Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

MUST READ!
Revisado: 12-18-22
Ms Miller is a wonderful writer & with this book & her other, CIRCE, has given me a new appreciation of Greek mythology; making both stories most accessible to me.
Wish both books had been around & required reading instead of Homer's Illiad.
Ms Miller, in the words of Oliver Twist ... "more please"!

Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen - the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria - took up residence on Dragonstone. Fire & Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.

Simon Vance delivers but I found it to be ...
Revisado: 10-21-22
one of driest, just short of boring books I've read (listened to) in years ... narrated, it was easy to let it run in the background as white noise ... if I'd have tried to read it I might not have made it past the first chapter ...
3 Stars? (being generous) usually I'm not brutal with my reviews ... I just had an incredible time keeping up with the locations, social dynamics & extremely loooonnnngggg list of characters (many with similar names); with the dependence upon a narrative style one has to absorb so much detail to follow the storyline; & there's not much dialog so you never get a chance to get to know the characters; essentially, I feel the writing style makes the reader work way too hard.
I love listening to Mr Vance's voice so it was great to fall asleep to, so there was that 😁

Historia
Hugh of Singleton, fourth son of a minor knight, has been educated as a clerk, usually a prelude to taking holy orders. However, feeling no certain calling despite a lively faith, he turns to the profession of surgeon, training in Paris and then hanging out his sign in Oxford. A local lord asks him to track the killer of a young woman whose bones have been found in the castle cesspit. She is identified as the impetuous missing daughter of a local blacksmith, and her young man, whom she had provoked very publicly, is in due course arrested and sentenced at the Oxford assizes.

In AD 664 King Oswy of Northumbria has convened a synod at Whitby to hear debate between the Roman and Celtic Christian Churches and decide which shall be granted primacy in his kingdom. At stake is much more than a few disputed points of ritual; Oswy's decision could affect the survival of either Church in the Saxon kingdoms. When the Abbess Etain, a leading speaker for the Celtic Church, is found murdered, suspicion falls upon the Roman faction.

Historia
The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers, and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them. Everything was perfect - except for the misty Marshlands to the north, which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Anyone sensible knew that the Ickabog was just a myth to scare children into behaving. But the funny thing about myths is that sometimes they take on a life of their own.

Kept thinking of how the story mirrors our own here in US Politics, tho.
Should be required reading for all.

Revisado: 10-23-21
this man will never be allowed to retire. he always seems to get dragged into grand adventures ... enjoyable "read"
notes on narrator ... passable ... however, being an avid audio book listener, my 2 cents is that either the narrator OR the sound engineer producing the performance needs to BREAK (BREATHE for a few beats) in between change ups to various sections within chapters ... there's two threads (sometimes more) weaving together and this narration often rushes (crushes) one thread onto/into another ... without visual clues you'd see in the written book or visuals, if this were a movie, I often got confused & needed to rewind 30 seconds or more to catch details as the threads flipped and flopped often and I wasn't keeping up ... kinda "fiddly" ...
otherwise, I enjoyed it VERY much!

Love yet another one ... can't believe I've already read/listened it through within 24 hrs of its release!!!
I've enjoyed Jeff Wheeler's entire library & have read each offering at least 3 times ...
I love his stories, characters, everything. Well balanced between the lives of characters and believable events. (even magical elements 🤩)
Narration by Kate Rudd is excellent!
If you're looking for an "easy on the ears" series, the " First Argentines" is a great start BUT you might consider the Kingfountain series, too. It's about events later in this royal family's lineage but a great story, along with the two prequels and The Maid's War ... they are all intertwined ...
😍😍😍🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍
