Historia
From one of the most acclaimed and profound writers in the world of comics comes a thrilling and provocative exploration of humankind's great modern myth: the superhero. In this exhilarating work of a lifetime, Grant Morrison draws on art, science, mythology, and his own astonishing journeys through this shadow universe to provide the first true history of the superhero - why they matter, why they will always be with us, and what they tell us about who we are... and what we may yet become.

Memoir about Morrison and his relationship to comics
Revisado: 07-15-24
Fascinating recollection of comics personal to Morrison, an invaluable listen if you’re a fan. Narrator gives a pleasant performance. The only drawback is that the book is, at this point of writing, now over ten years old. And Morrison writes so closely to the pulse of contemporary society that it would be interesting to read his reflections and further insights of the past decade.

Poignant and timely thoughts
Revisado: 07-10-24
I’m a late-in-the-game watcher of the show, and I don’t like to get swept up in things, but this book gets me on the Bill Maher Express back to rational thought. I was reading daily “news” articles that frequently made hair pulling, one-sided critiques and observations of “these dark times.” Well, this book does the opposite while still appealing to that crowd. I’m glad Maher took the time to select his production team’s most timely and relevant editorials so that readers may glean some wisdom from this truly sage advice.

Historia
Edith Hamilton shows us Rome through the eyes of the Romans. Plautus and Terence, Cicero and Caesar, Catullus, Horace, Virgil, and Augustus come to life in their ambitions, their work, their loves and hates. In them we see reflected a picture of Roman life very different from that fixed in our minds through schoolroom days, and far livelier.

The most profound cautionary tale of our time
Revisado: 05-14-24
Another meticulously researched and well thought out book from Edith Hamilton. Nadia May gives an excellent reading that does not tire. The closing statement of this book haunts me. “We are like youth that cannot learn from age.” Indeed, the cry for change made by today’s youth may well have its answer in the past.

Historia
One World Now seamlessly integrates major developments of the past decade into Peter Singer's classic text on the ethics of globalization, One World. Singer, often described as the world's most influential philosopher, here addresses such essential concerns as climate change, economic globalization, foreign aid, human rights, immigration, and the responsibility to protect people from genocide and crimes against humanity, whatever country they may be in. Every issue is considered from an ethical perspective.

Dramatic text read with melodramatic flair
Revisado: 05-06-24
This book seemingly does a poor job of persuading anyone who isn’t already convinced of the author’s viewpoint. This is managed by the author failing to make a decent argument for his obvious stance on climate change. The fills a vast majority of the book’s body with sentences that read like media-ready clickbait disaster headlines. The author gives suggestions to improve existing policies and attitudes that are reactionary and too radical. Those who don’t already think this way will be unlikely to change from their currently thinking to what is proposed in this book. Everything in this book is true, yet the book itself serves as nothing more than confirmation bias for those already on the political left.

Great narration that is easy to understand and not too distracting from the written word, both narrators do an excellent job of painting the picture that the stories depict. The prose is heavily English while also delivering in the straight-forward American style.

Historia
After Jane Austen's earliest known writings, she began a more serious work, Lady Susan, in 1793 or 1794. It is a short, epistolary novel that portrays a woman bent on the exercise of her own powerful mind and personality to the point of social self-destruction.

Hard to judge it too harshly being an unfinished work
Revisado: 04-30-24
Not the most interesting story and the ending somehow feels both abrupt and overly drawn out. I appreciate the opportunity to hear to this story, to see a master not at her best while she smooths out a story. To me the experience was almost like getting a small glimpse into her creative process.

Historia
Hailed as one of the world’s masterpieces of psychological realism, The Death of Ivan Ilyich is the story of a worldly careerist, a high-court judge who has never given the inevitability of his death so much as a passing thought. But one day death announces itself to him, and to his shocked surprise he is brought face-to-face with his own mortality. How, Tolstoy asks, does an unreflective man confront his one and only moment of truth?

Excellent narration of a short but touching story
Revisado: 04-29-24
Though the story and thus the recording are somewhat brief, it is much appreciated that the narrator’s voice is pleasant and familiar. The protagonist’s experience with death is told from an omniscient point of view but does not fail to capture how personal their experience with illness and death is. The few experiences I have of being close to death each came with illnesses of different kinds, but each was both very similar and yet very different from what Tolstoy depicts here.

With the clarity and grace for which she is admired, Edith Hamilton writes of Plato and Aristotle, of Demosthenes and Alexander the Great, of the much-loved playwright Menander, of the Stoics, and finally of Plutarch. She brings these figures vividly to life, not only placing them in relation to their own times but also conveying very poignantly their meaning for our world today.

Based on a thorough study of Greek life and civilization, of Greek literature, philosophy, and art, The Greek Way interprets their meaning and brings a realization of the refuge and strength the past can be to us in the troubled present. Horowitz has narrowed down the 1937 text to its practical strategies and life advice, which is ideal for a quick listen when you need a dose of some profound insight. I like to listen to these Blackstone audios while working out. Listening to this abridged version of Think & Grow improved my mood while I was having a depressive episode.
