Incredible

It was extremely comprehensive, informative, interesting, and just a stellar work of literature. It is quite shocking to realize how much politics is involved in scientific discovery and consensus

Historia
Whether he was composing love letters, speeches, or legal arguments, words mattered to Abraham Lincoln. An admirer and avid reader of Byron, Burns, and Shakespeare, Lincoln was the most literary of our presidents. His views on love, liberty and human nature were all shaped by his reading and knowledge of literature. Kaplan explores Lincoln's life through his use of language as a vehicle for complex ideas and feelings and as an instrument of persuasion and empowerment.

Some needed perspective
Revisado: 03-11-19
While not exhaustive or comprehensive, Mr Kaplan's perspective in analyzing the great man from a literary perspective brings body and detail to many aspects of Lincoln's life. I thoroughly enjoyed this addition to the Lincoln corpus.

Historia
Lincoln, who in afterlife became mythologized as the Great Emancipator, was shaped by the values of the White America into which he was born. While he viewed slavery as a moral crime abhorrent to American principles, he disapproved of antislavery activists. Until the last year of his life, he advocated "voluntary deportation", concerned that free Blacks in a White society would result in centuries of conflict.

An able exploration
Revisado: 02-24-19
If you’ve never explored Lincoln from an abolitionist viewpoint you must read Fred Kaplan's treatment. I found he explored the political terrain leading up to the Civil War in a very even handed manner revealing the motivating engine relentlessly driving the nation on to inevitable war. A very even handed treatment of Lincoln, neither vilifying or defying but rather honoring our president by seeing him as he was. We must see history in this way to understand that we too are blinded captives to our own times, and in seeing this to attain a closer approximation to truth and justice. I have never read a Lincoln book that did a better job of drawing me into the thoughts and motivations of the participants on the stage of pre civil war history. Take the time to read this book. You will understand your own times in a new light.

Historia
In this important new biography, Ronald C. White, Jr. offers a fresh and fascinating definition of Lincoln as a man of integrity - what today's commentators are calling "authenticity" - whose internal moral compass is the key to understanding his life. Through meticulous research, utilizing recently discovered Lincoln letters, legal papers, and photographs, White depicts Lincoln as a person of intellectual curiosity, comfortable with ambiguity, and capable of changing his mind.

Historia
This is an excellent look at the religious system of the Catholic Church from the inside. Charles Chiniquy studied at the college of Nicolet in Canada; after graduation he entered the priesthood (at an early age) and continued therein until he was an old man. At the age of 49 he left the Roman church, taking his congregation with him, and became a Presbyterian minister. His encounters with the inner workings of the of the Roman church are enlightening and could come only from someone who was embedded in such a system for so many years.

Gripping read
Revisado: 08-04-18
This book far exceeded my expectations, and was full of surprises in every chapter. The story telling rivals Dickens and Dumas, and the fact that it is autobiographical makes it even more thrilling. Every Christian should read this book and I believe even non Christians will find its contents a compelling account of an amazing life, filled with countless adventures, triumphs, and betrayals. The narration by Dan Kassis is flawless with perfect accents and emotional portrayal. I have read many books in my sixty years of life but I must confess this is one of the best reads I have ever experienced. I feel that it has breathed new life into my soul. Relish it and be transformed.

Americans have come to tolerate, embrace, and even champion many things that would have horrified their parents' generation - from easy divorce and unrestricted abortion on demand to extreme body piercing and teaching homosexuality to grade schoolers. Does that mean today's Americans are inherently more morally confused and depraved than previous generations? Of course not, says veteran journalist David Kupelian.

Historia
It is the greatest work of English prose ever written, and it is no coincidence that the translation was made at the moment “Englishness” and the English language had come into its first passionate maturity. Boisterous, elegant, subtle, majestic, finely nuanced, sonorous, and musical, the English of Jacobean England has a more encompassing idea of its own reach and scope than any before or since. It is a form of the language that drips with potency and sensitivity. The age, with all its conflicts, explains the book.

Historia
In this witty, often terrifying work of cultural criticism, Postman chronicles our transformation into a Technopoly: a society that no longer merely uses technology as a support system but instead is shaped by it. According to Postman, technology is rapidly gaining sovereignty over social institutions and national life to become self-justifying, self-perpetuating, and omnipresent. He warns that this will have radical consequences for the meanings of politics, art, religion, family, education, and more.

Neil Postman does that which is so incredibly difficult to do. He steps back and analyzes our culture from the outside. This is must reading for anyone interested in delving into the root of our educational and societal malaise. At the same time it is a fascinating and enjoyable read/listen.
