Historia
Sixteen hundred years ago Britain left the Roman Empire and swiftly fell into ruin. Grand cities and luxurious villas were deserted and left to crumble, and civil society collapsed into chaos. Into this violent and unstable world came foreign invaders from across the sea, and established themselves as its new masters. The Anglo-Saxons traces the turbulent history of these people across the next six centuries. It explains how their earliest rulers fought relentlessly against each other for glory and supremacy, and then were almost destroyed by the onslaught of the vikings.

Historia
The Story of Russia is about how the Russians defined themselves―and repeatedly reinvented such definitions along the way. Moving from Russia’s agrarian beginnings in the first millennium to subsequent periods of monarchy, totalitarianism, and perestroika, all the way up to Vladimir Putin and his use of myths of Russian history to bolster his regime, celebrated historian Orlando Figes examines the ideas that have guided the country’s actions.

Well-constructed historical narrative; butchered pronunciation by narrator
Revisado: 06-22-24
A well-constructed historical narrative. I would recommend this book to literally anyone even remotely interested in Russia. Best explanation I have ever heard of major Russian themes/beliefs, and I lived in Russia for a couple years.
But the otherwise great narrator cannot pronounce Russian words for дерьмo (pardon my Russian). This was distracting in the sense that it repeatedly draws attention to the fact that the work is a western creation—a “foreign agent” as Putin would call it. How hard can it be to find a narrator who also speaks Russian for a book about Russia?

The audio skipped multiple times around the 2/3 mark. Also, the narrators should have been different characters rather than different chapters.

Nearly perfect
Revisado: 08-05-22
Read (listen to) this book! GG Kay masterfully uses the fantasy genre to explore some very real themes--most particularly that of power, in all its forms. Especially the power of memory and the centrality of linguistic memory to cultural identity. It is a very well-presented and compete story. I would call it perfect if it weren't for two minor plot weaknesses that I won't mention here for sake of spoilers. Since these points are minor, this book definitely deserves 5 stars.

A bold yet realistic vision of how technology and social change are creating a food system in which we no longer use animals to produce meat, dairy, or eggs. The End of Animal Farming is not a scolding treatise or a prescription for an ascetic diet. Reese invites listeners - vegan and non-vegan - to consider one of the most important and transformational social movements of the coming decades.

Only read this book if you’re interested in making a difference
Revisado: 05-11-22
While most great books on animal welfare focus on *why* animal farming is wrong, Reese makes the case for *how* we can make a difference and which approaches are likely to be most effective.
Reese also makes the case for how everyone can play a role in making a difference. “In a burgeoning movement like this one, there’s room for everyone”

Historia
Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? In this elegant assessment of the human condition in the third millennium, cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, which play to our psychological biases. Instead, follow the data: Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise, not just in the West but worldwide.

Very convincing case that the enlightenment is now
Revisado: 06-15-20
Americans have an incorrect perception of the state of the world today as compared to the past. Conservatives incorrectly idealize the past and progressives incorrectly ignore progress. Pinker makes a convincing case as to why enlightenment values/liberalism are not to blame for the world's modern-day horrors, but is to thank for modern progress. Highly recommend this read.

Historia
Economics is the mother tongue of public policy. It dominates our decision-making for the future, guides multi-billion-dollar investments, and shapes our responses to climate change, inequality, and other environmental and social challenges that define our times. Pity then, or more like disaster, that its fundamental ideas are centuries out of date yet are still taught in college courses worldwide and still used to address critical issues in government and business alike. That's why it is time, says renegade economist Kate Raworth, to revise our economic thinking for the 21st century. In Doughnut Economics, she sets out seven key ways to fundamentally reframe our understanding of what economics is and does. Along the way, she points out how we can break our addiction to growth; redesign money, finance, and business to be in service to people; and create economies that are regenerative and distributive by design.

Historia
Many blame today's economic inequality, stagnation, and political instability on the free market. The solution is to rein in the market, right? Radical Markets turns this thinking - and pretty much all conventional thinking about markets, both for and against - on its head. The book reveals bold new ways to organize markets for the good of everyone.

This book totally changed the way I think about markets. Its contents are revolutionary and insightful (tho the narration was robotic and hard to pay attention to). Still, the narrator was much better than many others I have heard.
