God's grace and love and how we humans will insist on what we think how God sees things.

I felt that her earthly "views" sometimes encroached on what God's grace and direction is.
But it really does not matter because God clarifies all.
The book generally was a beautiful testament to who God is.

This story is the story of all of us in many ways.
What life presents to us and how we internalize it into our "script " sets the course of our life. But we have the power to change the narrative to something
beyond circumstances to something beautiful.

A Breath of Fresh Air

I love this book. It tells the story of grief. You realize your feelings are universal. The author did a great job. She renders a blessing to those grieving. The narrator gave the book so much life. I laughed at the frankness because I recognize myself. I need to own the book. So many little gems.

Good overview

I found the concepts understandable and illuminating. I like the description of the early life of the Buddha.
I did not like the section on women in Buddhism. I thought it related what it was like for women early in history and the way it still is for many women. Buddha, in the end, revealed how status quo he was in some of his thinking. As illustrated by the rules he set for the women who he ALLOWED to become his followers. It is an excuse that he was keeping to the customs of the time. If he was as enlightened as purported, he would have insisted on equal treatment for women.
His rules were designed to protect the "institution" he created. I like the Buddhist way. But maybe Buddha should have done a second round under the tree. I think he missed a few things about the equality of the species.

I learned so much from this book.

I learned about South African history. I learned about the ups and downs of struggling for freedom. But most of all I learned about this remarkable man. He embodied the best of what it is to be a leader. The character it really takes to be a successful human being engaged in a quest for justice - large and small. The world has been blessed that he lived.

EPIC!!

I loved this book. I would count it as one of the best I have ever read. This is a masterpiece. She has managed to incorporate history, scholarly works, political events and exceptional insight into the human psyche. This is a beautiful, compelling and extremely well written book. If she never writes another piece, it can certainly be said she has created something that will stand forever. Simply beautiful.
