This is among the best books I’ve listened to in intellectual history. Unlike many book with philosophical, the book was easy to listen to. The ideas were conveyed elegantly and with exceeding clarity. Among my favorite works in this set of genres.

This book was a horrifying collection of unsubstantiated claims, and it really pushes the reader to accept as “philosophical” mere speculative musings without coherence. I did find the references to Marx revealing.

After reading this book about a decade ago, I went through it again via Audible. I am just as amazed at the detail and content included this time as I was the first time. The telling of the story is on a par with some of the better storytelling one finds in fiction. I definitely recommend this to those seriously interested in history, whether we’ll traveled through the annals of history or a newcomer trying to gain some traction on ancient and Eastern history.

Specific to the Audible edition, I found it incredible that interviews of Ariel and Will Durant were incorporated into the book. They interviews focused on clarificatory questions related to each chapter, and the sound bites were included at the end of each chapter. The audio of the interviews was not always good, but it was mostly intelligible.

The book itself remains one of the most insightful books I have read. It provides big-picture takeaways from their 11-volume “The Story of Civilization.” Among these takeaways are such ideas as “freedom” and “order” creating an essential tension throughout history. The overarching objective of the Durants’ project is to understand humanity philosophically by looking at history —a marvelous and unique approach.
