Historia
With intelligence and wit, author Jonathan Clements blends documentary and storytelling styles to connect the past, present, and future of Japan, and in broad yet detailed strokes reveals a country of paradoxes: a modern nation steeped in ancient traditions; a democracy with an emperor as head of state; a famously safe society built on 108 volcanoes resting on the world's most active earthquake zone; a fast-paced urban and technologically advanced country whose land consists predominantly of mountains and forests.

Just the right balance of detail and connected overview
Revisado: 01-19-25
Just the right balance of detail and connected overview. Mentions several cultural concepts we hear about, showing how they link into Japanese history and culture, without getting bogged down at all.

Mostly boring but has a very modern twist
Revisado: 01-17-25
I was bored by the pure and concentrated story of the politics among several dozen cloistered old religious men. The ending is a ultra modern surprise, which does not redeem the book for me. But I'm sure it does for many.

Historia
For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

Masterpiece of innovative "anti-fantasy"
Revisado: 11-07-24
Masterpiece of innovative "anti-fantasy." Also simply a great story with very well-developed characters. Serves standalone and as first volume of an epic.

In Frankenstein: Lost Souls, Dean Koontz puts a singular twist on this classic tale of ambition and science gone wrong, to forge a new legend uniquely suited to our times. It is a story of revenge, redemption, and the thin line that separates human from inhuman.

Historia
Michael Crichton, creator of Jurassic Park, ER, Twister, and Westworld, had a passion project he’d been pursuing for years, ahead of his untimely passing in 2008. Knowing how special it was, his wife, Sherri Crichton, held back his notes and the partial manuscript until she found the right author to complete it: James Patterson, the world’s most popular storyteller.

Detailed Hawaiian setting 5, volcanos 5, story 1
Revisado: 08-21-24
Loved the accurate Hawaiian geographic and historical details, the dynamics of the volcanoes were interesting, but the characters, their actions, and the plot logic were not believable

Completely unrealistic reactions and story, author is naive and seemingly an AI
Revisado: 03-09-24
It's fine to posit the appearance of the boxes a s strings, but all the reactions and story following are completely naive to how people a s society work. I haven't been this disappointed by a book since a sixth grade History textbook

Wonderful story and writing! But cliffhanger for book 2
Revisado: 11-30-23
Wonderful story and writing! I thought it to be one of my top 10 all time as it played out. Just one problem... it ends with a cliffhanger for book 2, and I hate that. Still 5/5 though - it's that good. And now I'm on to book 2....
