Historia
In Garner County, girls are told they have the power to lure grown men from their beds, to drive women mad with jealousy. That’s why they’re banished for their 16th year, to release their magic into the wild so they can return purified and ready for marriage. But not all of them will make it home alive. Sixteen-year-old Tierney James dreams of a better life - a society that doesn’t pit friend against friend or woman against woman, but as her own grace year draws near, she quickly realizes that it’s not just the brutal elements they must fear.

insufferable narration
Revisado: 03-26-21
Story is decent, but there is the mean girl sarcastic tone the narrator uses to represent one of the characters which gives it a cheap and insufferable quality.

Historia
Thirteen tales are unspun from the deeply familiar and woven anew into a collection of fairy tales that wind back through time. Emma Donoghue reveals heroines young and old in unexpected alliances--sometimes treacherous, sometimes erotic, but always courageous. Told with luminous voices that shimmer with sensuality and truth, these age-old characters shed their antiquated cloaks to travel a seductive new landscape, radiantly transformed.

Emma Donoghue is great
Revisado: 02-27-21
Loved the flow, the feminism, the women's ways. Excellently rewritten fairytales.
A little flavor of 1001 Arabian nights in structure.

Historia
In a secret, subterranean world beneath the prairie of the Old West, a homesteader risks her life in search of a safe haven. A workman in Andrew Carnegie's steel mills is turned into a medical oddity by the brutal power of the furnaces. A young woman created through genetic manipulation is destroyed by the same force that gave her life. With her distinctive blend of magical realism, science, and poetic prose, Anjali Sachdeva demonstrates a preternatural ability to laser in on our fears, our hopes, and our longings in order to point out intrinsic truths about society and humanity.

Historia
For as long as Augusten Burroughs could remember, he knew things he shouldn't have known. He manifested things that shouldn't have come to pass. And he told exactly no one about this, save one person: his mother. His mother reassured him that it was all perfectly normal, that he was descended from a long line of witches, going back to the days of the early American colonies. And that this family tree was filled with witches. It was a bond that he and his mother shared - until the day she left him in the care of her psychiatrist to be raised in his family.

Fantastic Writer. Narration devalues text.
Revisado: 10-16-19
I'm a fan. Burroughs is an extremely talented writer, but his narration doesn't do his writing justice. If he had read in his own cadence I suspect the listen would be fabulous, but it sounds like he was coached to the point of distraction. (Emphasis on the wrong words and unnatural flow.) If this is your first introduction to Burroughs, you may want to purchase the book so you can appreciate his humor.
