Historia
They were known as the Mitford sisters: Nancy, Pamela, Diana, Unity, Jessica and Deborah. Born into country-house privilege in the early years of the 20th century, they became prominent as 'bright young things' in the high society of interwar London. Then, as the shadows crept over 1930s Europe, the stark - and very public - differences in their outlooks came to symbolize the political polarities of a dangerous decade.

Mitfords sell themselves
Revisado: 01-11-25
The Mitford Family fascinates. Their dynamics, intrigues, wit, idiocies, vile bigotry, savior complexes and on and on. Laura's book however, leaves much to be desired. Why? Well, simply put she is a poorly concealed Diana. The book is littered with excuses, adorations, misinterpretation, selective amnesia and white washing of Diana, Nazism and Fascism. Conversely, she is scathingly unjust in her treatment of Jessica. Jessica, who has her faults, is Infinitely less malignant, unlike Diana.

Underwhelmed
Revisado: 03-26-24
Definitely in the minority, but my truth is that this book was enormously flat. The hype around the book certainly contributed to the "ridiculously high expectations" trope, yet even without the din, the plot and writing is mediocre at best

By the time I realized the truth about Daniel, it was too late. But the truth about me? He never saw that coming.... Dr. Daniel Ashcroft was perfect: handsome, romantic, protective. I thought I was so lucky. But then I heard the rumors about his previous girlfriend, that she had vanished without a trace. That’s when I found the cameras in my apartment. I was trapped. Daniel made it clear I couldn’t leave him, not without risking everyone I loved. I had to disappear, so I arranged my own kidnapping. I should have known Daniel would never let me get away that easily.

I almost never rate a novel with only one star, but this time it cannot be helped. The plot is ridiculous, every character is annoying with no redeeming qualities. Awfu

A Warning
Revisado: 01-20-24
In the crucible of justice, decency, integrity, and intelligence, there emerges a stark imperative: Donald Trump must face the cold, unyielding embrace of prison. The cacophony of his transgressions reverberates through the hallowed halls of democracy, leaving an indelible stain on the collective consciousness of the nation.
1. Trump's legacy is one of insurrection, a dark symphony of political discourse sullied and cheapened. He has wielded his influence like a blunt instrument, assaulting the very fabric of our society. The seeds of division, hatred, and fear that he has sown among the diverse and hardworking people of this nation threaten the very essence of what makes America great – the myriad acts of small kindness that define us. His litany of lies, cheats, and theft from the nation he vowed to protect is a corruption unparalleled in the annals of American presidential history.
Trump, a bully of the highest order, dismisses, jeers, and insults those beneath him, yet his fragile ego recoils when confronted. His insatiable appetite for power has led him to assault, insult, blackmail, and bribe, leaving a trail of decay in his wake.
2. The man's hypocrisy is laid bare for all to see, a testament to his infantile nature. From puerile name-calling to the absurdity of his tweets, Trump's lack of forethought is on full display. His attacks on President Obama for playing golf pale in comparison to his own golfing escapades. He clamors for personal information disclosure while shielding his own tax returns and academic transcripts from scrutiny. His unrelenting obsession with discrediting others while whining about the lack of acknowledgment for his own purported successes is the epitome of hypocrisy.
3. Trump's life is a carnival of fraud, a testament to his allegiance to the altar of deceit. Tax evasions, Emolument Clause violations, and profiteering from the presidency form the grotesque tableau of his presidency. His disregard for the rule of law and the sanctity of public service is unparalleled.
4. Beyond the political realm, Trump's abuse of women stands as an indelible mark on his character. From E Jean Carroll to the late Ivana Trump, his record of misogynistic behavior is indefensible.
In conclusion, Donald Trump poses a clear and present danger to the very foundations of the Constitution and the ideals upon which America was built. To turn a blind eye to his transgressions is to sign America's death certificate. Trump is devoid of empathy, decency, honor, integrity, and intelligence. His life is a tableau of greed, bigotry, debauchery, ineptitude, and criminality. Like a tyrant descending into an abyss of insanity, he threatens to burn the nation without a moment's hesitation. The imperative is clear – for justice to prevail, for the sanctity of our democracy to be preserved, Donald Trump must find himself behind bars.

Absolutely Sublime
Revisado: 12-24-23
"The world turns on our every action, and our every omission, whether we know it or not." (Abraham Verghese, Cutting for Stone)
"We come unbidden into this life, and if we are lucky we find a purpose beyond starvation, misery, and early death which, lest we forget, is the common lot." (Abraham Verghese, Cutting for Stone)
In the intricate tapestry of Abraham Verghese's "Cutting for Stone," the threads of family, fortitude, love, resilience, discrimination, redemption, and strife are masterfully woven together, creating a narrative that resonates deeply with the reader's soul. Verghese takes the reader (listener in my case) on an epic literary journey, whereby audiences find themselves immersed in a world where the boundaries between the tangible and the intangible blurred, leaving them captivated by the novel's emotional richness.
Verghese's storytelling is a symphony of words, each note carrying the weight of human experience. The familial bonds that tie the characters together are portrayed not merely as blood connections but as the resilient fibers that endure the strains of time. The protagonist's journey, marked by the fragility of love and the profound endurance of the human spirit, unfolding with a poetic melancholy, much like a bittersweet melody echoing through the corridors of memory.
The novel serves as a mirror reflecting the complexities of discrimination, unveiling the harsh realities that shape the characters' lives. Verghese's subtle yet poignant exploration of this theme draws audiences into a solemn contemplation of societal norms and the unyielding nature of prejudice. Discrimination becomes a shadowy specter, casting its long silhouette across the characters' paths, influencing choices and forging destinies with an unforgiving hand.
The theme of redemption, a beacon of hope in the darkest corners of the narrative, is skillfully sewn into the story. Through the characters' struggles and sacrifices, Verghese unveils the transformative power of human tenacity and the capacity for absolution even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. The novel becomes a testament to the human spirit's ability to rise from the ashes, much like a phoenix reborn in the crucible of adversity.
Amidst the beautifully crafted prose, Verghese employs metaphor and simile like delicate brushstrokes, painting vivid imagery that lingers in the reader's mind. The hospital setting becomes a metaphorical stage where life's surgical incisions expose the raw vulnerabilities of the human condition. The characters, like intricate synecdoches, represent larger societal struggles, their individual stories reflecting universal truths.
"Cutting for Stone" is a literary masterpiece that beautifully transcends the boundaries of time and culture, leaving an indelible mark on the reader's heart. Verghese's narrative prowess, coupled with his exploration of profound themes, creates a hauntingly beautiful tale that resonates with the echoes of human experience. As the final pages close, the reader is left with a sense of awe, having traversed a landscape of emotions as vast and intricate as the human soul itself.
