Enjoyable novella.

The work starts out strong and poetic. Surrealistic and inexplicable moments happen throughout the book. The ending is not as satisfying as the beginning.

It's early one morning on a hot day in August, and millennial congressman Alexander Paine Wilson (R), planning his first reelection campaign and in deep denial about his sexuality, receives a mysterious, over-sized FedEx delivery on his front stoop. Inside is a gigantic taxidermied aardvark. This outrageous, edge-of-your-seat novel hurtles between contemporary Washington, DC, where Wilson tries to get rid of the unsightly beast before it destroys his career, and Victorian England - where we meet Titus Downing, the taxidermist who stuffed the aardvark....

I could not take a break from this book. I had to see how the braided storyline intertwined. Darkly funny and imaginative. I don't understand why some say it is surreal. I love the surreal, but this was easy to follow and reality based. Despite the deep coincidences and possible ghost - although I think the ghost was just the narrator's perception. I loved the POV shifts. I only wish it was longer.

Historia
Barely five feet tall, suicidally courageous, obsessed with tigers, and sexually eccentric, Mabel Stark was the greatest female tiger trainer in history. Clad in her leather suits and married five times, she was the Mae West of tiger taming. In the 1910s and 1920s, when circus was the most popular entertainment in America, Mabel Stark was the biggest attraction for the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey circus.

Revisado: 07-29-20
Fiercely feminist historical novel. not for the faint of heart. The book includes a great deal of sex (not all of it pleasant or consensual), self harm, and early 1900s mental hospitals abusing women. Difficult subject matter but despite that the book is overall fun. Great performance by the reader..

Historia
One of William Faulkner’s finest novels, As I Lay Dying, originally published in 1930, remains a captivating and stylistically innovative work. The story revolves around a grim yet darkly humorous pilgrimage, as Addie Bundren’s family sets out to fulfill her last wish: to be buried in her native Jefferson, Mississippi, far from the miserable backwater surroundings of her married life.

Excellent book and performance.
Revisado: 02-12-20
I did prefer The Sound and the Fury, Intruder in the Dust, As I Lay Dying, and Absalom, Absalom. This is so much better than many if his later works. Complicated characters. Like most of Faulkner's works - the book is focused on racism, murder, hypocrisy, and out of wedlock pregnancy. Beautifully written. You will enjoy it. Trigger warning - suggestion of violent sex scenes (not graphic) and racial slurs (used by villainous characters)

This novel is a brilliant first-person narrative of the rise and fall of the Norse gods - retold from the point of view of the world's ultimate trickster, Loki. A number-one best seller in the UK, The Gospel of Loki tells the story of Loki's recruitment from the underworld of Chaos; his many exploits on behalf of his one-eyed master, Odin; through to his eventual betrayal of the gods and the fall of Asgard.

In a warren of crumbling buildings and desperate people called the Old City, there stands a hospital with cinderblock walls that echo the screams of the poor souls inside. In the hospital, there is a woman. Her hair, once blond, hangs in tangles down her back. She doesn't remember why she's in such a terrible place. Just a tea party long ago, and long ears, and blood.

Historia
In Teaching to Transgress, Bell Hooks - writer, teacher, and insurgent black intellectual - writes about a new kind of education, education as the practice of freedom. Teaching students to "transgress" against racial, sexual, and class boundaries in order to achieve the gift of freedom is, for Hooks, the teacher's most important goal. Bell Hooks speakes to the heart of education today: how can we rethink teaching practices in the age of multiculturalism? What do we do about teachers who do not want to teach, and students who do not want to learn? How should we deal with racism and sexism in the classroom? Full of passion and politics, Teaching to Transgress combines a practical knowledge of the classroom with a deeply felt connection to the world of emotions and feelings. This is the rare book about teachers and students that dares to raise questions about eros and rage, grief and reconciliation, and the future of teaching itself.
