It's like 5 volumes of a Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley epic novel. There is NO character development here, it is solely told in the head of the main character. That process can be interesting and engaging (see "The Modern Prometheus") but this is just too dang long and too much introspection to be engaging (at least after 13 hours and 56 min).

Really boring...RL just unable to make the action/story translate well. Some authors can pull off writing fight scenes but RL just couldnt make this one pay off.

I guess I was kind of hoping for a riff off of some Territories facet but it was just a serial killer/retired cop thing. Could have been more engaging but the tech was very poorly and shallowly researched. Maybe that's my fault for reading hard sci-fi most of the time but still, those cars do get stolen and researching it would have made it better. Also, I just don't think a real hacker would have used the 'Windows Theme Manager" for sounds.

Not everyone can be Roy Dotrice and I understand that even a Frank Muller is exceedingly rare but I did not like James' interpretation of Bright Song, very distracting and unpleasant.

I'm a big fan of the magic or technology being an integral part of the story; a well thought out magic or technology platform really enhances the story. I certainly liked the shapes and colours concept. I also liked what she did with the balancing of the magical powers (no spoilers). However, there is no sense of occasion; I found myself numerous times getting half-way into a pivotal scene and having to backup to figure out just how in the world did I get hip deep into a major conflict (character or military) and miss the start of it? I suppose it could be in part due to the lack-luster narrator performance. Not a bad performance on any particular category just low to average marks in all of them (pacing, emphasis, excitement, etc.).

Not what I expected out of Asaro given that I have 3 other books of hers. I just think the whole production (book and audio) really didn't come together like they thought it would.
