Historia
Growing up, Rebecca Clarren only knew the major plot points of her tenacious immigrant family’s origins. Her great-great-grandparents, the Sinykins, and their six children fled antisemitism in Russia and arrived in the United States at the turn of the 20th century, ultimately settling on a 160-acre homestead in South Dakota. Over the next few decades, despite tough years on a merciless prairie and multiple setbacks, the Sinykins became an American immigrant success story.

Engaging and thought provoking
Revisado: 11-06-23
Extensively researched, well written interwoven stories of Jewish settler experiences and Native American experiences, noting some remarkable similarities between the two. Very nicely read by the author. The Native American history is a nice primer (including first person stories) for those unfamiliar with that material, and a stark, condensed reminder for those who already have some familiarity with the travesty.

Historia
Garrison Keillor's latest book is about the wedding of a girl named Dede Ingebretson, who comes home from California with a guy named Brent. Dede has made a fortune in veterinary aromatherapy; Brent bears a strong resemblance to a man wanted for extortion who's pictured on a poster in the town's post office. Then there's the memorial service for Dede's aunt Evelyn, who led a footloose and adventurous life after the death of her husband 17 years previously.

Classic Garrison Keillor
Revisado: 11-21-16
Incredibly well developed characters. Nobody's perfect. Nobody's horribly bad. Very dry and droll which only serves to emphasize the zingers that Garrison Keillor will drop in occasionally. Well worth reading.

Historia
The Unreal and the Real is a major event not to be missed. In this two-volume selection of Ursula K. Le Guin's best short stories--as selected by the National Book Award winning author herself--the reader will be delighted, provoked, amused, and faced with the sharp, satirical voice of one of the best short story writers of the present day. Where on Earth explores Le Guin's earthbound stories which range around the world, from small town Oregon to middle Europe in the middle of revolution to summer camp.

Pretty disjointed
Revisado: 04-30-16
From the descriptions at the start of the book it sounded like it would be very interesting. Unfortunately, it seems as if most of the stories are simply exercises by Le Guin in character development. Interesting, and her writing is interesting, but not enough to make a book out of it.
I stuck it through to the end to see if there was anything that was worthwhile. I don't think I needed to read the entire thing.
The second volume of science fiction stories is much more interesting and I believe are definitely worth reading. I would not recommend this first volume to anyone. Unfortunate, because I really enjoy Le Guin. I have read many of her books and look forward to reading more.
