Revisado: 10-31-24
I'm a 44 year old man who just heard of this book last week. I have no sentimental attachment and I consider myself quite literate. This is a gripping story. It's appropriate for all ages and we need to give boys more like it.

Historia
James Marsh's Four Years in the Rockies gives brilliant insight into the life of Isaac P. Rose, a man who forged his own path in the wilderness of the far west. This thrilling account of one mountain man's life at the height of the 19th-century fur industry follows Rose as he overcomes adversity, learns from those around him, and becomes one of the most successful trappers of the Rockies. Four Years in the Rockies is essential listening for anyone interested in the 19th-century fur trade and the adventurers who risked their lives to be part of it.

1835 was hard even for a company of armed men
Revisado: 10-25-24
I was always under the impression that 60 armed trappers could pretty much have their own way in the West, but I was mistaken. This is story from history that is not told now and I'm not sure it was ever. These are hard trapping, hard fighting men of a type we only see in the special forces today. Definitely worth a listen.

The book focuses on four naval commanders, two American, two Japanese, whose lives collided at the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944 - a clash involving more ships (almost 300), more men (nearly 200,000) and covering a larger area (more than 100 thousand square miles, roughly the size of the British Isles) than any naval battle in recorded history.

One thing the author did a good job bringing out is the men on both sides had to make historic decisions while recovering from the flu or dengue fever and often after having not slept for days

Historia
On November 14, 1889, Nellie Bly, the crusading young female reporter for Joseph Pulitzer’s World newspaper, left New York City by steamship on a quest to break the record for the fastest trip around the world. Also departing from New York that day—and heading in the opposite direction by train—was a young journalist from The Cosmopolitan magazine, Elizabeth Bisland.

Faster than the speed of science fiction
Revisado: 03-09-23
First the negative: the author follows the modern annoying trend of stressing how sexist and racist and sexist and imperialistic and sexist the world was in 1890. That doesn't add anything to the narrative and could have shortened the production by an hour.
The positive: these women are impressive by any standard. We have 2 women, one of whom is unaware of the other and the 2nd cajoled into going at the last second are racing around the world in opposite directions trying to beat the time of the mythical Englishman from the mind of Jules Verne (Jules Verne himself was a very enthusiastic supporter of Nellie Bly). In our age of jet travel and a world tailored to the tourist and business traveller we have a hard time comprehending the untamed nature of the world in that time. That a journey of this type could be done in 80 days, much less by a single woman who spoke only English, was highly doubtful. I came here after reading Nellie Bly's 72 days; much of which is referenced here. I am a bit annoyed at this author criticizing Bly for not spending enough time or effort pursuing social justice while doing the impossible. It's a good book. There is also a book of the combined writings of these 2 women to give a running chronology but I haven't seen it.

On November 14, 1889, she boarded the steamer Augusta Victoria on her journey of 23,899 miles with the goal of finishing in 75 days. Her journey took her through England, France, Italy, the Suez Canal, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan to San Francisco where she boarded a private chartered train which brought her to New York on January 25, 1890, 72 days and six hours after leaving.

It's another world and not the American century
Revisado: 02-27-23
Other reviews have commented on the mispronunciation of many words and while that is slightly annoying what really struck me was the ignorance of the world in general of the United States. One ship captain received mail addressed to "1st house in America". The average Brit, Frenchman or Spaniard wasn't sure if we were an island or what we were. Our flag was unknown as was our money. This is a world before the great white fleet, the Spanish American war or the first world war. Very interesting in all.

In this volume our hapless hero takes a plane of cows to Istanbul with less than expected results. We also meet a Labrador with pneumonia and a small holding made of bed frames and an old table. Tristan makes an appearance wielding an artificial vagina and an old friend watches a dehorning only to feel better about his own career in banking. We end in the garden with Sigfried where the story began years earlier.

Historia
The worst hard-rock mining disaster in American history began a half hour before midnight on June 8, 1917, when fire broke out in the North Butte Mining Company's Granite Mountain shaft. Sparked more than 2,000 feet below ground, the fire spewed flames, smoke, and poisonous gas through a labyrinth of underground tunnels. Within an hour more than 400 men would be locked in a battle to survive. Within three days 164 of them would be dead.

A tale of work, fire, war and politics
Revisado: 11-01-22
In 1917 an attempt to run an electric cable led to a fire that killed 163 men. That's only a small part of the story. It is hard for us to understand maze of tunnels that ran in all directions at different levels down to 2600 feet and the men who fought for life in the dark, heat and smoke of that underworld.
The story then turns to greed, corruption, WW1, unconstitutional laws, the new deal, strike breaking, labor unions, FDR and WW2. I'm not sure if these other items are needed to tell the story or if they detract from the heroism of building bulkheads to hide from gas during the fire as their air slowly ran out.

Historia
Put on your armor - it’s time to fight. We are in a spiritual war, William Gurnall reminds us, and “the Christian’s safety lies in resisting. All the armour provided is to defend the Christian fighting, none to secure him flying; stand, and the day is ours; fly or yield, and all is lost". This hard-hitting volume is packed with biblical wisdom for day-to-day Christian living, as helpful today as it was when first published nearly 400 years ago. Although history left us little knowledge of William Gurnall’s life, it preserved this book.

We tend to think ourselves very sophisticated and wise. A quick listen to this 350+ year old work will quickly inform you that not only has man not changed over time but these sins, problems, foibles and the solutions have been known since antiquity. If anything, he's more wise and sophisticated than our modern age.
