Historia
Glen Runciter runs a lucrative business - deploying his teams of anti-psychics to corporate clients who want privacy and security from psychic spies. But when he and his top team are ambushed by a rival, he is gravely injured and placed in "half-life," a dreamlike state of suspended animation. Soon, though, the surviving members of the team begin experiencing some strange phenomena, such as Runciter's face appearing on coins and the world seeming to move backward in time.

Influential but Not Great
Revisado: 11-07-24
This is a unique work that is clearly very significant to the genre. For those familiar with more modern Sci-fi, you can see how many of those works are influenced by Ubik. In fact, I would argue that "New Who" should just include this book in its credits.
That said, if is genuinely wierd. I found it enjoyable once it takes off. But it almost felt like Mr. Dick didn't know where/how to end it.
But this is just one man's review.

Gondolin, beautiful but undiscoverable, is central to the enmity of two of the greatest powers in the world. Morgoth of the uttermost evil seeks in vain to discover the marvellously hidden city of his Elven enemies, while the gods in Valinor refuse to support Ulmo Lord of Waters' designs to protect it. Into this world comes Tuor, cousin of Túrin, and guided unseen by Ulmo he sets out on the fearful journey to Gondolin to warn them of their coming doom.

Historia
Generally considered to be his masterpiece, Vanity Fair is Thackeray's resplendent social satire that exposes the greed and corruption raging in England during the turmoil of the Napoleonic wars. Subtitled "A Novel Without a Hero", it traces the changing fortunes of two unforgettable women: the scheming opportunist Becky Sharp, one of literature's most resourceful, engaging, and amoral heroines, and her foil, the faithful, naive Amelia Sedley.

A Wonderful Looping Story
Revisado: 05-01-24
I enjoyed this title so much that it makes me feel guilty for having ignored for so long. It is like a Victorian novel is being related by Luis from the Ant-man movies. You get involved in the stories of each of the mains. A Victorian story cycle of sorts. As a satirical look at the society of the era, this is far better than the Edwardian novel "Room with a View." Which, notwithstanding it being from a different period, just doesn't engage you half as much.
I normally find this narrator obnoxious, but he is perfectly suited to this piece and makes it that much richer.

Science fiction has been called the "literature of ideas", and it often explores the potential consequences of scientific, social, and technological innovations. Besides providing entertainment, it can also criticize present-day society and explore alternatives. Including short stories by Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Philip K. Dick, Kurt Vonnegut, E.M. Forster, Robert Louis Stevenson, Arthur Machen, Arthur Conan Doyle, Edwin A. Abbott, Jules Verne, and H. G. Wells.

Good Stories Bad Overall
Revisado: 03-27-24
This was a collection of some truely great works in the genre, some are even said to help define it. However, this collection has such a vast span of quality of narration that some good stories were elevated and some greats were made almost unlistenable. Combine that with not having a true table of contents to help you find specific stories and it makes for a bad overall collection comprised of otherwise good stories. A paradox I could live without.

In this rich new audio production, acclaimed British American actress Rebecca Hall brings one of E. M. Forster's most admired works to life in this classic tale of human struggle. A charming young Englishwoman, Lucy Honeychurch, is wooed by both free-spirited George Emerson and wealthy Cecil Vyse while vacationing in Italy. Though attracted to George, Lucy becomes engaged to Cecil despite twice turning down his proposals. On hearing of the news, George confesses his love, leaving Lucy torn between marrying the more socially acceptable Cecil or George, the man she knows would bring her true happiness. Should Lucy choose social acceptance or true love?

It Takes a Minute
Revisado: 03-22-24
Overall this is a fine book, not a great book. It's satirical take on society of the time is almost too firmly established. I found myself wanting to shout, "get on with it" on a few occasions. At about the 2/3 point, it finally starts to pick up and get interesting. All this aside, there are some solid quotes that could be pulled from it, though not enough to land this book a spot in my favorites.

Beren was a mortal man, but Lúthien was an immortal Elf. Her father, a great Elvish lord, was deeply opposed to Beren, and imposed on him an impossible task that he must perform before he might wed Lúthien. Undaunted by Lord Thingol’s challenge, Beren and Lúthien embark on the supremely heroic attempt to rob Morgoth, the greatest of all evil beings, of a Silmaril, one of the hallowed jewels that adorn the Black Enemy’s crown.

Not for the Casual Ringer
Revisado: 03-20-24
I thoroughly enjoyed this audio version. Though, I have read it in print before, the reading here makes the poetry seem more pronounced. In any case, this shows the evolution of the story more than it just gives it. Fascinating for hard core Tolkien fans, but it my be a bit much for Lord of the Rings fans that haven't made it through The Silmarillion yet.

Lots of Dialog
Revisado: 03-04-24
This is a fine book. Though, it should be stated that the movie is such a faithful adaptation that even with this first listen of the book, I was able to feel like I was revisiting the story. That said, the narration was solid enough to make it feel like a qualityvaudio drama.
My one big criticism is that the book lacks a lot of description. In a book with so much dialog, some hints on the attitude of the person speaking would have been nice. That did leave substantial room for interpretation on the part of the narrator, though.

Combined into one volume, this is the definitive collection of Tolkien's five acclaimed modern classic 'fairie' tales in the vein of The Hobbit, read by Derek Jacobi. The five tales are written with the same skill, quality and charm that made The Hobbit a classic. Largely overlooked because of their short lengths, they are joined here in one volume which reaffirms Tolkien's place as a master storyteller for listeners young and old.

Dante's Divine Comedy is considered to be not only the most important epic poem in Italian literature, but also one of the greatest poems ever written. It consists of 100 cantos, and (after an introductory canto) they are divided into three sections. Each section is 33 cantos in length, and they describe how Dante and a guide travel through Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso.

A Good Translation
Revisado: 12-15-23
I am always reluctant to try a different translation of a work once I have settled on a favorite. Some translators are too literal, some are to ready to throw out context in favor of a more modern feel, but this one is a nice balance. The narrator's voice carries sufficient gravitas for this piece as well.

Historia
From the moment of its publication in 1748, The Spirit of the Laws proved to be a controversial work provoking widespread interest. Within three years it had been translated into various European languages - and was swiftly added to the List of Prohibited Books by the Roman Catholic Church. It is a remarkable book, a potpourri of observations and comments ranging far and wide over the social activities of mankind and it exerted a great influence on political leaders in the following decades.

A Significant Piece of Political Philosophy
Revisado: 12-15-23
I came into this audio book already familiar with the work. This translation is a considerably more modern one compared to my copy from 1901. But, that certainly made it more digestible as it is a very dense book with lots to unpack. There are moments where you can get a legitimate look into the politicl mindset that led to the writing of the US Constitution.
The narration is solid, though the amount of accent given to some of the names almost feels exaggerated.
