Enjoyable Characters and Setting

I loved this book about a young woman finding her place in the world. The characters are interesting and relatable. Heartwarming and a nice little vacation from the cares of the world.

Historia
From the author of dozens of #1 New York Times bestsellers and the creator of many unforgettable movies comes a vivid, intelligent, and nostalgic journey through three decades of horror as experienced through the eyes of the most popular writer in the genre. In 1981, years before he sat down to tackle On Writing, Stephen King decided to address the topic of what makes horror horrifying and what makes terror terrifying.

Stephen King as Critic
Revisado: 11-09-24
Overall, I thought this book was pretty interesting. It was written in the late 70s so parts are dated, and often in a fun way. His vision of the future is sometimes hilariously wrong. I found a few new authors through this book and felt compelled to revisit some others. And a lot of King’s insights are quite interesting. I especially enjoyed when he spoke about the writing process.

Great Narration and Sound Effects
Revisado: 10-19-24
Stephen Fry is a great narrator and the sound effects were usually fun, though a few grew tedious. I really liked it few of these stories but felt that others were underwhelming.

Historia
Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars: same year at Yale, same debut year in publishing. But Athena’s a cross-genre literary darling, and June didn’t even get a paperback release. Nobody wants stories about basic white girls, June thinks. So when June witnesses Athena’s death in a freak accident, she acts on impulse: she steals Athena’s just-finished masterpiece, an experimental novel about the unsung contributions of Chinese laborers to the British and French war efforts during World War I.

Historia
Kiese Laymon is a fearless writer. In his essays, personal stories combine with piercing intellect to reflect both on the state of American society and on his experiences with abuse, which conjure conflicted feelings of shame, joy, confusion, and humiliation. Laymon invites us to consider the consequences of growing up in a nation wholly obsessed with progress yet wholly disinterested in the messy work of reckoning with where we’ve been.

Amazing Journey
Revisado: 08-21-24
This has to be one of the best books of the year. Amazing narrative delivered so poetically. These are the most real characters I’ve ever encountered in any book. The author does a great job of capturing the lived experience of growing up black in a racist world. I can’t praise this one enough. Read it.

Hilarious observations about the world
Revisado: 08-07-24
I have always found George Carlin funny and I did enjoy most of this book. But I do think that a lot of it hasn’t aged well. What was once a rebellion against pc attitudes now seems reckless and cruel at times. Yes, he didn’t know what we know now about pandemics, climate change, etc. You can cut him some slack, but it’s still hard to listen to at times. Having said that, my favorite parts are his keen observations about the inanity of much of our language. Yes, I have very mixed feelings about this book.

The masters of sword and sorcery fiction might be dead, but just because Robert E. Howard is no longer penning Conan tales doesn't mean you have to go without your fix of axe-wielding barbarians, lusty wenches, and evil wizards! Literary Rebel is proud to bring you a whole new crop of monthly fantasy fiction by talented new authors. In this first issue: savages kidnap virgins for sacrifice, a slave escapes his bonds only to fall victim to royal machinations, treasure seekers find more than they bargained for, and a sword-wielding maiden does battle with a serpent lord.

Rollicking Adventure
Revisado: 07-15-24
This is good old-fashioned fantasy like you used to read in Weird Tales Magazine. Not at all PC; somehow lots of female characters wind up naked. But the stories are fun and the audiobook version has the best narrator imaginable for these kinds of stories.

Historia
Franklin D. Roosevelt famously called December 7, 1941, "a date which will live in infamy." History would prove him correct; the events of that day - when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor - ended the Great Depression, changed the course of FDR's presidency, and swept America into World War II. In Pearl Harbor, acclaimed historian Steven M. Gillon provides a vivid, minute-by-minute account of Roosevelt's skillful leadership in the wake of the most devastating military assault in American history. FDR proved both decisive and deceptive, inspiring the nation....
