Mystery 1st, humor 2nd, and romance 3rd
Revisado: 12-12-24
I like reading my mysteries with romance as a backdrop to the main plot and throw in some humor for the perfect storyline.
The narrator is excellent. She distinguishes and highlight each characters personality.
I listened and enjoyed both audiobooks in the Crown Jewel series. The plots were interesting and well thought out. My title review is a play on the mottos God, family, and country or God, country, and family as it relates to this book’s story.
I look forward to listening to the 3rd audiobook when released at the end of this month and the creation of the fourth book in audio.

Same voices in different series
Revisado: 12-06-24
Unfortunately, I couldn’t follow this series as the main character Marius sounds and personality is narrated exactly like Christopher in another of the author’s series Lord Edgington Investgate. Unsure if story written with same tone, but audio version is a carbon copy. Which is often the problem when an author uses the same narrator for a different series, they should use a different narrator for each if their series.
I will try reading this series and hope I can get a different tone for a distinction in storylines between the two series.

Mystery isn’t all murder
Revisado: 08-22-24
I liked this 2nd book better than the 1st one. The characters are better developed and more seamless with the storyline. Specifically, the dog was a spirited sidekick helping solving the crime instead of the 1st book’s poor attempt of am just so cute behavior that instead came off as an unruly dog.
What I liked best was a crime mystery of a burglary, which was a nice change from murder. Afterall, mystery is a broad term for the unknown, so doesn’t always to be about solving a murder. Look forward to the listening to the next book whether it’s about murder or another crime to solve.

New narrator not up to snuff
Revisado: 08-10-24
I’m struggling with change of narrator to Sofia for the main female character, Cressida. I really like this book series previous narrator, Daphne, tone for the Bright Young Things main characters. This narrator’s Cressida doesn’t sound young enough, may be it’s her husky voice I find off-putting. I increased the voice speed for a faster tempo and so far listened through chapter 3 to see if I can accept the change, but I’m leaning to returning for a refund.
This narrator does the other new characters fine and does a good job in distinguishing between male and female characters. However, only Cressida is in this book so far to my listening point and missing her best friend and her friend’s brother (a potential love interest) for full immersion effect of the new narrator.

Out of Character
Revisado: 08-10-24
I liked the story enough to continue on to the 2nd book in the series, however, I not a big fan of the main female character Katherine know it all attitude and her undisciplined dog.
The dog doesn’t bark or lift her head as a warning when someone approaches them, but barks at other times when told to be quiet. Further, her precious dog constantly licks people in the face and climbs on their legs without permission and stealing of everything in sight without any correction by Katherine. Yet, she considers killing a butterfly she has entrapped in her hand as disgusting because its body parts is touching her hand as it moves around to escape.

I can read, so what’s the point of an AI narrator?
Revisado: 06-11-24
We don’t listen to audiobooks for a monotonous narration that is missing voice distinction between characters. The same voice for every character is just reading the book out loud and lacks a voice actor skill in narrating a book.
I did not finish listening to this free audiobook using virtual narration. I have limited insight to the story outside my initial interest was piqued, but then not held with the narrator choice.

Inconsistent and repetitive
Revisado: 06-11-24
The author is inconsistent with the Arianna character. One moment it’s written she can be a lady or anything she sets her mind to, despite not being raised as a lady after her father’s banishment to the Caribbeans. Yet, loses her composure the minute someone irritates her with replied curses and angry shown in her demeanor. A lady is defined by her composure, not an attribute of this heroine.
Another issue is the repetition of Adrianne’s background and raising in the Caribbean as to her strong and independent ways. Yes, but this is book 2 why is the author repeating this same information over and over again.
Give her background and move on with the story, character is shown not stated. No matter how many times said.
The author has the same issue in another of her book series. I’ve stopped reading both series because of the constant reference to the heroines background to demonstrate them as strong and independent women.
The narrator did a good job with character distinction and accents. And the cocoa information was very interesting.

Backdown Memory Lane
Revisado: 05-06-24
Excellent narration and telling of Posey’s past, at least some as related to her first fiancé Harry, her father, and her brother relationships.
This series has always been told with a touch of morbid, so is a mixed cozy and suspenseful series. Other books in the series have been written in a similar style, i.e. Death in Venice had her losing another fiancé and the nasty circumstances of his affair with another woman there.
I look forward to getting the full story of her mother and her missing friend. There was a partial telling in a previous book, but I think her mother is alive.

Kept me on the edge
Revisado: 04-08-24
A excellent who did it and plot that enthralled me following the narrator’s typical Lenox and Swift humorous audio telling. I’ve listened to all the books in this series and this was the best book. Which is a rare occurrence being a late series book.
I can’t wait to purchase to the new books in the series when available as audiobooks.
