In Washington: A Life celebrated biographer Ron Chernow provides a richly nuanced portrait of the father of our nation. This crisply paced narrative carries the reader through his troubled boyhood, his precocious feats in the French and Indian War, his creation of Mount Vernon, his heroic exploits with the Continental Army, his presiding over the Constitutional Convention, and his magnificent performance as America's first president.

Really humanizes Washington
Revisado: 09-01-24
This book is both thorough and enlightening. As someone who has grown up in the United States, I am obviously very aware of who George Washington is. However, the myths about this man that you learn as a child seem to be not about a person who is human. This book does a really good job in thoroughly laying out of life in whole, which includes his frailties desires and struggles as he strives to become a legend.

Historia
Growing up in one of the meanest counties in the Jim Crow South, Carter is the only American president who essentially lived in three centuries: his early life on the farm in the 1920s without electricity or running water might as well have been in the nineteenth; his presidency put him at the center of major events in the twentieth; and his efforts on conflict resolution and global health set him on the cutting edge of the challenges of the 21st.

Comprehensive and informative
Revisado: 12-28-23
I was born right after Carter‘s presidency ended, so I did not know very much about the details of it or honestly the man who became president. All I really knew about was the guy afterwards all around the world doing good. What this book really illuminates to me, is how many things in our world today or influenced ultimately for the better by Carter’s presidency. Though he did not get to enjoy many of those policy changes the next 40 years of American history would not have played out how it did for better or worse, without the hard decisions that he made. If you like presidential biographies, this one is definitely worth the read.

The best one-volume biography of Madison’s life, Ketcham’s biography not only traces Madison’s career, it gives listeners a sense of the man. As Madison said of his early years in Virginia under the study of Donald Robertson, who introduced him to thinkers like Montaigne and Montesquieu, "all that I have been in life I owe largely to that man." It also captures a side of Madison that is less rarely on display.

Interesting, in-depth and informative
Revisado: 09-07-23
The content of this book was interesting, in-depth and quite informative. It on passionately gets into the details of James Madison’s life without preaching any kind of narrative other than to just give you the unbelievably long list and specifics of the many things he did. It’s definitely not, an always engrossing read because of this.
The real short coming in this audiobook is the performance of the narrator. To say it is subpar is generous. There are multiple instances where the narrator starts reading a passage, messes up and then restarts. It makes you wonder whether anyone edited or reviewed it before it was released because repeated starts and stops, especially in the chapter where we first come across Dolly Madison make it sound rather amateurish.

Historia
When James K. Polk was elected president in 1844, the United States was locked in a bitter diplomatic struggle with Britain over the rich lands of the Oregon Territory, which included what is now Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Texas, not yet part of the Union, was threatened by a more powerful Mexico. And the territories north and west of Texas---what would become California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and part of Colorado---belonged to Mexico.

Informative, but does not flow
Revisado: 05-15-23
Honestly, had very little idea about the remarkable amount James Paul got done in four years of a presidency. Learning about that, and the ways in which he maneuvered to make it happen was extremely interesting. However, there was a ton of repetition and certain chapters seemed to come before other chapters, and basically it just didn’t flow well chronologically. The performance was meh but overall if you’re interested in our lesser known presidents this title is worth checking out - especially when it’s available to read/listen to for free.

Historia
Despite his promising start as a young man, by his early 50s Chester A. Arthur was known as the crooked crony of New York machine boss Roscoe Conkling. For years Arthur had been perceived as unfit to govern, not only by critics and the vast majority of his fellow citizens but by his own conscience. As President James A. Garfield struggled for his life, Arthur knew better than his detractors that he failed to meet the high standard a president must uphold. And yet, from the moment President Arthur took office, he proved to be not just honest but brave.

Interesting information but…
Revisado: 04-15-23
Definitely very enlightening in a very interesting read, however, it seems at times like the author is trying to just fill pages. There is way too much on the background of for example Ulysses S Grant than is needed in a book on Chester a Arthur. additionally, I really felt like it gives a rather lazy account of reconstruction and the way the American public felt about Grant despite the corruption that was in his administration. In a book about a very corrupt political operative, Arthur, it’s odd that they insinuate the Grant was the same when in fact, Grant was never linked to anything.

Historia
Here, in his own words, is the true story of America's wildest flying hero, of his extraordinary heroism, and of his greatest battle of all-the fight to survive. The World War II air war in the Pacific needed tough men like Colonel Pappy Boyington and his Black Sheep Squadron. The legendary Marine Corps officer and his bunch of misfits, outcasts, and daredevils gave a new definition to "hell-raising" - on the ground and in the skies.

Historia
In March 1941 Jimmy Stewart, America's boy next door and recent Academy Award winner, left fame and fortune behind and joined the United States Army Air Corps to fulfill his family mission and serve his country. He rose from private to colonel and participated in 20 often-brutal World War II combat missions over Germany and France. In mere months the war took away his boyish looks as he faced near-death experiences and the loss of men under his command. The war finally won, he returned home with millions of other veterans to face an uncertain future.

Interesting, but definitely some shortcomings
Revisado: 02-26-23
The story this tells about Jimmy Stewart’s service in the second world war is very interesting. However, the author writes in a manner that is a little hero worshipping when frankly, the actual story, instead of rehashing, irrelevant details of a Hollywood career to come, or that has gone before to try to fill page space in the middle of battle sequences. Further, the performer of this book mispronounces quite a number of words. I mean there’s a difference between the color orange and the royal house of Orange for example, that you would expect the performer had figured out before recording this book. In this case, they had not, so there are pronunciation errors that abound.

I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

A major new biography of the Civil War general and American president, by the author of the New York Times bestseller A. Lincoln. The dramatic story of one of America's greatest and most misunderstood military leaders and presidents, this is a major new interpretation of Ulysses S. Grant. Based on seven years of research with primary documents, some of them never tapped before, this is destined to become the Grant biography of our times.

Pretty good but
Revisado: 01-09-23
It’s pretty good, but having also listened to Chernow’s grant biography, I feel like this one is not quite as good. Where it does stand out, is in the way that it organizes certain aspects of his life into groupings. But, it’s not as thorough as the Chernow one so if you’re going to read one, I would recommend that one. Do listen to this one second because Grant was a truly interesting man whose story has much to teach us.
