own life design amidst the racially aggressive backdrop that is middle class America?
Are you tired of how the conditioning all around us has affected your relationships, your self definition, your faith, your education and your career ideals?
Multi-passionate?
Need 'a word' from a smart sister that can give you soothing clarity to everything we feel everyday?
This book is truth. Her story will give your heart and mind a place to rest, because her voice is ours.
In other words...I loved it.

Controversial precepts set to a relatable plot
Revisado: 07-30-23
The realism in the problems queried in his plays are what make them so good. I enjoyed them all, the Moors story a bit less, and they all held to the end quite well.
Easy to listen to a few times over, IMO.

Historia
Jack and Karen are an ordinary, happily married couple. They've been together for years and are convinced every problem can be worked through. Until Karen finds an odd text on Jack's phone, and her confrontation leads to a shock revelation: Jack is gay, and he wants a male lover. Seeking stability for themselves and security for their teenage children, they settle on a 'closed loop' arrangement, whereby they stay together and Jack has a boyfriend. So begins a new type of marriage, where small deceptions and unspoken fantasies are replaced with radical honesty.

Not a comedy but a well done drama
Revisado: 07-08-23
I didn't laugh much listening to this so I think it may have been miscategorized. The story was really good and relatable and the actors, including the younger ones did a great job.
But this was more drama than comedy. The plot was believable and ringing true for many whose lives parallel in some way because the writers did explore the emotional hits to all involved. I did hope for a little more from Karen's mom later in Series 3 and her real feelings about Jack.
Jack was as expected.
Ben was just gorgeous acting.
Naomi was a delightfully annoying pill and Emma was a sweet little hero.
And what to say about Karen. Saint Karen. She was real. The truth she expressed was as true as any straight cis het woman experiencing a 'Jack' and dealing with reality.
Very well done...sans comedy in the subtitle though.

Historia
August in Edinburgh, and thousands of performers of all stripes have flocked to the Fringe Festival. Among them is Charles Paris filling in at the last minute after a student actress breaks a leg and has to drop out. Showcasing an earnest one-man show in a sea of stand-up comics is a bit of a gamble, but at least he's acting, and with a Charles Paris production, what could possibly go wrong?

Worth the wait 'true-to-form' Charles Paris fix
Revisado: 07-07-23
If you have been enjoying all the Charles Paris stories dramatized, and led by the awesome Bill Nighy, this one was also worth waiting for...but all of my perfect scores in this review do come from someone who bought the pre-order and waited for this one and will again for the next...take that how you will.
The juxtaposition of woke/patron of youth themes against 'veterans in the theater game' was a fun plot and pulling his agent into some of the sleuthing setup was a nice add to this one.
I loved it.

Historia
As the old sailor's adage goes, a woman on board invites bad luck, a superstation that turned out to be true for the enemies of notorious pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read. As quick to draw their cutlasses as they were to fall in love, Anne and Mary sailed the Caribbean leaving a trail of looted treasure, outfoxed law enforcement, and treacherous ex-lovers (suitably dealt with) in their wake. This series explores themes of equality, freedom, love and survival.

Way better than I expected
Revisado: 07-04-23
The actors chosen for this were perfect for the story and in all places the plot struggled, the actors carried it well. I was connected to the highlighted characters and binged thru to the end, wanting to know what was happening next. Mark & Mary...loved them the best.
This was very well done.
