Historia
Horace Manning, scientist, recluse and 'closed book' even to his friends, is found dead in his study at 4a.m., following a dinner in honour of his daughter's engagement. An ivory-handled carving knife rests between his shoulder blades as the houseguests gather round to witness the awful crime. The telephone line has been sabotaged - a calculated murder has been committed. Rewinding twelve hours, the events of the afternoon and evening unfold, revealing a multitude of clues and motives from a closed cast of suspects.

What a great story!

Excellent narration. Even though I figured out part of the ending ahead of time, it didn’t spoil it. Very compelling characters. Highly recommend.

The prize-winning and best-selling author of Say Nothing presents a grand, devastating portrait of three generations of the Sackler family, famed for their philanthropy, whose fortune was built by Valium and whose reputation was destroyed by OxyContin. Empire of Pain is a masterpiece of narrative reporting and writing, exhaustively documented and ferociously compelling.

Good classic, atmospheric mystery
Revisado: 11-29-21
I enjoyed this story. Very well written and narrated. All the voices were distinctly differentiated. The mystery wasn’t too hard to figure out but the atmosphere and descriptions of the landscape and people were very absorbing. Recommended.

Historia
With dramatic flair, Jeff Guinn delivers the definitive portrait of Bonnie and Clyde. These media-savvy outlaws appealed to America's Depression-era hunger for swashbuckling characters. Glowing radio and newspaper reports transformed these "public enemies" into celebrities - much like the cinema gangsters of the time.

Detailed But Very Grim
Revisado: 04-15-21
This book is interesting but extremely grim. It is incredibly detailed and well-researched but hard to listen to because of the harsh and brutal situations depicted. It is very sad and doesn’t romanticize Clyde and Bonnie. The narrator is fine and the stories of the Parker & Barrow families are very fully covered. There is no suspense. The story ends as badly as possible and as everyone expected, even at the time.

Historia
Great Contemporaries profiles towering figures ranging from Franklin Roosevelt, Adolf Hitler, Lawrence of Arabia and Leon Trotsky to Charlie Chaplin, H. G. Wells, Rudyard Kipling and George Bernard Shaw. Written in the decade before Churchill became prime minister, the essays in Great Contemporaries focus on the challenges of statecraft at a time when the democratic revolution was toppling older regimes based on tradition and aristocratic privilege.

Somewhat dated but interesting
Revisado: 07-27-18
Many of Churchill’s “great contemporaries” are not very well remembered today but nevertheless the profiles here are absorbing. Churchill has a florid style and the narrator gives it its full value. Many political scores are settled, but Churchill shows respect even for those he doesn’t like. All the profiles were written in the 1930’s, so the constant references to “the war” refer to World War I. A familiarity with late 19th century English political history helps a listener to follow these accounts.

Historia
In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

Great Book
Revisado: 06-20-18
This is a very interesting and important book, well written and very well narrated. I was only vaguely familiar with the Theranos story before listening. Elizabeth Holmes is a stunning example of hubris and her boyfriend Sunny Balwani comes across as a bully and rageaholic. Several famous men also fare very poorly in this narrative, including George Shultz, James Mattis, and David Boise. Highly recommended.

Bill Nighy and Suzanne Burden are fabulous as always as Charles and Frances. Another smashing time with the whole crew. The different rings on Charles’ phone alone are worth the credit.

Historia
A coming-of-age tale for the young and naïve 17-year-old Catherine Morland, Northanger Abbey takes a decidedly comical look at themes of class, family, love and literature. Revelling in the sensationalist - and extremely popular - Gothic fiction of her day, the story follows Catherine out of Bath to the lofty manor of the Tilneys, where her overactive imagination gets to work constructing an absurd and melodramatic explanation for the death of Mrs Tilney, which threatens to jeopardise her newly forged friendships.

This is a faithful dramatization of the novel--well-acted and funny. Henry Tilney is my favorite Jane Austen hero. And, Elizabeth Thompson is a great narrator/voice of Jane Austen in this production. Well done, Audible!

Good mystery but dated language.
Revisado: 12-30-16
I like most of MM Kaye's books and this one has a good mystery with lots of suspects and red herrings. For me, the book was marred by racial and ethnic slurs and negative stereotypes of Africans. I know the book dates from the mid-1950s but this language is jarring -- so be prepared. The narrator was very good.

Great Narration
Revisado: 12-26-16
The story is overlong and the mystery isn't very hard to solve, but the narrator is very good. It makes the story and characters interesting even when the plot seems padded.
