Historia
"You can never go home again," the saying goes—but Hal, Athena, and Erin have to. In high school, the three were students of the eccentric Professor Marsh, trained in a secret system of magic known as the Dissonance, which is built around harnessing negative emotions: alienation, anger, pain. Then, twenty years ago, something happened that shattered their coven, scattering them across the country, stuck in mundane lives, alone. But now, terrifying signs and portents (not to mention a pointed Facebook invite) have summoned them back to Clegg, Texas.

The Dissonance - An amazing new urban fantasy horror novel that grabs your heart and doesn’t let go.
Revisado: 11-24-24
This is, by far, one of the best Urban Fantasy/Dark Academia-esque novels I’ve had the pleasure of reading to date. It takes some of my favorite parts of things like “The Magicians” or “The Scholomance” and twists, expands, and makes them feel new, refreshing, and exciting. It also maintains that dark, scary, brutally really appeal of Hamill’s other works. There’s a sense of “nostalgic ennui” that comes from this story that really mimicked that feeling you get as you start to really grow up (saying hello to your 30’s). It leaves a pit of dread and heartache at the stories core that its characters and their friendship somehow twist to make you feel not only okay, but that everything will BE okay. Easily a 5 star read. One of the best books I’ve read in recent memory. I CANNOT wait to see what else Hamill does in the future. Read this book!!

All the feels, spooky, tense, and warm?
Revisado: 07-02-24
This book, just like the first, blew me out of the water. It’s everything I wanted from a sequel, and I couldn’t be happier.

Historia
Following the events in Network Effect, the Barish-Estranza corporation has sent rescue ships to a newly colonized planet in peril, as well as additional SecUnits. But if there's an ethical corporation out there, Murderbot has yet to find it, and if Barish-Estranza can't have the planet, they're sure as hell not leaving without something. If that something just happens to be an entire colony of humans, well, a free workforce is a decent runner-up prize. But there's something wrong with Murderbot; it isn't running within normal operational parameters.

Historia
After barely making it out of the Kettle Springs cornfields alive, Quinn’s first year away at college should be safe and easy. All she wants is to be normal again. But instead, Quinn finds that her past won’t leave her alone when she becomes the focus of online conspiracy theories that claim the Kettle Springs Massacre never happened. It’s a deranged but relentless fantasy, and there’s nothing Quinn can do to get people to hear the truth—not even on her own campus or in her own dorm room.

Of Course Friendo Lives
Revisado: 09-12-23
Adam Cesare took everything that worked for the first “Clown in a Cornfield” and dialed it up to 11. I don’t usually get too scared with horror books but this was an anxiety-ridden thrill ride that took all the things that I find truly scary in this world and gave them the stage. There’s nothing scarier to me than crazy conspiracy theory people from the internet, and when you throw a clown mask onto that, it opens the door for some pretty scary shit. Quinn is STILL a baddie, and I would happily let her take the final girl reigns any day.

Historia
Quinn Maybrook and her father have moved to tiny, boring Kettle Springs, to find a fresh start. But what they don’t know is that ever since the Baypen Corn Syrup Factory shut down, Kettle Springs has cracked in half. On one side are the adults, who are desperate to make Kettle Springs great again, and on the other are the kids, who want to have fun, make prank videos, and get out of Kettle Springs as quick as they can.

Honestly this book has been on my radar for years at this point, and I figured it’s getting to be spooky season so why not finally give it a shot… Boy am I glad I did! This was a thrill ride from start to finish. I’m kicking myself for waiting so long. Do yourself a favor and read this!

I could read/listen to Imperial Radch Universe stories for the rest of my life I think. Leckie’s writing and her characters will never cease to captivate me. 5/5 will read again.

This is why I love “This is Why They Hate Us”
Revisado: 06-15-23
Honestly I can’t remember the last time I read a book that made me feel as seen as “This is Why They Hate Us” managed to. As a Queer, LatinX man, Quique’s struggles with his mental health and his identity struck a cord in me that I have been searching for in my literature for years. Knowing that this is a debut novel, I’m very excited to see what Aceves does in the future to make me happy/sad cry like this did.

Jade Daniels is real horror icon
Revisado: 02-16-23
"Don't Fear the Reaper" managed to masterfully use the near perfection that was "My Heart is a Chainsaw" as a springboard launching itself into something that felt simultaneously familiar and breathtakingly refreshing. The new horror Queens (Jade and Letha) as well as the rest of the new and returning cast gave this story a heart and soul that had me as desperate for their survival as they were. I cannot wait to see where their story goes from here, and I'm still, and always going to be, a SGJ fanboy.
