Ten regional or country-focused vignettes
Revisado: 04-21-23
This is guaranteed to teach you things you didn't know or fully appreciate about the ten countries/regions he wrote about. It puts each in an interesting and sweeping historical, geopolitical perspective and context. And Mr. Marshall does a very good job with his own material (sounds a bit like Mehdi Hasan)

Historia
In this exquisitely written book, Robert Macfarlane sets off from his Cambridge, England, home to follow the ancient tracks, holloways, drove roads, and sea paths that crisscross both the British landscape and its waters and territories beyond. The result is an immersive, enthralling exploration of the ghosts and voices that haunt old paths, of the stories our tracks keep and tell, and of pilgrimage and ritual. Told in Macfarlane’s distinctive voice, The Old Ways folds together natural history, cartography, geology, archaeology, and literature.

One of the best travel books I've ever 'read'
Revisado: 04-21-23
I've listened to chapters of this audiobook over and over. He so perfectly evokes these places I feel like I'm walking along with him. It's a reflection on time, on being a mortal human, on understanding our place on this planet. It's just beautiful prose. And the reading by Mr. Sachs is just perfect. I've recommended it over and over to fellow travelers.

Our world has ended five times: It has been broiled, frozen, poison gassed, smothered, and pelted by asteroids. In The Ends of the World, Peter Brannen dives into deep time, exploring Earth's past dead ends, and in the process offers us a glimpse of our possible future. Many scientists now believe that the climate shifts of the 21st century have analogs in these five extinctions.

Earth's geologic history brought to life
Revisado: 11-19-21
A grand tour of the mass extinction events brought to life, as you visit the places now where the evidence lives. Really enjoyable for amateur geologists or fossil hunters. Helps you to put perspective into the mass extinction events because it helps you visualize them. I took my time through this one.

A good primer for those new to the subject
Revisado: 11-19-21
Pretty comprehensive view of the issues and state of the subject, so it's a good primer. But, if you've been paying attention to the topic, you won't find anything new here. It's just the basics.

Historia
When we think of fungi, we likely think of mushrooms. But mushrooms are only fruiting bodies, analogous to apples on a tree. Most fungi live out of sight, yet make up a massively diverse kingdom of organisms that supports and sustains nearly all living systems. Fungi provide a key to understanding the planet on which we live, and the ways we think, feel, and behave.

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

Historia
Every leader must be ready and willing to take charge, to make hard, crucial calls for the good of the team and the mission. Something much more difficult to understand is that in order to be a good leader, one must also be a good follower. This is a dichotomy - a Dichotomy of Leadership. It is, as authors Jocko Willink and Leif Babin explained in their best-selling first audiobook, Extreme Ownership, “Simple, Not Easy”.

Historia
It's the American dream: get a good education, work hard, buy a house, and achieve prosperity and success. This is the America we believe in - a nation of opportunity, constrained only by ability and effort. But during the last 25 years we have seen a disturbing "opportunity gap" emerge. Americans have always believed in equality of opportunity, the idea that all kids, regardless of their family background, should have a decent chance to improve their lot in life.

Historia
In 40 years, Earth's population will reach 10 billion. Can our world support that? What kind of world will it be? Those answering these questions generally fall into two deeply divided groups - Wizards and Prophets, as Charles Mann calls them in this balanced, authoritative, nonpolemical new book. The Prophets, he explains, follow William Vogt, a founding environmentalist who believed that in using more than our planet has to give, our prosperity will lead us to ruin.

Excellent philosophical approach to modernity
Revisado: 08-19-18
Through the stories of two pivotal individuals, it gives you a blueprint for see the modern world through competing world views and what the future holds: techno-optimism versus you-can't-fool-Mother-Nature. The frames of reference the book leaves you with are even better than the book itself. I keep coming back again and again to the ideas of technological “wizard” thinking (technoptimists) versus “prophet” thinking (skeptics).
