Historia
America emerged from Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal with strong democratic values and broadly shared prosperity. But for the past 30 years, American politics has been dominated by a conservative movement determined to undermine the New Deal's achievements. Now, the tide may be turning, and in The Conscience of a Liberal Paul Krugman, the world's most widely read economist and one of its most influential political commentators, charts the way to reform.

A must for anyone interested in U.S. politics.
Revisado: 10-06-13
Where does The Conscience of a Liberal rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Krugman goes beyond economics by placing the current economic issues that plague the U.S. into their historical and political context. Easy to understand but not "dumbed down".

Historia
By the time Rock Hudson's death in 1985 alerted all America to the danger of the AIDS epidemic, the disease had spread across the nation, killing thousands of people and emerging as the greatest health crisis of the 20th century. America faced a troubling question: What happened? How was this epidemic allowed to spread so far before it was taken seriously?

Not the best of the Barchester series.
Revisado: 03-08-13
What did you like best about The Warden? What did you like least?
Trollope is wonderful. The characters at the center of this story aren't particularly interesting, however.
Would you recommend The Warden to your friends? Why or why not?
I would recommend The Warden to anyone who likes Trollope. Despite certain weaknesses, as the first book in the Barchester chronicles, it is worth reading. The later books in this series are more interesting. Don't give up on the series as a whole, if you don't find The Warden to be particularly compelling.

Silly bodice ripper of a story but great narration
Revisado: 02-07-13
Would you try another book from Daphne du Maurier and/or John Castle?
I would not purchase another book by du Maurier. BUT, if John Castle is available, he should be engaged to narrate more (and better) books.
What do you think your next listen will be?
V. Woolf - The Voyage Out
What does John Castle bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He does a wonderful job. I don't think I would have listened to the entire book if anyone else was the narrator. As was the case re. his narration of Vanity Fair, the level of drama, the accents of various characters, etc. - all perfect.

Challenging but well worth the effort.
Revisado: 12-02-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This book covers a very broad topic and does so extremely well. The political history of Europe since WWII is fascinating. It is also relevant to anyone wishing to deepen their understanding of many important current issues and struggles in this region of the world.
Any additional comments?
This material requires real attention and focus by the listener. If you have the opportunity to approach it with this understanding, it is well worth your while.

Historia
Set during the time of the Napoleonic Wars, this classic gives a satirical picture of a worldly society. The novel revolves around the exploits of the impoverished but beautiful and devious Becky Sharp who craves wealth and a position in society. Calculating and determined to succeed, she charms, deceives and manipulates everyone she meets. A novel of early 19th-century English society, it takes its title from the place designated as the centre of human corruption in John Bunyan's 17th-century allegory.

Thoroughly delightful!

If you could sum up Vanity Fair in three words, what would they be?
Humorous, elegant and sly.
What does John Castle bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Castle's performance really enhances Thackeray's humor and insights re. British society at that time. He also has a wonderful voice and does a great job portraying the many different characters with appropriate accents, etc.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Hugely entertaining. I loved it.
