Fascinating
Revisado: 06-09-20
This is my second time through this course, and it was time well spent. There are some very heavy topics on display, but Dr Schumacher is an expert guide. There are a few equations here and there, but they're not much more than "this times this minus this" or some basic exponentials/logarithms and the downloadable handout is quite helpful here.
We never to too deep into any particular subject, so if you are trying to start a real life Pied Piper, this will mostly be motivation more than technical assistance. But the field is so wide and by the end you'll know why.

Historia
In the 1970s, while their contemporaries were protesting the computer as a tool of dehumanization and oppression, a motley collection of college dropouts, hippies, and electronics fanatics were engaged in something much more subversive. Obsessed with the idea of getting computer power into their own hands, they launched from their garages a hobbyist movement that grew into an industry, and ultimately a social and technological revolution.

Covers history that most others do not
Revisado: 01-13-19
A near 50 year story that covers how a memory company created a calculator chip which sparked a world changing revolution. The history of the PC is generally well trod ground, but no others go as far back and give the kind of context to the stories you may have already heard.
I also suggest Turing's Cathedral and Masters of DOOM to bookend this on either side.

Historia
As a child, Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell - and trimonite, the hardest material known to man. When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating and waiting for suitable prey.

I had very low expectations and I was pleasantly surprised. Great casting, especially for Ripley!

Try to think of the singing as Russian...
Revisado: 03-03-17
Otherwise you're going to be disappointed. The narrator did his best, I'm sure, but the voices and singing don't match my idea of these wonderful characters. Totally subjective, I guess!

This Recording Isn't THAT Bad
Revisado: 01-19-17
Any additional comments?
If you're listening to this book on Audible's player, you can reduce the speed to .95 instead of 1. That resolves the speed issue and makes the narrator's voice sound better, although since this is such a long book you will definitely notice when the narrator took a break and came back to record more. Anyway, the story is so good that I didn't notice the sound quality issues most of the time.

Historia
Thanks to his relationship with the ancient Druid Atticus O'Sullivan, Oberon the Irish wolfhound knows trouble when he smells it - and furthermore, he knows he can handle it. When he discovers that a prizewinning poodle has been abducted in Eugene, Oregon, he learns that it's part of a rash of hound abductions all over the Pacific Northwest. Since the police aren't too worried about dogs they assume have run away, Oberon knows it's up to him to track down those hounds and reunite them with their humans. For justice! And gravy!

This narration should win awards!
Revisado: 01-02-17
Potential spoiler: The ENTIRE STORY is read from a dog's perspective! And Luke Daniels nailed it. So much fun. It was a guaranteed pick-me-up when everything on the radio was depressing, and I'm so sorry it's over.
