Story jumps ahead decades and then years.

I was intrigued by the storyline. The technology described is an applicable for 50 years from now, but not a century from now. I get that the Third World war may have slowed things down. Basic anthropological facts are ignored about a species’ relationship to its planet of origin.

Intriguing topic; painful listen

This is one book I’m sure I would have enjoyed in print more. The names of all the East Asian characters were hard to keep straight with the narrator’s pronunciations and awkward inflections. It was hard to listen to and to follow the story line.

Quality of Recording Lacking

Like the story and the fair recollection of the life and times of a very complicated man. The sound level goes up and down through the first 2/3 of the recording, fluctuating between soft and loud.

Follett at his best

This prequel to The Pillars of the Earth was mesmerizing in it’s detail and it’s drama. Follett helps set the backstory wonderfully.

Loved visiting Tuscany again

The author does a wonderful job of building mystery and intrigue into the story. There is tragedy, resolve and eventually contentment in the novel.

Slightly Disappointing

Not sure why the English translation of this work is called The Long Ships. The title made me think of Vikings traveling to NorthAmerica, but that’s not the story at all. The majority of the book does not take place on ships. There are some parts that causes one to recall the writings of J. R. R. Tolkien with its poems and religious allusions. When I thought in that direction, I enjoyed the book more.

Bizarre Theology but Great Narrator

This wasn’t a bad story, but it had strange underlying theological premises about gifted children and God’s use of guardian soldiers. The narrator was absolutely superb in her believability and varied voices. She kept me listening more than the story did. I will look for Julia Whelan again!

Should be read by every American

Meacham, a presidential scholar and excellent historian, has captured the essence of our American constitution and our struggle to live into it. He gives strong documented evidence that we are, at our basic best, a fair and hopeful people who will not allow ourselves to be consumed by fear and hatred. A must read for Republicans and Democrats.

A Classic Piece of Literature

I always love George Guidall’s narration. Absolutely one the best. The new translation is easy to understand and the translator explanation at the end was very interesting. One can see how this work influenced so many others, from Lord of the Rings to Game of Thrones.

Reader was a bit melodramatic for me

The reader often got in the way of an interesting story. He often overemphasized parts that need not have been and at other times, read some very intense parts without any emphasis at all. It was distracting and unnecessary.
