Didn’t realize that this is YA
Revisado: 10-27-24
I didn’t realize this was a YA novel. I think it would have helped knowing that going into it. The narrator is great, but there is a whole high school cafeteria clique vibe that I wasn’t prepared for. I can appreciate a lot of things about the story, but it just wasn’t for me. I couldn’t finish it.

Of all the things that could have landed in her yard, it had to be him. For most people, finding a half-naked superbeing in their yard might be a dream come true. Unfortunately for Gracie Castro, it’s the exact opposite. Especially when he’s grouchy, rude, and shows no signs of leaving anytime soon. But when a hero of mankind needs you, you do what you have to. Even if it compromises everything you know. And totally changes your life.

I liked the idea for this book. Unfortunately, any time the plot started to become exciting, it was ruined by the inane internal monologue of the main character. Wish it were better.

Don’t read if you have any knowledge of functional neuroanatomy or how memory actually works. Just couldn’t suspend my belief. I like the author’s narration though.

Historia
Meet Jack Price and the Seven Demons: Doc, the evil mad scientist presently using Jack for sex; Rex, an explosives expert who doesn’t ask too many questions so long as something goes boom; Volodya, a Ukrainian assassin who may or may not be a cannibal; Charlie, a comic book artist with computer skills and an anarchist bent; Lucille, whose specialty is razor-edged hugs; and Jack’s predecessor, Fred, who doesn’t contribute a whole lot owing to being a severed head on a stick. Finally there’s Jack himself, former coffee magnate turned cocaine dealer turned First Demon.

Complex narrative. Lots of tongue in cheek. I started this twice but couldn't get into it right away. I'm so glad a tried again because I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Not as bad as I expected based on reviews
Revisado: 02-19-22
While I wasn’t a big fan of the story, I didn’t hate the ending like I thought I would based on the reviews; maybe that’s because I had pretty low expectations after reading others’ reactions to it. I was ready to throw in the towel on this series even before listening to this book, but now I’m planning to get the next one. I’m curious about where the story goes from here.

Modern horror novel indeed!
Revisado: 09-29-21
Best book I've read in a while. I am easily bored with slow pacing, but this book was engaging the whole way through. Loved the way modern technology was seamlessly blended into the occult horror setting. Also, Luke Smitherd does a lovely job with the narration.

Historia
Clare remembers the cold. She remembers abandoned cars and children’s toys littered across the road. She remembers dark shapes in the snow and a terror she can’t explain. And then...nothing. When she wakes, aching and afraid in a stranger’s gothic home, he tells her she was in an accident. He claims he saved her. Clare wants to leave, but a vicious snowstorm has blanketed the world in white, trapping them together, and there’s nothing she can do but wait. At least the stranger seems kind...but Clare doesn’t know if she can trust him.

Rescue, rinse, repeat
Revisado: 07-03-20
The plot was intriguing at first. I liked the suspense of being in the dark about what was happening. That is, until I realized exactly what was happening: helpless main character needs saving by strong man...over and over and over. How many times did he pick her up and literally carry her somewhere! Maybe if the plot had more going on the repeated rescuing would've been less noticeable, but it got pretty stagnant and I lost interest. Could've been so much better.

I had hoped for more, but alright nonetheless
Revisado: 05-31-20
I imagine it's very hard to write a book where the character arc is already known from the Hunger Games series, but the events didn't seem integrated enough to warrant the sudden shifts in attitude. Granted the character is a teen/ young adult who is figuring out his identity and whatnot. Also I'm an adult so my expectations may be unrealistic (I threw in an extra star for that reason). Nonetheless, I had hoped for something a little more interesting. The plot peaked a little early. Still worth a read for fans of the series (even adult fans).

Wally Roux is a teenage genius with a big imagination and a big heart, who just moved to Savannah, GA, from Maine with his mom, who adopted him when he was an infant. In this charming and sweet solo performance, Wally investigates what is causing a number of strange events and occurrences. He explores and gets lost within space-time - an infinite, indefinable, and mysterious void that you can’t see but when you slice into it you can feel it.

Who is this written for!!
Revisado: 09-03-19
I have no idea who the author intended this story for. Based on reviews suggesting foul language, I assumed the story was meant for adults. After reading it, however, it seems like a YA novel (think tweens) with a hefty dose of cuss words that are haphazardly sprinkled in with no real rhyme or reason. As an adult reader, I was bored and underwhelmed.
