Historia
Soul Machine takes us back to the origins of modernity, a time when a crisis in religious authority and the scientific revolution led to searching questions about the nature of human inner life. This is the story of how a new concept - the mind - emerged as a potential solution, one that was part soul and part machine but fully neither.

Not a reasonable ending
Revisado: 10-09-24
A lot of great history and a good blending of science medicine, history and religion. But I can’t for the life of me understand how he never really ended up with the second word of the book title, machine? How could he not end with the fact that the mind is entirely the phenomenon of the organic evolved brain and not end the book talking about Cahal and neuron theory at the end of the 19th century? He seemed just too satisfied to finish it in a nebulous summary of “mind”. So he did not quite get to the machine. Mind is merely the perceived emergent phenomenon of neurons and their trillions of connections, and it’s embodied connection with hormones, neurotransmitters and the entire body chemistry.
But great history I do recommend the book

Historia
Robert Sapolsky’s Behave, his now classic account of why humans do good and why they do bad, pointed toward an unsettling conclusion: We may not grasp the precise marriage of nature and nurture that creates the physics and chemistry at the base of human behavior, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Now, in Determined, Sapolsky takes his argument all the way, mounting a brilliant (and in his inimitable way, delightful) full-frontal assault on the pleasant fantasy that there is some separate self telling our biology what to do.

One of my favorite authors
Revisado: 11-13-23
I was convinced of the reality of no free will prior to reading, but this still challenged me. I think maintaining a light structure of practical free will thinking, is helpful, while still being honest with the deep reality that it’s turtles all the Way down. For me understanding that we have no free will helps me greatly in my compassion toward others and for the song appreciate it. It’s just refreshing but sometimes scary to know the real science behind it.

This was a very good book that I think is one of the best overviews of brain mapping. You don’t come across a good science book that is narrated well by the author, but this hits a home run.

We are stuck, stymied, frustrated. But it needn't be this way. There is a formula for success that's been followed by the icons of history - from John D. Rockefeller to Amelia Earhart to Ulysses S. Grant to Steve Jobs - a formula that let them turn obstacles into opportunities. Faced with impossible situations, they found the astounding triumphs we all seek.

Excellent usable philosophy, but I have a curious question about the narration.
Revisado: 01-25-23
Great stuff, and I am convinced it is usable if I use it. But I’m trying to get an answer on this. So he does great narration on his own book, so how could he so clearly and incorrectly pronounce several significant words in the text? I can always easily understand if the narrator is not the author, but in this case, I’m just really confused, especially for such a learned and scholarly individual. It wasn’t often, but it happened several times, just enough to startle me. And it left me wondering, “surely he would know how to pronounce that”

Historia
According to the prevailing scientific paradigm, the universe tends toward randomness; it functions according to laws without purpose, and life is an accident devoid of meaning. Thanks to a new understanding of evolution, as well as recent advances in our understanding of the phenomenon known as emergence, a new cosmic narrative is taking shape: Nature’s simplest “parts” come together to form ever-greater “wholes” in a process that has no end in sight. Bobby Azarian explains the science behind this new view of reality and explores what it means for all of us.

We just cannot bear being unimportant.
Revisado: 08-02-22
I’m reminded of a saying, “you have to be really smart to be that wrong.” So are all the trillions of planets that do not contain life, evidence that life is not important to the universe? It’s the same wrong question that this book asks. I really tried to keep reading this but just couldn’t after he showed his hand. Makes me proud of the scientists who will stand up to the cold bracing wind of reality and honestly say, “no, life is not significant from the perspective of the universe, only from our perspective.” Just because the conditions of this planet were ripe for life to quickly arise, does not mean the universe was just giddy with excitement waiting for us. Teleology and religion are so seductive, they will even bed atheist scientists.

Historia
In The War on the West, Douglas Murray shows how many well-meaning people have been fooled by hypocritical and inconsistent anti-West rhetoric. After all, if we must discard the ideas of Kant, Hume, and Mill for their opinions on race, shouldn’t we discard Marx, whose work is peppered with racial slurs and anti-Semitism? Embers of racism remain to be stamped out in America, but what about the raging racist inferno in the Middle East and Asia?

A rational, well researched, clear-eye approach to push back at the needless insanity of ALL racism, black, white and other. EVERYONE has a moral obligation push back against the new woke blm racism that is an fruitless litigation of the past which only sentences all our futures. It is irrationally imagining that it is fighting racism, but is in fact making everyones life more unhealthy, hateful and paranoid. And worst of all it is creating more racists by the day. This book is an incredibly well written account of our current precarious situation.

Historia
In her memoir All That Remains, internationally renowned forensic anthropologist and human anatomist Dame Sue Black recounted her life lived eye to eye with the Grim Reaper. During the course of it, she offered a primer on the basics of identifying human remains, plenty of insights into the fascinating processes of death, and a sober, compassionate understanding of its inescapable presence in our existence. Now in this book, Black builds on that memoir, taking us on a guided tour of the human skeleton and explaining how each person's life history is revealed in their bones.

Revisado: 10-15-21
What a thrilling combination of science, forensics and suspense! A good scientist, writer and the rare addition of good narrator. In the midst of all that… a poignant, vulnerable window into her own life. And I even laughed at her interesting take on my own profession as a foot specialist. This is a gem of a book. I enthusiastically recommend.

Historia
For all of neuroscience's advances, we've made little progress on its biggest question: How do simple cells in the brain create intelligence? Jeff Hawkins and his team discovered that the brain uses map-like structures to build a model of the world - not just one model, but hundreds of thousands of models of everything we know. This discovery allows Hawkins to answer important questions about how we perceive the world, why we have a sense of self, and the origin of high-level thought.

Historia
Astrophysicist and best-selling author Mario Livio draws on his own scientific expertise to provide captivating insights into how Galileo reached his bold new conclusions about the cosmos and the laws of nature. A freethinker who followed the evidence wherever it led him, Galileo was one of the most significant figures behind the scientific revolution. He believed that every educated person should know science as well as literature, and insisted on reaching the widest audience possible, publishing his books in Italian rather than Latin.

Too much reserve and respect for the church
Revisado: 05-30-21
Very good and thorough treatment of Galileo, but the author seemed to bend over backwards to give the church and religion a pass. Yes, despite what he wrote, science and faith are not compatible.
