Historia
For a long time, Lucy Sante felt unsure of her place. Born in Belgium, the only child of conservative working-class Catholic parents who transplanted their little family to the United States, she felt at home only when she moved to New York City in the early 1970s and found her people among a band of fellow bohemians. Some would die young, from drugs and AIDS, and some would become jarringly famous. Sante flirted with both fates on her way to building an estimable career as a writer. But she still felt like her life was a performance. She was presenting a facade, even to herself.

For a particular audience
Revisado: 01-10-25
Please read to the bottom. This book is a fairly disorganized collection of thoughts about one person by one person. It’s not a book of short stories. It’s not a memoir. A poem is recited but it’s not a book of poetry. It’s not even a narrative with a beginning, middle, and end. On top of that, I found it to be very self-absorbed. It’s like someone who smokes a lot of weed calls you up to let out their thoughts of the day on a few topics and you take those and, without editing or organizing them, just release them. There were some interesting observations. Some of the thoughts were provocative. But it comes across as sloppy. Why not tidy it up? I decided to listen to the whole thing because it’s about a trans woman (one from entirely European stock). Here’s what I liked: the author doesn’t cater to one way of understanding her experience. She’s a unique voice with unique perspectives that don’t cohere. I appreciated that. It felt both honest and true. And that is what the stars I gave it are for.

Historia
Vividly written and exhaustively researched, Jonathan Eig’s King: A Life is the first major biography in decades of the civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.—and the first to include recently declassified FBI files. In this revelatory new portrait of the preacher and activist who shook the world, the bestselling biographer gives us an intimate view of the courageous and often emotionally troubled human being who demanded peaceful protest for his movement but was rarely at peace with himself.

What a treat to hear this compelling story about a nine year-old trying to get to the USA from El Salvador in the memoirist’s own voice. He is so good at describing his experience, the internal and external landscapes. Bravo! I highly recommend this audiobook.

Cher: The Memoir, Part One promises to be an engaging and exciting audiobook experience, befitting this incredible book. Read in part by Cher herself, the book is introduced, and each chapter launched, by the author. Rounding out each chapter as she continues the narrative is celebrated stage actor Stephanie J. Block. Stephanie starred on Broadway in The Cher Show for which she won a Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, and Outer Critics Circle Award.

Just what I wanted
Revisado: 12-08-24
Candid, funny, touching, and loaded with foul language. This is exactly what I’d hoped to find in Cher’s (first) memoir. It’s very autobiographical as well, and I learned a lot about her family before she came on the scene. What I expect most from Cher is honestly. And she delivers.
I appreciate that with dyslexia, reading her own book would be a challenge. Nevertheless, she begins each chapter and then the narration transitions fairly seamlessly to that of her friend, whose cadence, tone, and timbre are very similar to Cher’s. What a creative solution to a problem! I loved every minute of it and look forward to part 2!

Valuable Insight and Truth

Very good for its demographic
Revisado: 12-08-24
I think this book is uniquely valuable for certain kinds of men—men who welcome taking guidance from other men. It may be more valuable for those men than many other books on living with PTSD. There are references and analogies to cars, sports, finance, and the military (not surprisingly) that I think will resonate. While it ‘wasn’t for me’ in some ways, I appreciated the authors’ stories, tributes, understandings, and steps for being on a road to increased PSG: Post-Traumatic Growth. I think they did a very good job.

Historia
Greenville County, South Carolina, is a wild, lush place that is home to the Boatwright family - a tight-knit clan of rough-hewn, hard- drinking men who shoot up each other's trucks, and indomitable women who get married young and age too quickly. At the heart of this story is Ruth Anne Boatwright, known simply as Bone, a bastard child who observes the world around her with a mercilessly keen perspective.

But behind her office door, she was having panic attacks and sobbing at her desk every morning. After years of questioning what was wrong with herself, she was diagnosed with complex PTSD—a condition that occurs when trauma happens continuously, over the course of years.

Revisado: 11-17-24
I was increasingly impressed with this memoir the more I got into it. I was engaged from the start but Stephanie really goes to the deeper and broader end of the pool as she makes her way through. I love the directions she takes the reader, especially regarding cultural factors and intergenerational trauma. The therapy sessions she lets us in on were invaluable. Brava, Ms. Foo! An outstanding contribution to this genre.
