Historia
It was 23 months after his accident, and Peter was still dealing with constant excruciating pain. He'd seen dozens of doctors and tried a myriad of medications, but nothing seemed to work. Faced with the impossible choice of suffering through the rest of his life, he had an unlikely epiphany, "If I could somehow hike 2,000 miles on the Appalachian Trail, then my leg will have to be better." He set a starting date three weeks out, cobbled together a novice's pack, and set off on a journey destined to change his life forever—though not exactly how he had envisioned it.

Amazing
Revisado: 12-27-24
I started reading this book to gain more insight into thru-hiking. I loved that he detailed how he had to “hike his own hike” by making adjustments to get it done. It helped me a lot. Not just with hiking, but with thinking as well. I tend to be a black and white thinker and it can be limiting. I especially liked that he read it himself. I appreciated it so much more than if a polished voice actor read it. It made it all more personal. And that’s something you don’t get a lot. Thanks Flash52 😉

A necessity
Revisado: 12-10-24
For anyone trying to figure out if you’re autistic, or for anyone diagnosed (especially late-diagnosed) with autism - this book is incredibly important.
Myself, I’ve gotten to a point in therapy where I keep interviewing therapists and finding out that they can’t meet me where I’m at. So it was good to helpful information from an autist who is a therapist. Invaluable to me.

Why Can't I Just Enjoy Things?

Historia
Comedian Pierre Novellie was on stage when a heckler suggested he was autistic. Usually, this disruption would be water off a duck's back but two things made this heckler different: first, he was himself autistic. Second, he turned out to be absolutely right. This random encounter led to a diagnosis of autism at the age of 31 that unravelled his world, explained his struggles and answered questions that had bothered him for his entire life: why were the other kids obsessed with Britney Spears instead of The Goon Show? Why don't people ever say what they mean? Why is everyone chewing so loudly?

This book was so well written. And Pierre’s description of social behaviors and other things was so clear and logical - it was a pleasure to read. Also, this book helped me a lot more in my autistic journey because Pierre and I have some similarities in the way we experience - and don’t experience - certain things. I despair about the differences I feel from other autistic people but this has helped me.

Historia
Alice's journey begins as all good journeys do: hitting on the sales guy at REI. After a tumultuous breakup, a quick career transition, family upheaval, and a sobriety journey that didn't fix her life quite as much as she expected it to, Alice decides that the only way to solve all her problems is to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. But as she begins preparing for the months-long quest, she realizes the answers she's seeking might not be on top of a snow-covered mountain. Especially since she just learned there was snow in California.

Salient and Amazing
Revisado: 11-18-24
Thank you Fern for this amazing portrait of your autistic life. You have been through so much hardship that you shouldn’t have had to. Thank you for your honesty, both about yourself and the people around you. I think it’s the best comeback for all the classism and pettiness you’ve endured. I think this book will do a lot in educating others about what autism can feel like.
Because of reading your book I’ve been able to start journaling again. I sit here on a couch struggling through a shutdown that seems to never end. And your book has made today more bearable because I know I can’t do more than I’m doing. God bless you Fern 🩵

Historia
In January 2023, bestselling author Johann Hari started to inject himself once a week with Ozempic, the diabetes drug that produces significant weight loss. He wasn’t alone—credible predictions suggest that in two years, a quarter of the U.S. population will be taking this class of drug. Proponents say that this is a biological solution to a biological problem. While 95 percent of diets fail, the average person taking one of the new drugs will lose a quarter of their body weight in six months, and keep it off for as long as they take it.

Throughout the book, Ziwe combines pop-culture commentary and personal stories that grapple with her own (mis)understanding of identity.
