Slow plot and Horrible sound editing
Revisado: 01-12-24
Yet another review saying, "I should have read the reviews first." Seriously, there was enough material for one or two episodes of Rebels, hour tops, but it Dragged out. I lost interest, after the third character that was explored and motivations and loves were all tended and the they were killed off screen. no Dramatic reveal, not impending doom, just hen they are dead, moving on.
There was a lot of Science stuff that was so wrong that it bothered me as well. I know "its a book about space wizards" but If something is moving at near light speed, headed at you and you see it a month out, You don't have a month to prepare. It is moving at you at nearly the same speed that the information came to you. Also you are not on a planet around an R type star, OGAFGKM are the star types that you have any chance of seeing much less living around. I can forgive plot devices like Light speed travel and Hyperspace, light swords with limited length and so much more but seriously a google search would have solved so much.
Lastly, but for me the worst. Sound levels, sound effects and distortion. The low quiet noises of a space ship in the background might add something to the story, but going from a person whispering to an explosion at full volume is painful and very distracting. There is a point where the bad guys are talking and they are apparently speaking Distortion, because so much voice modulation and background effects are applied that I could not understand any dialogue for most of a scene. It then cleared up enough so that I could tell that the Marc Thompson was doing a thick Rocky Balboa accent that they then applied a voice distortion filter to and added electrical and bad background music.
I hate not finishing books, but I am done with this one. If there are more like this one I may be done with the series.

A fairly realistic survivalist tale without the usual overly militaristic or complete dystopian tone.

Narration is Important... to reading a... book
Revisado: 04-06-22
The information and approach is interesting and I really wanted to listen to this. I am fascinated by the topic. The narrator's style of reading in 5 to 6 word blocks regardless of how humans talk was so distracting I had to stop listening. Long random pauses in the middle of sentences for no apparent reason. AAAAAAAHHH
I may come back and reread it later or try the paper book.

Not really my Genre, I guess
Revisado: 01-19-22
I was exploring new genres and thought I would try this style of mystery. It is well written, the character descriptions are done well, the locations are described correctly (I grew up in the area it describes at about the time it is set) So I understand why there are 26 of these stories.
It is So dated and the repeated mentions of the pointless details were distracting. There was a distinct feeling that the author was trying to describe everything in a Noir style but it is set in the 80s. That was distracting. I kept being pulled out of the story and I would have to work my way back into the story.
Just really not my genre, which is a shame because they are well written and there are a lot of them to read.
If it is your style Enjoy.

Starts Brilliantly then...
Revisado: 08-27-19
I love Stephenson's writing, I have read most of what he has written and am always in awe of his writing style. So I have to conclude that this form of narration was deliberate and not just badly in need of an editor.
The story starts with interesting characters and a great premise, the integration of the human intellect and machine intelligence into a cohesive whole and what effect that will have on society over time. The world is well built and cleverly created. Then We enter almost exclusively the digital world, and the writing becomes stilted and awkward, tedious and drawn out would be kind. Boring and dry would be more accurate. The interesting characters have amazing power and do nothing interesting with it.
I think I finally figured out why it was written differently when viewing the new digital world. It is written like that most page turning and fascinating of texts, religious texts. The tone is long winded, dry repetitive, straining at nothing. It fits well with the narrative, but it is really Dry.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.
