Historia
The best one-volume biography of Madison’s life, Ketcham’s biography not only traces Madison’s career, it gives listeners a sense of the man. As Madison said of his early years in Virginia under the study of Donald Robertson, who introduced him to thinkers like Montaigne and Montesquieu, "all that I have been in life I owe largely to that man." It also captures a side of Madison that is less rarely on display.

Good biography, narrator could be better.
Revisado: 08-09-23
This is a pretty good book. The narrator reads clearly, but mispronounces so many words that it becomes a little absurd.

Historia
Paradise Lost, along with its companion piece, Paradise Regained, remain the most successful attempts at Greco-Roman style epic poetry in the English language. Remarkably enough, they were written near the end of John Milton's amazing life, a bold testimonial to his mental powers in old age. And, since he had gone completely blind in 1652, 15 years prior to Paradise Lost, he dictated it and all his other works to his daughter.

Narrator is poor.
Revisado: 08-21-21
Charlton Griffin has a cool voice, but I'm afraid he's not all that bright. Many mistakes of inflection indicate his poor comprehension of his subject. I got to chapter 2 when he refers to " Ahaz the 'Scottish Conqueror'...". Wadda dope!

Good story, OK performance.
Revisado: 02-23-21
This is a good book. Sci-Fi fans should definitely enjoy this one. The narrator is OK. His voice is clear and the recording is loud enough. Unfortunately, he is not good enough at reading comprehension and often fails in giving the proper inflection. More often the mistake is in giving no inflection, but sometimes with incorrect inflection. (This is such a common failing among Audible narrators, that I will probably soon give up on complaining about it.) There are so few good readers on Audible. (George Guidall is about the best I have encountered).
Sometimes I consider applying for a job reading books for Audible; at least I would know what I'm doing.

Historia
Labeled variously a realistic story of whaling, a romance of unusual adventure and eccentric characters, a symbolic allegory, and a drama of heroic conflict, Moby Dick is first and foremost a great story. It has both the humor and poignancy of a simple sea ballad, as well as the depth and universality of a grand odyssey.

Great book! Audible is good too. Sound is clear, narration pretty good. I think there are a few mistaken voice inflections and misreadings, but not many and I can't remember any examples off the top of my head. (Sometimes narrators misunderstand words that are used in an archaic sense, pronouncing or inflecting them in a manner that may be technically correct, but doesn't match the usage.) There are a few of these mistakes in Ishmael's monologues, but not enough to be very distracting.

Historia
The Iliad is one of the most enduring creations of Western Civilization and was originally written to be recited or chanted to the accompaniment of various instruments. Properly performed, this work today is just as meaningful, just as powerful, and just as entertaining as it was in the ninth century BC, and it casts its spell upon modern listeners with the same raw intensity as it did upon the people of ancient times.

Historia
Born to an unmarried woman who dies after giving birth, orphan Oliver Twist seems destined to slog through a dismal life in the workhouse. A rebellious cry for more gets Oliver banished, and ultimately lands him on the dismal streets of London. The young outcast finds refuge with Fagin and his band of thieves before fate intervenes and puts Oliver in the hands of a kindly benefactor. It is likely that Dickens's own early youth as a child labourer contributed to the story's development.

NOT Unabridged
Revisado: 10-13-17
Great book, probably my favorite of Dickens'. There are so many funny asides and little facetious descriptions throughout.
Unfortunately, there are sections skipped in this audio version. I think it is an error, not an editorial decision, because the two omissions I noticed were Oliver's journey to London and Sikes' death. Both important to the story.
Still an enjoyable listen, but slightly disappointing.

Historia
With well over 200 million copies sold, this novel ranks among the most famous works in the history of fictional literature. It depicts the plight of the French peasantry demoralized by the French aristocracy in the years leading up to the revolution, the corresponding brutality demonstrated by the revolutionaries toward the former aristocrats in the early years of the revolution, and many unflattering social parallels with life in London during the same time period.

Good book, bad narrator.
Revisado: 09-07-17
No offense to the narrator, he actually did an unusually good job of using correct voice inflection. I didn't notice any mispronounced or misread words, which is fairly unusual for an Audible narrator.
Unfortunately the tone of his voice is low and somewhat husky. Combined with a low recorded volume, the audio is barely intelligible over any background noise, such as road noise. It required constantly straining to hear, which detracted from my enjoyment.
