Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Predictable stereotypes
Revisado: 01-16-23
Revisionist fiction. First glaring assumption, that lost me, the air was not cleaner in the 60’s. Cleaner now. Story is so tired.

Historia
A remarkable tale, The Queen of the South spans continents, from the dusty streets of Mexico to the sparkling waters off the coast of Morocco, to Spain and the Strait of Gibraltar. A sweeping story set to the irresistible beat of the drug smugglers' ballads, it encompasses sensuality and cruelty, love and betrayal, as its heroine's story unfolds.

French accent toooooo thick
Revisado: 04-16-17
If you could sum up The Girl You Left Behind in three words, what would they be?
I almost gave up on this book. The only reason I didn't was it was an assignment from my Book Club. What is the reason to use so heavy a French accent for the main character that it interferes with understanding what she is saying?????. We get it she is French but we are listening in English.just as if we were reading it in English, come on!

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

A loving view and perspective of a difficult upbringing in a poverty stricken area.
In that context it is a thoughtful analysis of policy impact on that poverty without devolving into party politics.

Any additional comments?
If you have ever been betrayed by a friend, you won’t like this fictionalized account. That is what Truman Capote did, he courted and then betrayed friends. This is what is detailed in this book.
If you have ever been unfortunate enough to then have that betrayal repeated and embellished for sport or profit, you will not like this book, because that is what this author did.
If you have ever been the subject of envy and shamed as punishment, you will not like this book.

Maybe better read than heard
Revisado: 12-17-15
Would you consider the audio edition of The Boston Girl: A Novel to be better than the print version?
No, the first lines of the book say something like " anyone can tell from hearing me speak I was born and raised in Boston" . Narration does not convey this.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I did not hear any sense of Boston from the voice.

Narration lost me
Revisado: 06-21-15
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I did not finish this book, in fact I could only listen in total for less than an hour. The narrator 's voice put me to sleep. It is a deep, melodic voice with not enough passion /inflection / engagement in the story. The voice and the story put me to sleep. Not good since I listen while I drive.
Would you recommend The Sound of Things Falling to your friends? Why or why not?
Couldn't get into it.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
It had an announcer qaulity to the voice rather than engaged with the story and its nuances.
Do you think The Sound of Things Falling needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Didn't listen to enough of it.
