Historia
Detective Peter Diamond, chief of the Avon and Somerset Murder Squad, is taking a short holiday in the country. His former colleague Julie Hargreaves has invited Diamond and his partner, Paloma, to visit the idyllic village of Baskerville (no relation to the Sherlock Holmes story, so he's told). It turns out Julie's invitation was not without ulterior motives. The woman who owns the village's largest dairy farm has been convicted of manslaughter following a terrible accident in her grain silo.

Diamond in the Rough
Revisado: 12-20-24
Maybe it’s because I’m older with a bit too much girth and my wife has taken to calling my friends and me “grumpy old men,) but I love the Peter Diamond series more with each addition.

Historia
Your dad’s not a good person. Your dad killed people, son. These are some of the last words Jack Givins’ father spoke to him before he was whisked away by witness protection, leaving Jack and his mother to pick up the shattered pieces of their lives as best they could. Years later, Jack is a grown man with problems of his own. He’s a talented but struggling author, barely scraping by on the royalties from his moderately successful first book. So when the U.S. Marshals approach him with a lucrative opportunity, he’s in no position to turn them down.

Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

I realize the author is thrilled with this narrator, but I am very disappointed. I listened through it twice and found him lacking as well as distracting.

Brilliant. Gutty, Spy Novel
Revisado: 11-18-24
I was riveted from the start on this one. A gritty spy thriller with a really good mole hunt. I had no idea until the end who betrayed who. The book also reinforces my suspicions that CIA leadership is piss poor and always has been.

A spy is dead. A legend is born. This is how it all began. The explosive prequel to Casino Royale, from best-selling author Anthony Horowitz. Forever and a Day is the story of the birth of a legend, in the brutal underworld of the French Riviera, taking listeners into the very beginning of James Bond’s illustrious career and the formation of his identity.

Outstanding Story
Revisado: 10-29-24
This may be my favorite Bond novel. Set in the mid 50’s - Horowitz spins the story of Bond’s first mission as 007.
What a story it is! While it includes a necessary freak Bond adversary and a beautiful woman, Horowitz’s Bond is not super human by any means. He’s resourceful, perceptive, intelligent.
Great narrator, but for the first time ever, I actually slowed the narration speed to .95, in order to improve comprehension.

And the second is a baby elephant. As his search for clues takes him across the teeming city of Mumbai, from its grand high rises to its sprawling slums and deep into its murky underworld, Chopra begins to suspect that there may be a great deal more to both his last case and his new ward than he thought.

Charming

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. Normally that’s worth at least 4 stars. The only reason I give it 3 stars is my apathy regarding its ending. But you shouldn’t let this review turn you off. It really is unique and charming.

Revisado: 10-10-24
It’s not a simple, cute British whodunnit. It is smart, creative, witty and entirely unique. Osmon is genius with his character development, plot and especially dialogue.
The narration is seamless with the writing. One of the best narrations I’ve ever listened to…

Brilliant!
Revisado: 09-26-24
Robotham is, well, he’s brilliant. This novel is focused on a fiercely persistent Sikh detective in London who with the help of Vincent Ruiz, brings down a huge group of sex traffickers.
While Joseph O’laughlin and more recently Cyrus Haven are the main characters in his novels, (and in this novel Ali Barba), Vincent Ruiz is the best detective character in fiction, despite the fact he’s always in the role of a supporting character. He makes Ali and O’ Laughlin better in every regard.
Nevertheless, Ali Barba is a determined, if flawed detective I wish we’d hear more from in subsequent novels.

Historia
If there’s one thing detective Bath Peter Diamond has no patience for, it’s a dumb git trying to get involved in one of his investigations - for example, a Philip Marlowe-wannabe private investigator like the self-styled Johnny Getz. But fate has saddled Diamond with this trial. A Bath antiques dealer, “Seppy” Hubbard, has disappeared without a trace, and his daughter has hired Getz to find him. When a body is discovered in Seppy’s locked-up store, the missing persons case becomes a murder investigation, and now Diamond has to collaborate with the insufferable private eye.

Incredible twist on the Diamond series
Revisado: 09-05-24
Much of story is told through the voice of a hapless, though devoted private eye named Johnny Getz. He speaks in a 40’s patois straight from the novels featuring Sam Spade, Phillip Marlowe and the like. Peter Diamond fans understand and expect a meddling, inexperienced PI to be chewed up and spit out when Getz muscles his way into Diamond’s investigation. You won’t be disappointed, but you will be surprised.
Therein lies the biggest twist in the Diamond series ever. I found myself cringing whenever Getz interacts with Diamond, expecting a clever, yet inevitable train wreck. I expected the conflicts to lead the story a certain way, but was constantly surprised by Lovesey’s remarkable imagination. Make no mistake, this a remarkable work of art.
I must say James Langton’s narration is excellent. I’ve loved Simon Vance’s readings in the series and found others to be great disappointments. Langston does an excellent job here.
