Weakest So Far

This was the weakest of the Bowers stories so far. The Pawn and the Rook we're both fantastic, but this story just seemed tedious. especially as you hit about the 3/4 Mark and you can tell where the story is going and you just want it to get there and wrap up. I'm going to continue the series but nothing has matched The Pawn so far.

I loved the Pawn so much and this was a suitable sequel but not as good. There weren't any major gripe another than that way the narrator pronounced "rook" for every character. It drove me crazy. I love his narration aside from that one complaint. I'm excited to go through the rest of the series.

The performance, pace, and plot of this book are all incredible. I have listened to a lot of Christian fiction books and I can't begin to describe how this is head and shoulders above others. I don't want to name other authors because I respect their work, but I cannot wait to go through every book by this author. I've also never heard a narration performance as enthralling as this one. Highly recommend

during the first few chapters of the book I thought that this was going to be basically just a Christian version of The Village.
It definitely becomes much more than that, but I wouldn't say this is one of the better Dekker books.

In a way that is hard to explain, the ending seems to simultaneously drag on while also feeling rushed.
from a story standpoint I enjoyed it, but I do think there is some wacky theology being promoted. biblically speaking, separation from the world and living righteously are good virtues. Sin is a big deal to God and we do need redemption from sin, not just from our fears and failures. The book seems to reduce Christianity into a universal "you are good" "you are light" message, The Bible does teach that even our good works are filthy rags though.

So overall I would say this is a good story, that is read incredibly well, but I think that even this book paints an incomplete picture of biblical Christianity. I know it is a work of fiction, and not a systematic theology book, but I still felt like the message was lacking.

After The Choosing I was so excited to carry on with this series but this book disappointed me. I can't pinpoint exactly why I didn't love it, but it's likely a combination of the fact that Carrington is more of a side character, but also the fact that Aaron is still so undeveloped. All of these people have left their lives and have been called to follow this man and risk death and all we ever hear about him are vague platitudes of being chosen and knowing who you are. For me there wasn't enough depth there to make it plausible that anyone would radically change their lives to follow him.

The reader was fantastic, but this one just left me dissatisfied overall. Looking over other reviews, I am in the minority of that. If they release the 3rd book as an audiobook I will certainly listen and hope for a great conclusion.

This book starts strong and pulls you in, and has so much potential, but by the end you're just thinking "That's it?" The payoff isn't worth the time investment and I really liked the message this book was making, but this one didn't have the impact and enjoyment of other works by Dekker.
