I couldn’t even finish

Oh. My. Gosh. TWO HOURS of backstory (that we already knew) for a 10 min mini s*x scene followed by TWO MORE HOURS about Casteel’s backstory (all which we already basically know) followed by some new s*x scene. I can’t. I have loved all the books up to this point but this was a DNF. I’m only 4 hours into this book and I’m done and so, so, soooo bored. I’m so mad I used a credit on this book.

I didn’t really know what to expect; I purposely didn’t look up a lot about the book so I could be surprised. Went beyond my expectations. Read like nothing else she’d written previously, and I loved that all her characters were young adults (23) and not children (though they were definitely treated like children at times by those older). I know there is a sequel in the works and I genuinely cannot wait for it. Loved!

Insta-mates!? Like what in tarnation. And then the whole love-hate whining made it so one hour in I had to DNF. I returned the third book. The narrator was worse than a moody teenager with her constant emotional flip flops, and the only time she was tolerable was never. She blamed everything that happened to her on everyone else and THEY KILLED MY FATHER so I’LL HATE THEM FOREVER. Exhausted just from reading the first book and the first hour of this book.

What am I missing here?

This story was written like a raunchy high schooler wrote it for her creative writing class and posted it to fan fiction or wattpad and somehow got it published. The spicy parts were fairly hot but the rest was meh. Honestly, I don’t understand the good reviews—there was no character development. Her main and ONLY beef with her mom and the crown is that they killed her dad at some point in her lifetime, and that her mom agreed with the crown betrothing her to the prince. She has zero other reasons to dislike anything or anyone in the book. It worked for Inigo Montoya but not this very flat character. It was INSTANT love/lust with a few “I hate you’s” thrown in randomly. She immediately hated the prince when he’d been nothing but nice to her because YOUR PARENTS KILLED MY DAD SOME TIME IN MY LIFE. Zero percent character building. She has a lady in waiting and suddenly that drops off. The vampires “attack” the castle but there is no proof and she is whisked away from the castle instead of kept there for safety. Like what!? Also while they’re loudly doing it does the other guard just like pretend he isn’t 5 feet away?? Soooo many questions. Very few answers. This author has a lot of room to grow; they have potential.

Male character voicing was bad, but the storyline was good!

A genuinely good 2.5 book series! I actually really loved the continuity from book one into book two and then book 2.5. Can’t wait to read more! Narrator needs to work a bit on the male voicing though.

Tied up the loose ends

I did not expect to feel this sadness knowing that I will never hear from these characters again. This book was the trippiest of them all, but is still so very good. I’m going to miss these characters keenly.

Wow

So, I was very excited initially that we got to hear about the childhoods up to when we first met the queens in the first novel. But it took such a turn with Elsbeth and her reign, and the violence against her was far more triggering than I imagined it would be for me. Just wow. Expertly written, very troubling and sad novel.

Each story seems to highlight the best and worst of human nature. Absolutely gorgeous stories that will chill and delight you. Loved every single one.
