This is the BEST Great Course EVER! Robert Garland is simply incredible! I have never been so enthralled, and this course made my zillion books on the Greeks and Romans much more appealing to me. Adrian Goldsworthy, Donald Kagan, Victor Davis Hansen, Paul Cartledge, Richard Miles, Edward Gibbon and other great historians can't be read as deserved without an integrated understanding of Greek and Roman history--Dr. Garland gave me such knowledge in spades. I loved this course so much that I had every intention of flying to Colgate to tell Dr. Garland thank you in person, only to find he retired in 2020. Bravo, Dr. Garlannd, you are a good man and a magical teacher; you have taught me so much, and I can't wait to dive into Thucydides, Homer and Virgil because of you, you, you. My only regret is your course had to end. I find great peace imagining you retiring to Greece and laughing in the sun. Thank you.

Adrian Goldsworthy is a splendid historian in that he sacrifices neither fact nor entertainment. He includes what is essential and he identifies for his readers where evidence is lacking. Derek Perkins must love to read Goldsworthy, and I can’t say how much I love his lack of unnecessary or excessive drama. Bravo!!!

Not only is this the best biography of Churchill, but it is also the best biography of which I can dream. I didn't think it was possible to surpass the skill and magic that Andrew Roberts displayed in his masterpiece, Napoleon: A Life; I was wrong. This book showed me how much art and honesty lie at the heart of a monumental biography. This work is a once in a lifetime read. I simultaneously listened to it as narrated by Stephen Thorne. Mr. Thorne added a layer of magic to Mr. Robert's efforts and genius. I loved this book as both read and heard. Bravo to Mr. Roberts and Mr. Thorne. Roar.

I listened to Benedict Cumberbatch narrate these Holmes tales over a long flight from the States. I was simply awed by his ability to convey every aspect of Holmes' personality. Upon arriving in London, I joined several friends for dinner. We played a game where we were asked the question, "If you could meet any living personality for dinner to discuss anything and everything, whom would you choose?" By reflex, I almost went to my stock answer, the historian Andrew Roberts, but without too much of a pause, I substituted Benedict Cumberbatch. Everyone at my table copycatted me -- laughing -- but it was just praise. His command of English and its wonderous subtleties made us celebrate his peerless magic.

OMG, this wondrous story drove me to my knees. I’m so awed by Philip Pullman's skill. One may grasp the whole body of non-fiction and know nothing if you don’t understand human consciousness and all the magic in between.

I didn’t think it was possible to exceed my expectations after His Dark Materials. Pullman defines good and evil by contrasting them against the intrinsic motivations of Mankind—leaving the reader with a notion of all the gentle peace that prevails in the ether—yet always imperiled. We don’t ask ourselves if we are truly conscious going through the motions of daily life; do we?
