The best stories pull readers in and keep them turning the pages, eager to discover more—to find the answer to the question: "And then what happened?" The true hallmark of great literature is great imagination, and as Neil Gaiman and Al Sarrantonio prove with this outstanding collection, when it comes to great fiction, all genres are equal.

You will probably find at least one story that you like
Revisado: 02-10-24
It’s a hodgepodge of stories. A couple of them were very dark, disturbing, and thus, I liked them very much. I found most of the stories boring. There were a couple that I was surprised had made it into the anthology, because they just didn’t seem on par with the surroundings.
There might be something in here for everyone? Not really sure. I kind of wish I’d used my credit for something else, but then again, it’s always worth it to hear Neil Gaiman’s voice.

It’s okay

I went in with the wrong expectations. I was expecting a generally good piece of literature but it really just answers the query: “what if Dracula and a Wikipedia page about colonialism in Mexico made a book baby?” If that’s your cup of tea, you’ll probably find this entertaining.

Historia
Against the backdrop of worldwide, unexplainable natural disasters, Dr. Virginia Marilyn Edwards (Emmy Award-winner Kerry Washington) seeks out Agent Scott Thomas (Emmy Award-winner Laurence Fishburne) at a secretive government headquarters. Virginia claims these events are signs, and unless Agent Thomas helps her, she believes things will only get worse. Her desperation is dialed up higher with a shocking proclamation as she stands before him pregnant, weak, and weary: “Agent Thomas,” she says, “I believe I am Mary.”

I am sad that I listened to this story, but happy that I heard Kerry Washington.

I started this thinking it would be some good horror fun, a la Rosemary’s Baby. It is instead an unironic, unimaginative religious and political narrative, something that I’d imagine would appeal to conservatives. If you are like me and you are looking for well-produced campy horror, you will likely be disappointed.
