Historia
Behind the scenes of movies like The Ten Commandments, The Prince of Egypt, or Exodus: Gods and Kings is a complicated, and at times, messy biblical story. In this short guide to the book of Exodus, Biblical scholar Peter Enns doesn't just break down the story for the average person to understand but takes us behind the story - to the history and traditions that led us to the story as we have it today. By asking the important questions, and taking us along Moses's and the Israelite journey, Enns brings the best in biblical scholarship to us everyday people.

Excellent exposition of Exodus
Revisado: 02-19-24
Enns does it again, providing serious Christians with a realistic explanation of what the authors and editors of Exodus were really getting at while navigating between the Scylla of biblical fundamentalist literalism and the Charybdis of atheistic fundamentalist criticism, both of which treat the authors and editors and/or readers of a great work as ignorant and obtuse.

Historia
In Armageddon, acclaimed New Testament authority Bart D. Ehrman delves into the most misunderstood—and possibly the most dangerous—book of the Bible, exploring the horrifying social and political consequences of expecting an imminent apocalypse and offering a fascinating tour through three millennia of Judeo-Christian thinking about how our world will end. By turns hilarious, moving, troubling, and provocative, Armageddon presents inspiring insights into how to live our lives in the face of an uncertain future.

An insightful analysis of Revelation
Revisado: 04-02-23
I was reared as an evangelical, but am now attend a mainline church. My switch came from reading the Bible frequently and thoroughly. One thing that doing so did was to make me realize that the end times teachings I grew up with were not consistent with what I was reading. In this book, Dr. Ehrman has done the best job of exposing those problems and the inconsistencies of the Jesus of Revelation with the Jesus of the Gospels that I have ever read. Kudos!

Revisado: 11-12-21
As a Missouri native and baseball fan, I knew something of the history of the St. Louis Browns and Veeck’s history as the brief owner. And I recall the disco demolition night. But I had no idea how important and innovative he was. Not to mention he was a real life Forrest Gump in intersecting with so many important people of the 20th century.

Historia
Millions are getting lost in the evangelical maze: inerrancy, indifference to the environment, deterministic Calvinism, purity culture, racism, LGBTQ discrimination, male dominance, and Christian nationalism. They are now conscientious objectors, deconstructionists, perhaps even "none and done". As one of America's leading academics speaking to the issues of religion today, David Gushee offers a clear assessment and a new way forward for disillusioned post-evangelicals.

For Former Evangelicals who are still Christian
Revisado: 09-07-21
While the book acknowledges that some leaving Evangelicalism will leave faith, or at least the Christian faith, altogether, I believe this book is of most value to us who truly believe in Jesus Christ and the Holy Trinity, but believe that Evangelicalism as practiced in the United States in the first two decades of the 21st century is a hindrance rather than an aid in finding and worshiping the God of the Old and New Testaments. Having grown up in an Evangelical household and having worshiped as an Evangelical for six decades, I have watched with sadness and horror as the welcoming, optimistic Evangelicalism of my youth has transmogrified into an exclusivity, pessimistic mess. As a child, my mother was the adult Sunday school teacher for both sexes 30 and older in our church. I believe that another woman served that role before she did, though that was before my memory. In the Evangelicalism I left, such a leadership role for women had been denied for at least two decades. Dr. Gushee has witnessed similar problems, though he traces them back to a time before I was even born, and he offers insights for those of us who have had enough, but still believe in the God who we used to find in Evangelicalism.

Traumatized by the bombing of Dresden at the time he had been imprisoned, Pilgrim drifts through all events and history, sometimes deeply implicated, sometimes a witness. He is surrounded by Vonnegut's usual large cast of continuing characters (notably here the hack science fiction writer Kilgore Trout and the alien Tralfamadorians, who oversee his life and remind him constantly that there is no causation, no order, no motive to existence).

Historia
Biblical womanhood - the belief that God designed women to be submissive wives, virtuous mothers, and joyful homemakers - pervades North American Christianity. From choices about careers to roles in local churches to relationship dynamics, this belief shapes the everyday lives of evangelical women. Yet biblical womanhood isn't biblical, says Baylor University historian Beth Allison Barr. It was born in a series of clearly definable historical moments.

A very important book
Revisado: 08-20-21
My mother taught a mixed-sex adult Sunday school class in a white Evangelical church during my childhood in the 1960s and 1970s. By the early 2000s, my family was attending an Southern Baptist church where that would have been forbidden and it has remained that way in the churches we have attended since. No more for our family. Dr. Barr explains why this development is not only ahistorical but a serious theological error that even embraces the Arian heresy to justify itself and leads to sexual harassment and abuse in the Church. A must read.

Historia
How did a libertine who lacks even the most basic knowledge of the Christian faith win 81 percent of the white evangelical vote in 2016? And why have white evangelicals become a presidential reprobate's staunchest supporters? Jesus and John Wayne is a sweeping account of the last 75 years of white evangelicalism, showing how American evangelicals have worked for decades to replace the Jesus of the Gospels with an idol of rugged masculinity and Christian nationalism.

This explains so much about how white Evangelicalism came to abandon the kind of Christianity I knew growing up, when my mother taught an adult Sunday school class including both men and women and people of different political beliefs worshiped together.

My Favorite Audio version of the New Testament
Revisado: 03-27-19
The narration is superb and I love listening to the KJV. My only criticism is that as a compilation, it would be better if each book were a separate "book", so that one doesn't have to figure out what chapter to navigate to to get the a specified book.and chapter number as traditionally designated for the New Testament. The Audible breakdown works okay if one listens to the books of the New Testament in canonical order, but not as well if one wishes to listen to them in some other order.

Historia
Large numbers of atheists, humanists, and conspiracy theorists are raising one of the most pressing questions in the history of religion: "Did Jesus exist at all?" Was he invented out of whole cloth for nefarious purposes by those seeking to control the masses? Or was Jesus such a shadowy figure - far removed from any credible historical evidence - that he bears no meaningful resemblance to the person described in the Bible?

Would you consider the audio edition of Did Jesus Exist? to be better than the print version?
I have not read the print version.
Any additional comments?
The narration was excellent. I was very much impressed with Professor Ehrman's arguments. I did not agree with his arguments against the divinity of Jesus, but I found his arguments in support of Jesus' historicity to be compelling. Anyone doubting the historicity of Jesus should read or listen to this book.
