He needs a new will, however, because he has just been secretly married to a woman whom his family would never approve. Spooky!
Revisado: 05-17-20
This story just happens to take place in a time where the Spanish Flu was raging. How spooky! The parallels to today's crisis are quite unbelievable, I think those details were even more riveting to me than the main story line! Great book. Thanks, Ms Thompson!

Jumbled
Revisado: 10-19-19
Interesting book, but there was something about the structure that made it hard to follow.
It interlaced the history of NecroSearch, some high profile cases, and the personal history of some team members – to me, it just felt jumbled.

Turning in Circles
Revisado: 09-20-19
It was an interesting story, I liked it well enough, but you REALLY have to suspend your disbelief if you want to enjoy it.
Without spoiling it too much: She wants to get away, but goes along with him because he has some damning information that might ruin her life…. so she doesn’t really want to get away…. but yet she plots her get-away.
I also figured out who the bad-guy was pretty early on, so the Big Reveal fell flat.

Historia
In April 2002, Janine Latus' youngest sister, Amy, wrote a note and taped it to the inside of her desk drawer. "Today Ron Ball and I are romantically involved", it read, "but I fear I have placed myself at risk in a variety of ways. Based on his criminal past, writing this out just seems like the smart thing to do. If I am missing or dead this obviously has not protected me...."

What a tragic life
Revisado: 09-15-19
First thing’s first: this is not a story about Amy’s murder – all that takes place near the end of the book.
This a memoir of an abused woman who’s sister just happened to be murdered and I found it all very interesting; not least because it was a good lesson for me not to be so judgemental.
Her life feels like a train wreck; how (better yet, WHY) does she find and settle for so many losers! But just as I was criticizing her again for the umpteenth time, I realised that compassion for her plight might be a better approach to reading her story. It’s never just about “a bad relationship” but all your life experiences that lead you to it. The scene where she’s at her boyfriend’s place for a Thanksgiving dinner that goes downhill fast is such cautionary tale on many many levels!
She ends the book with a plea for women who recognize themselves in these pages to seek help. Although it was tragic, I felt the effort to share and help others by telling her story was poignant.

Historia
When Eden was 10 years old she found her father, David, bleeding on the bathroom floor. The suicide attempt led to her parents’ divorce, and David all but vanished from Eden’s life. Twenty years later, Eden runs a successful catering company and dreams of opening a restaurant. Since childhood, she has heard from her father only rarely, just enough to know that he’s been living on the streets and struggling with mental illness.

The bad outweighed the good.
Revisado: 09-15-19
The story line from David’s POV was great. The rest was garbage. I hated it. Another reviewer was more eloquent in her review and said: “she handles the characters of David and young Eden with beauty and grace. The treatment of present day Eden, however, feels like it belongs in a completely different book of lesser quality.” That is bang on!
While David’s then-storyline was poignant, Eden’s now-storyline feels like Young Adult Fiction. To me, it felt written by a teenager who imagines what grown-ups must be like. ESPECIALLY the conversation between the two prostitutes on the benefits of removable teeth. What a farce! AS IF!
The entire book is all about her efforts to find her long lost father, so when near the end she declares she will give up if this “one last thing” it doesn’t work it’s so OBVIOUS that she will now definitely find him; far from a red herring, it’s a dead give-away.
To be fair, I don’t appreciate books that go on and on about romance and recipes, so I would never have appreciated those parts.
Overall, the bad parts outweighed the good parts and I was disappointed.

Lauren, a new mother, is exhausted by the demands of her twin boys. Since coming home from the hospital, she rarely leaves the house. But it isn't only new motherhood keeping her there. Lauren knows someone is watching them and someone wants her babies. It started with an incident at the hospital and an emergency call in the middle of the night. No one believes her - not her husband, not the police - until one day in the park when everything changes. Is Lauren mad, or does she know something no one else does?

It really kept me guessing
Revisado: 09-09-19
Was Lauren truly mad? Or was she the only sane character who could see something no one else could?
I put this book in my “sci-fi / paranormal / fantasy” category because I really didn’t know up until the very end in what direction the story was going.
A great page turner!

Historia
For eight weeks in 1945, as Berlin fell to the Russian army, a young woman kept a daily record of life in her apartment building and among its residents. The anonymous author depicts her fellow Berliners in all their humanity, as well as their cravenness, corrupted first by hunger and then by the Russians. A Woman in Berlin tells of the complex World War II relationship between civilians and an occupying army and the shameful indignities to which women in a conquered city are always subject—the mass rape suffered by all, regardless of age or infirmity.

Fascinating
Revisado: 09-05-19
What so impressed me about this book was the diary itself. I’m amazed.
When I kept a diary, it was a few disjointed sentences with no context or explanation – this woman wrote novellas with each entry! Just the time that must have taken blows me away.
The content is fascinating of course, well worth the read.

Propelled by a wish to reclaim the brilliant, chaotic, endlessly varied German civilization that the Nazis buried and ruined, and that so many Germans have worked to rebuild, Germania was recorded to enlighten us on serious topics, curiosities, and on the limits of language, the meaning of culture, and the pleasure of townscape.

I am having a love-hate relationship with this book.
I love the droll, witty, almost sarcastic tone of the book; it’s fantastic!… but the narration is on and off. Yes a dry English narrator is a perfect fit, but he pauses in weird places and sometimes all sentences feel like declarations.
I love all the touristy leads I am getting for my next trip to Germany… but there are so many and I am not retaining ANYTHING
ARGH! I think this is one of those books one must re-read multiple times to truly absorb.

Historia
From the New York Times best-selling author of The Expats. Kate Moore is back in a pulse-pounding thriller to discover that a massive terror attack across Paris is not what it seems - and that it involves her family. On the nearby rue de Rivoli, Mahmoud Khalid climbs out of an electrician’s van and elbows his way into the crowded courtyard of the world’s largest museum. He sets down his metal briefcase, and removes his windbreaker. That’s when people start to scream.

Not for me
Revisado: 08-20-19
Despite the fact that I finished it, I didn’t enjoy this book at all.
The more I read, the less I enjoyed it; the style just wasn’t for me. At first I wondered if it was because I completely forgot everything about Book 1, but after a while I just didn’t care either way. There wasn’t enough overall to excite me.
I found that there was WAY too much slogging through the characters thoughts as the events unfolded which slowed the pace to a crawl.
I did like the setting in Paris – that was redeeming!
If there are more books in the series, I’ll pass.

Loved it!
Revisado: 08-18-19
Another “unreliable narrator” gripping psychological page-turner.
I found this book particularly captivating because I was never sure what would happen next and guessing the truth as I went along was a lot of fun!
The twists and turns had me hooked and while I did eventually guess the ending, figuring it out in advance didn’t ruin the experience.
