Historia
Diana Boyle, a wealthy young widow, has no desire to ever marry again. Particularly not to someone who merely wants her for her fortune. So when she discovers that she’s listed in a directory of rich, single women she is furious, and rightly so. She confronts Maxwell Dean, the man who published the Bachelor’s Directory, and is horrified to find he is far more attractive than his actions have led her to expect. However, Diana is unmoved by Max’s explanation that he authored the list to assist younger sons like himself who cannot afford to marry unless it’s to a woman of means.

A relaxing, fun listen
Revisado: 03-01-24
This is a fun little listen for Potter fans- but it seems like the narrator is not a Potter fan as he regularly mispronounces words, spells, and character names. Still worth listening to!

Historia
It is 1890, and in the days before Christmas, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson are visited at Baker Street by a new client. Eve Allerthorpe, eldest daughter of a grand but somewhat eccentric Yorkshire-based dynasty, is greatly distressed, as she believes she is being haunted by a demonic Christmas spirit. Her late mother told her terrifying tales of the sinister Black Thurrick, and Eve is sure that she has seen the creature from her bedroom window. What is more, she has begun to receive mysterious parcels of birch twigs, the Black Thurrick’s calling card.

Great Story, Did not like Persephone
Revisado: 01-10-23
I think the author did an amazing job world-building. The world has stayed with me after finishing this book and makes me want to return. I loved all the characters except Persephone. Unfortunately, she’s the main character so it made it feel like a chore to finish the book. I found her childish, petulant, unintelligent, and annoying. However, I will say that I think I have such strong feelings about it because the author wrote her so well. She has lived an extremely sheltered life and is trying to assert herself in the ‘real world’. Her low self esteem and self doubt just exhausted me. I really hope the author writes more books from this universe with stronger female characters!

As a Potawatomi woman, she learned from elders, family, and history that the Potawatomi, as well as a majority of other cultures indigenous to this land, consider plants and animals to be our oldest teachers.

Historia
In the middle of the night, a woman wakes to find her beloved city engulfed in flames. Ten seemingly endless years of conflict between the Greeks and the Trojans are over. Troy has fallen. From the Trojan women whose fates now lie in the hands of the Greeks, to the Amazon princess who fought Achilles on their behalf, to Penelope awaiting the return of Odysseus, to the three goddesses whose feud started it all, these are the stories of the women whose lives, loves, and rivalries were forever altered by this long and tragic war.

Really enjoyed this!
Revisado: 03-09-21
I really enjoyed this, the different story lines kept me very interested, it was a fun and academic read. I like the fidelity to the classics, and the creative retelling. However, as a native Greek speaker I am disappointed at the author’s mispronunciations of the name of places and people in her own book. She mispronounces Calliope, Aeaea, Aegina, and other names. I’m not sure if these are the pronunciations they teach in the UK, but it did create an annoyance throughout the audiobook. However, don’t let this deter you, the book is still very enjoyable and well worth the read.

Not what I expected
Revisado: 09-22-20
I thought this would be more of an academic book about how the Catholic Church influenced Western Civ; but it is a biased listing of all of the church’s ‘accomplishments’. Early in the book (first six minutes) the author even dismisses the allegations of sexual assault in the church as ‘rumors of corruption spread by people who know little of the church’. As a religious scholar, I take issue with the way information is presented and events that are left out. If you are a Catholic wanting to hear about your church’s ‘greatest hits’, this book is for you. If you are an academic or someone attempting to do serious research, I do not recommend it.
